    Find A Grave:
August was the son of Friedrich Johann Schmidt (1854-1938) and Sophia Johanna Elisabeth Kinow (1852-1938), and one of nine children. He was born in Willershagen, Blankenhagen, Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Prussia (Germany) and immigrated to the United States when he was seven years of age. His grandparents (Johann Joachim Christian Schmidt and Marie Dorothea Catherine Holst), his parents and a number of his siblings also immigrated to the United States (est 1850s-1885) and settled in the Fall Creek, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin area. August met Anna Katherine Weinstock when he worked as a farmhand on her family's farm in Brackett. They wed on 2 Oct 1901, their marriage being one of the first recorded in Eau Claire County. They were married at Holy Guardian Angels Church in Brackett by Father Killey. Witnesses were Anna Katherine Weinstock's brother John and August's sister Elisabeth. All were from the Eau Claire area. Once married, August was employed with Proctor Brothers of Eau Claire Elevator, and he and Katherine came to Stockbridge when he took over the management of the Stockbridge Harbor yard for them. Proctor Brothers sold the Stockbridge Harbor yard to the Cook & Brown Lime Co. of Oshkosh on October 21, 1910. August continued as manager. As the business expanded, so did the family of August and Katherine. They had nine children, six of whom survived: Frederick John, Walter Joseph, Elsie Stasia, Marie Ellen, Edward Michael and Anna Katherine. August Schmidt was manager of the Harbor Yard for 31 years. (His son Walter Joseph was a captain on tugs owned by the Cook & Brown Lime Co. for more than 20 years.)
    OBITUARY
Stockbridge.--After an illness of about one and one-half years, August Schmidt died at his home at the harbor Monday night. Mr. Schmidt was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, July 26, 1877, and came to America at seven years of age with his parents, who settled on a farm at Cleghorn where he grew to manhood. On Oct. 2, 1901, he was married to Katherine Weinstock. In 1903 he came with his family to take charge of the lumber yard and mill then operated by Proctor Bros., at Stockbridge Harbor. After four years Cook & Brown acquired the business, retaining Mr. Schmidt as manager, which position he held for more than 25 years. Last May Mr. Schmidt's health compelled him to retire from active work but continued to advise his son-in-law, John Ricker, who succeeded him. The funeral of Mr. Schmidt was held Wednesday at 9:30 from the home with services at St. Luke's Lutheran Church north of Brant with interment at the cemetery near Brant. Survivors are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Schmidt, aged 81 and 83, of Cleghorn; one brother, Albert; a sister, Mrs. Jacot, preceded her brother in death about a year ago. Three sons survive: Fred, Walter and Edward; three daughters, Mrs. John Ricker, Marie and Anna; and five grandchildren, all of Stockbridge. Pallbearers were Rufus Brown, Art Coffey, Geo. Hemauer, Oscar Schoen, Henry Bast, and Andrew Stevens.

Note: August is buried at St. Luke's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Brant; his spouse Katherine is buried at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery in Stockbridge.

Charlotte M. Diederich, age 72, of Stockbridge, passed peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2009, with her family by her side. She was born on October 20, 1936, in Stockbridge, daughter of the late John & Elsie (Schmidt) Ricker. She married William "Bill" Diederich on September 23, 1961. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1982. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge. Her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. Charlotte was a great cook & baker and had a sweet tooth second to none. She enjoyed puzzles, shopping, a good rummage sale, and most of all spending time with, and spoiling her grandchildren. In her later years, Charlotte enjoyed the peace on the farm and the companionship of the animals, Sky, Casey, Buck, Bud, Jack and the many farm cats.

Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. A memorial fund has been established in the name of Charlotte M. Diederich.
All the little things you have to say, keep reminding us of the day, that the end is drawing near, and we're holding back the tears. You brought us up with love and let us be when the time came you set us free, to make the choices on our own and live. You never asked for anything, yet you taught us to give. You've made your peace and said your goodbyes, we love you and we'll miss the smile in your eyes. You were everything we wanted to be and more, God loved you and will open his door. We love you Mom, and we'll never forget you. In the heart of our soul is where we will keep you. Take care, be happy, look down on us and smile. We'll be all right, it'll just take a while. You are our hero and if there is one thing you've taught us, it is to never give up. Love your six little angels.
