    Obituary:
Reuben Joseph Schaefer, formerly of Hilbert, age 96, went peacefully to his eternal rest on Friday September 6, 2013 at Maple Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shawano. He was born on the homestead farm in rural Hilbert on August 23, 1917, the youngest of 4 sons born to the late Charles and Anna (Sommers) Schaefer. Reuben graduated from Brillion High School in 1935. He engaged in farming on the homestead property and lived there almost all of his life until his stroke in the summer of 2007. In addition to farming, Reuben also worked for the town of Brillion, Brillion Iron Works, White Clover Dairy in the Town of Holland, Wispride Cheese in Hilbert, and Ariens Company in Brillion, from which he retired in 1982. Reuben married Erna Elsie Reinke on November 23, 1943. Except for one short year, they lived on the family farm, wanting their children to be brought up in the country. In his later years, Reuben enjoyed gardening, playing cards, attending church functions and spending time with family, friends, and his faithful dog, Duke. He was a long-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hilbert and enjoyed membership in the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Knights, Mens Club and Eagles Club. He will be remembered for his quick wit and ready comeback for almost any situation. He also became quite accomplished in the kitchen, sending family members home with homemade cookies and pies (especially apple), as well as produce from his garden, which for many years, was his pride and joy.
Reuben is survived by his daughters: Judith (Wayne) Dunbar, Green Bay; Marjorie (Gene) Goldschmidt, Appleton; Joyce (Richard) Holtz, Little Chute; Carol (Harvey) Boeder, Green Bay; and Doris Jean (Charles) Strohfeldt, Whitelaw; grandchildren: Craig and Reed Dunbar, Collin (Melissa) and Cory (Karissa) Goldschmidt, Rick (Clysta) and Jason (Carissa) Holtz, Edward (Christina) and Aaron Boeder, Shannon and Eric (Jennifer) Strohfeldt; great grandsons: Graham Goldschmidt, Lars, Olin and Vaughn Holtz and Emerson Boeder; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mabel (Lester) Oakley, Jeannette (Donald) Stellbrink, Mary Reinke and Gwen Reinke. He is further survived by other relatives, friends, and the family of special friend, the late Evelyn Nehring.
In addition to his parents, Reuben was preceded in death by his wife Erna and their daughter Doris Joan. His death also marks the end of his immediate generation with his brothers and sisters-in-law, Walter (Grace), Sylverius (Hilaria) and William (Nel) Schaefer, all waiting to welcome him into heaven. Members of Erna's family also preceded him in death: Martha Riemer, Ruth Henehan Vrankovic, Dorothy (Roland) Schmeiser, Edward (Joan), Darold (Marcella), Clifford (Jean), Roy, Esther, Stella, Harry Oscar, Leo and William Reinke Jr.; and special friend Evelyn Nehring.
Visitation will be held Tuesday September 10, 2013 at ST. MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS CATHOLIC CHURCH (108 S. 6th St. Hilbert) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Michael Betley will officiate. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. To sign the guest book, please visit oconnellfh.com.
The family wishes a very special thank you to the staff in the Maple View unit at Maple Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shawano, Parkside Care Center in Little Chute and Theda Care at Home Hospice for the many acts of kindness extended to dad during his long illness.
Dad, you always said you were blessed with all daughters, and when we all married, you were fortunate to get your sons, too. We all love you and will miss you. Peace, Dad.

Donald Peter Paul Sommers, age 81, of Brillion, died unexpectedly on Monday May 7, 2012 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. He was born on June 26, 1930, son of the late Michael & Bernadine (Brochtrup) Sommers. He graduated from Brillion High School in 1948. On June 9, 1951 he married Lila Elenor Krueger in Hollandtown. They were blessed to celebrate with family and friends last year their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Don had a long career in sales, starting out at Kloehn Electric with appliances, then cars. His next move was into insurance sales, where he was a State Farm Insurance agent for over 29 years. After that, he sold advertising for WMBE and WRJO radio stations. Don was a member of the Brillion Volunteer Fire Department from 1954 through 1964. He was also a member of the Brillion Jaycees, a Charter Lifetime member and past president of the Brillion Optimist Club, and was an active member of the Brillion Athletic Association for many years. He served on the Brillion City Council from 1964 through 1974. During his term, he was proud to be a part of the group that established the Brillion Community Center with a basketball court. Don also served as a Calumet County Board Supervisor from 1974 through 1986. After a two year break, he served again as a Supervisor for the county from 1988 through April of 2012. With his love for basketball, he was the volunteer basketball coach for St. Mary's School from 1962 through 1979. He coached both teams which included grades 5 through 8. He also had the help of good friend, Merrill Vanderhoof, for several years coaching the St. Mary's Raider teams. He enjoyed spending time with his three children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Don was a big sports fan and loved to play basketball. He played many years on the Brillion City team and Hilbert's team. He also loved to play tennis. You could even find him on the court when he was 79 years young, swinging a racket with his children and grandchildren. Matches even involved his nephew and Godson Mike. There might have been a few occasional questionable line calls from Don, mixed in the many matches through the years! Even though he couldn't swim, he enjoyed the water and boating. Don and Lila enjoyed visiting cottages of relatives and had a cottage of their own on Long Lake. He loyally followed the Brillion sports teams, along with being an avid Green Bay Packer fan and Ice Bowl survivor. Survivors include his wife Lila, his children, Cindy (Gene) Sievert of Reedsville, Don Mike Sommers of Oshkosh, Dave (Laurie) Sommers of Brillion, his grandchildren Dana (Chris) Hoyer and their children Ethan and Sevanna of Brillion, Briana (Nick) Abel of Brillion, Samantha Sommers, Alyssa Sommers, and Amanda Sommers all of Brillion, 2 sisters Ann (Frank) Petrie of Fremont CA, Gerry (Roger) Weber of Hilbert, 2 sisters-in-law Phyllis (Harlan) Krahn of Brillion, Dorothy (Otto) Rusch of Washburn WI, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
