    DEATH CLAIMS DR. D. S. RICE AT AGE OF 73 Veteran Stevens Point Physician Passes Away at The Family Home
    Dr. Daniel S. Rice, 73, a well-known practicing physician and surgeon in S tevens Point for many years and organizer of Council No. 3170, Knigh ts of Columbus, died Wednesday night at 8:15 o'clock at his home at 704 Ma in street. He suffered a stroke of paralysis in November 1932, at which t ime he retired from practice, and had been in ill health since. Dr. Ri ce had another stroke last March 8 and was confined in bed most of the ti me until his death.
    Native of Brown CountyBorn on June 4, 1863, at Morrison, Brown County, Dr. Rice was a son of t he late John and Mary Rice, pioneer residents of Brown County, who locat ed there in 1855. He received his early education in the public schoo ls of that county and attended St. Francis' Seminary near Milwaukee. D r. Rice then entered college at Valparaiso, Indiana, and upon completi on of his education taught school in Brown county for a time, later bei ng elected county superintendent of schools of Brown county. After servi ng the county in this capacity for six years he entered the College of Phy sicians and Surgeons at Chicago, from which he was graduated on April 2 0, 1897.
    Began Practice at CusterFollowing his graduation he came to Portage county and began his practi ce of medicine at Custer. After serving that community for two year s, he established an office in Stevens Point in 1899 and practiced here co ntinuously until his retirement five years ago. His marriage to Miss Eliz abeth Heffron of Stevens Point, took place on May 23, 1900.Prior to his retirement, Dr. Rice was a member of the hospital staff of S t. Michael's Hospital. He was also a member of the Portage County Medic al society and the Wisconsin State Medical society. As organizer of the l ocal Knights of Columbus court 28 years ago he was a charter member and se rved as its first grand knight. In honor of Dr. Rice a class of candidat es was initiated into the council a year ago and was named the D. S. Ri ce class. Since coming to Stevens Point almost 40 years ago, Dr. Rice w as an active member of St. Stephen's church and a devout member of its Ho ly Name society. He also was a member of St. Stephen's court of Forester s, No. 258.
    Those Who SurviveSurviving are his wife; two sons, Dr. Rhode Rice, a practicing Stevens Poi nt physician, and Dr. Maurice Rice, a member of the hospital staff of Wisc onsin General hospital at Madison; four daughters, Mrs. Richard Jones, 2 06 Prais street, Miss Madeline Rice, a member of the Stevens Point High sc hool faculty, Miss Betty Rice, employed at the Portage county pension dep artment in Stevens Point, and Miss Ruth Rice, a student technician at Wisc onsin General hospital; four brothers, Rev. William J. Rice, a former past or of St. Stephen's church from 1893 to 1920 and now chaplain at Mercy hos pital at Oshkosh, Dr. E. M. Rice of Milwaukee, and Matt and John Rice of G reenleaf, Wisconsin; a sister, Miss Molly Rice of Greenleaf and four grand children.
    Funeral SaturdayFuneral services will be held Saturday morning with a solemn high mass cel ebrated at St. Stephen's church. Burial will follow in St. Stephen's ceme tery. The body is at the Crosby funeral home where it will remain until t he time of the funeral.

    R. R. W. RICE STRICKEN, DIES AT MADISON - Taken by Death While in Hospital For a Checkup
    Stevens Point mourns the sudden death today of one of its prominent surgeo ns and physicians, Dr. Rhody W. Rice, age 45. His death occurred at 1 a. m. at Wisconsin General Hospital, Madison, following a heart attack.
    Dr. Rice had gone to Madison Saturday to attend a meeting of the house of delegates of the State Medical Society of Wisconsin, of which he was a member. He entered the hospital Tuesday noon for a physical check up and was stricken in the evening.
    The Rice home is at 638 Clark street.
    Marquette Graduate
    Dr. Rice received his doctor's degree from the Marquette University school of medicine in 1926 and after serving his internship at St. Mary's hospital, Milwaukee, he practiced for a year in Milwaukee, where he was associ ated with Dr. Andrew Weber. He began practice in Stevens Point in 1928 wi th his father, the late Dr. Daniel S. Rice, who died in 1937. He was asso ciated with his brother, Dr. Maurice Rice, from 1933 to 1935, when Dr. Ri ce went to Philadelphia and later to Madison, returning to Stevens Poi nt in July, 1938. Dr. Maurice Rice served in the navy from 1942 to Januar y, 1946, then resumed his practice here. The brothers have maintained off ices at 401 1/2 Main street. Dr. Robert Slater has been associated with t hem since 1942.

    Dr. Rhody Rice had taken postgraduate work in cardiology at the Universi ty of Minnesota at two different times. He was a member of the Portage Co unty Medical society and State Medical society. He was also a member of t he staff of St. MIchael's hospital since locating here and formerly serv ed as its secretary and treasurer and on its executive committee.

    In 1937, Dr. Rice was made a fellow of the American College of Surgeo ns in session in Chicago at the time.
    Dr. Rice was born in Stevens Point on March 15, 1901. His mother, Mrs. Da iel S. Rice, resides at 340 Pine street. He attended St. Stephen's paroch ial school, was graduated from the Stevens Point High School in 1919 and a ttended Central State Teachers college, before entering Marquette. His ma rriage to MIss Beatrice Anderson of Chicago took place on May 30, 1928.

    Surviving besides the widow and his mother, are three children, Peter, a ge 14, Mary, 12, and MIchael, 10, the brother, Dr. Maurice Rice of Plov er HIlls, and four sisters, Mrs. R. L. Jones and Mrs. Robert Bablitch of S tevens Point, Mrs. Stuart Owwns of Chicago and Mrs. Clark Gapen of Riversi de, Ill.
    Dr. Rice was a member of St. John's court No. 1807, Men's Catholic Ord er of Foresters, Council No. 1170, Knights of Clumbus, the Holy Name socie ty of St. Stephen's church and the Kiwanis club.
    Services Saturday
    Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Stephe n's church with burial following in the parish cemetery.
    Friends may call at the Crosby funeral home after Thursday noon. Gener al rosary will be said Friday evening at 8 o'clcock. Members of the Knigh ts of Columbus council also will meet Friday evening at 8 o'clock to say t he rosary. St. John's court of Foresters and St. Stephen's court No. 25 8, Men's Catholic Order of Foresters will say the rosary at 7:30 o'clock F riday evening.

    Evelyn Marie Jones; Evelyn Marie Jones, 86, 2315 Prais St., died Tuesay morning, at St. Michae l's Hospital.
    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus Cat holic Church. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Boston Funer al Home. The Rev. Donald Przybylski and the Rev. Patrick Norris, O.P., Bl essed Sacrement Catholic Church, Madison, will co-officiate. A prayer ser vice will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
    A memorial has been established in her name for the Hospice of Portage Cou nty and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Scholarship Fund.
    She was born March 31, 1904, in Stevens Point, daughter of the late Dr. Da niel and Elizabeth Rice. She graduated from Emerson HIgh School and th en from Stevens Point Normal School. She later attended Northwestern Univ ersity.
    Mrs. Jones taught in the Stevens Point school system for several years bef ore teaching piano at the Stevens Point Conservatory of Music.
    She was married to Richard L. Jones on Aug. 18, 1934, in Stevens Poin t. He died Sept. 22.
    Mrs. Jones was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, a charter memb er of the Twilight Music Club and a member of the Stevens Point Dance Clu b. She was also a member of Tau Gamma Beta sorority.
    Survivors include one son, Stephen C. (Peg), Green Bay; two daughters, Sus an E. (Louis) Molepske, Stevens Point, and Madeline A. (William) Drew, Mad ison; one brother, Dr. Maurice Rice, Stevens Point; two sisters, Ruth (Rob ert) Bablitch, Stevens Point, and Elizabeth (Gapen), Riverside, Ill.; a nd 10 grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

    Madeline Owens, 73, Wisconsin Rapids, died Saturday at University Hospital s, Madison, of complications following heart surgery Tuesday.
    She was born Sept. 24, 1911, in Stevens Point, daughter of the late Dani el and Elizabeth Rice. She was married to Stuart Owens Feb. 20, 194 3, in Stevens Point. He died Nov. 5, 1966.
    She was a librarian for the then T.B. Scott Library, Wisconsin Rapids, fr om 1961-70. She was a social studies teacher at St. Vincent de Paul Eleme ntary School, Wisconsin Rapids, from 1970-77.
    Mrs. Owens was a 1934 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. S he was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Wisconsin Rapid s, and its women's club.
    Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Ellen Clement, Port Edwards, and Ma ry Jane Birkley, Madison; three sons, John, Englewood, Colo., James, Savo y, Ill., and Jerald, Neenah; nine grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Jon es and Ruth Bablitch, both of Stevens Point, and Elizabeth Gapen, Riversid e, Ill.; and one brother, Dr. Maurice Rice, Stevens Point.
    She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother.
    Services will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Chu rch, WIsconsin Rapids, with the Rev. Andrew Karoblis and the Rev. Carl Doc kendorff officiating. Friends may call at the Taylor Funeral Home fr om 4 to 9 p.m. today and until time of services Tuesday. A general rosa ry will be said at 8 o'clock tonight.

    Mrs. Bablitch was born March 11, 1916, in Stevens Point to the late Dr. Da niel and Elizabeth (Heffron) Rice. Her father was one of the early hor se and buggy doctors in central Wisconsin and later a founder of St. Micha el's Hospital. She graduated from Emerson High School in 1934. She did h er medical technical training at Madison General Hospital and was graduat ed from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1938 with a bachelor of sci ence degree.
    Sfhe was employed as a medical technician at Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and at Riv er Pines Sanitorium in Whiting until her marriage.
    She was married Oct. 5, 1940, at St. Stephen Parish to Robert A. Bablitc h. He survives.
    Her interests included family, golfing and gardening.
    Survivors include three sons, Jim (Judy), Stevens Point, Bob (Linda), La C rosse, and Mike (Jean), Stevens Point; three daughters, Liza (Joe) Stewar t, Lakewood, Ohio, Mary Beth (Bob) Katz, Lexington, Mass., Heidi (John) An derson, Madison; a sister, Betty (Rice) Gapen, Riverside, Ill.; and 10 gra ndchildren.
