    Biography:
FRED SCHMEICHEL, who started life in humble circumstances and has won his way to the front rank of agriculturists of Outagamie county, is now the owner of 200 acres of well cultivated land in Cicero township. He was born in Sheboygan county, Wisconsin, March 18, 1855, and is a son of Jacob and Carolina (Kollaske) Schmeichel, natives of Austria who were born near the boundary line of Poland. They were married in their native country and came to the United States with their four children: Mary, Carrie, Mike and Julia, settling on a farm in Sheboygan county, and later moving to Manitowoc county. He never saw his father, as the latter died of typhoid fever, contracted in the swamps, and after his death, Schmeichel's mother married again, L. Schultz, both now being deceased. They had two children: Elvina who, is deceased; and Louis. Fred Schmeichel received only a meager education, the little teaching he received being at the German school. As a youth he worked on the home farm, and when he had reached his majority he secured his first eighty acres, fifty-five of which were partly cleared, with a small frame house and log stable. During the years that followed, he added to his property from time to time, first buying forty acres partly cleared, then forty acres of wild land, and still later eighty acres which were partly improved, and there he built one of the first silos in Cicero township, a fine frame house, a basement barn 52x100 feet, and a wagon and hog shed 30x60 feet. He carries on general farming, raises high grade horses and hogs, and specializes in Guernsey cattle. Mr. Schmeichel has won his present position by hard, industrious labor and by exercising a natural knowledge of his chosen occupation. In 1876 he was married to Miss Paulina Kurth, who died in 1895, having been the mother of children as follows: Levi, who married Minnie Brusewitz; Lydia, the wife of Charles Wussow; Arthur, who married Selma Wurl; and Laura, residing at home. Mr. Schmeichel was married (second) to Ida Wussow, born in Shawano county, and three children have been born to this union: Florian and Franklin, twins, the latter deceased, and Maynard, also deceased.

    Grunwaldt, Viola (Wussow)
Viola Grunwaldt, 94, passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2009, at Peabody Manor in Appleton, Wis. Viola, the seventh of nine children of Charles and Lydia (Schmeichel) Wussow, was born July 17, 1915, in the farm home of her parents located several miles south of Bonduel, Wis. After graduating from Shawano High School (1933) and obtaining a Teaching Certificate from Shawano Normal School (1934), she taught two years at Sohr's school, an eight grade country school, located east of Bonduel.
Viola married Carl Grunwaldt on June 20, 1936. He passed away on Jan. 13, 1947, as a result of a farming accident. Following her husband's death, Viola sold the family farm in the Township of Cicero, Outagamie County, and returned to teaching to support her young family. She often took her young children to visit relatives living in various parts of the U.S. On numerous occasions she organized family gatherings at her home located on South Lawe Street, Appleton, and later at Heritage Wood Manor, where she moved to following her retirement. In a recent diary she wrote, "If I could spend a day exactly as I liked, I would choose to have my entire family with me. It would not matter what we did - just to see them and their reactions to each other would be perfect joy!"
Throughout her life she was very active in the United Methodist Women and her churches. During her retirement years she often traveled to see her children and sewed hundreds of children's quilts to donate to those in need.
Sons, Mark (1943) and David (2007), and granddaughter, Christine (2006), preceded her in death.
Surviving are son, Joel and his wife, Noel, (Anchorage, Alaska) their three children, Peter (Rosey), Paul and Sarah; daughter, Jane and her husband, Robert K. Delmar Schmeichel9

    Obituary:
Town of Center - Delmar Edward Schmeichel, age 88, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 19, 2018. He was born in Appleton, son of the late Harold and Rosanna (Winters) Schmeichel, where he grew up with his brother Verl and sister Eunice.
Del married Rosemary Van Handel in 1950. Over the years, Del was a mailman and a school bus driver, along with helping to build several barns and houses. He dairy farmed for many years, where he was the first in the county to utilize artificial breeding to improve his dairy herd. In 1967, he opened Schmeichel's Welding, a blacksmith shop that allowed him the opportunity to invent and create. Above all, Del lived to serve others: family, neighbors, and community. In 1954, he helped form the Town of Center Volunteer Fire Department and served as Chief years later. He also served as a County Board Supervisor and a Commissioner on the East Central Regional Planning Commission.
Retirement allowed him the time to pursue his passion for training and breeding pacing racehorses. He is survived by his first racehorse, Magnificat.
After Rosemary passed away, Del got a second chance at love with Diane Magee, who he married in 1997. Del and Diane shared a love of all things horseracing.
Delmar will be sadly missed by his children: JeanMarie (Dave) Hinds, Steven (Lynn) Schmeichel, Jeffrey (Martha) Schmeichel; stepchildren: Johnna (Bob) Van Deurzen and Amy Self; grandchildren: Daniel (Nicole) Schmeichel, Erica Laabs, Sarah (Joseph) Murphy, Matthew Schmeichel, Tanner and Bridget Self, Chris Hinds, Ben Van Deurzen, Bob Van Deurzen, Amie (Timothy) Campbell and Nichole (JJ) Hermes; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Ruth Schmeichel; Jule and Joan VanHandel, Janet and Ruth Haviland; and brothers-in-law: Edward Jochman, Norbert Techlin, Richard (Alice) VanHandel, and Keith Haviland. Delmar was preceded in death by Rosemary and Diane; his parents, Harold and Rosanna; and his siblings, Verl Schmeichel and Eunice Jochman. Del was loved by so many more. For those who love and honor the people in their lives, love and honor come back.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 25, 2018 at St. Edward Catholic Church, N2926 State Hwy 47, Appleton, with Fr. Walter Stumpf officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in the parish cemetery immediately following Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Edward Catholic Church.
