    Biography:
CORNELIUS JAMES VAN PATTEN. The genealogy of the VanPatten family dates back to the great-grandfather, who came from Amsterdam, Holland, and bought a part of the noted Schenectady (N.Y.) patent or land grant of seventy-five thousand acres of land. He was one of twelve Hollanders who secured the grant, the land of which is now owned and occupied by some of his descendants. Simon, his son, and grandfather of our subject, was also a man of considerable importance in that vicinity, inheriting much of his father's ability, and he owned a large tract of land which he divided among his children. He was born in America, and when the Revolutionary war broke out he enlisted in the service to help in securing American independence, taking an active part in many a notable battle, and being present when Gen. Burgoyne surrendered to Gen. Gates after the battle of Saratoga, October 17, 1777. Surviving the war, he returned to his home in Schenectady county, N. Y., and lived to a good old age, when eighty years old retaining his sight, memory and wonderful activity. His wife was the daughter of Simon Fairley, of Glasgow, Scotland, and by her he had seven children; she too, lived, to be an octogenarian. They both belonged to the Dutch Reformed Church, and were widely known for their generous hospitality. Their son, John Baptist Van Patten, father of our subject, was born in Glenville, Schenectady Co., N. Y., and was reared to farming, becoming a very energetic and industrious man. He inherited a small sum of money which, with the fruits of his industry for a number of years, made a small fortune; but this he lost through the dishonesty of pretended friends whom he had trusted. Undaunted by this misfortune, he turned his face westward and settled in Painesville, Lake Co., Ohio, where he proceeded to accumulate more property. On March 9, 1806, he was married to Miss Betsey Elizabeth Van Patten, a very distant relative, whose father, Frederick VanPatten, was also a Revolutionary patriot. John B. Van Patten finally came to Wis-

consin, settling in Plymouth township, Sheboygan county, where he died at the advanced age of eighty-four years. He was a large, robust man, retaining his strength and weight up to the time of his death. His wife, who was a very active woman, died when eighty years of age. They had a family of eleven children, of whom ten reached maturity. Cornelius James Van Patten, the subject proper of these lines, was born March 12, 1828, in Glenville, Schenectady Co., N.Y., was there reared, and was a young lad when his parents removed to Ohio. There he received three months' schooling, in which brief time he mastered the rudiments of the primary branches, and being reared on a farm he naturally took up that vocation. In October, 1846, he came to Sheboygan county, Wis., where he followed agricultural pursuits eleven years; then went to Clark county, Mo., where he resided until 1861, in which year he returned to Sheboygan county, Wis., farming until he enlisted in the army. While in Missouri he had become a member of the "Sons of Malta," a secret organization which bound its members by oath to protect the Union, and they were furnished guns and ammunition. This military organization, under the direction of John C. Fremont, did much to preserve the State of Missouri from seceding from the Union; their colonel was David Moore, of Ohio, who led them in several engagements which took the form of regular battles, one of which was fought on the banks of the Des Moines river, near the Iowa State line. The Rebel force, with nearly fifteen hundred men and two pieces of artillery, made an attack on the Union force, which consisted of only 256 men, but the Confederates were repulsed, beating a hasty retreat. In August, 1864, Mr. Van Patten enlisted in Company B, Twenty-seventh Wis. V. I., and joining the regiment at Little Rock, Ark., he moved south with the army, where he assisted in the capture of the Rebel towns and forts. His regiment was then sent to Texas, and here it remained until July 14, 1865, when Mr. Van Patten was honorably discharged and returned to Wisconsin, resuming the vocation of farming. Selling his farm in Sheboygan county nine years later, he removed to Bovina township, Outagamie Co., Wis., where he purchased forty-three acres of land in the northeastern part of the township; subsequently he bought more land until he had a farm of 187 acres, which he still owns and cultivates. In February, 1894, having been appointed postmaster at Shiocton under President Cleveland, he removed to that village. Mr. Van Patten was married, in Sheboygan county, to a lady from Maine, who died while they were living in Missouri. His second wife was Miss Margaret Horn, daughter of Martin Horn, and they had two children: Jennie, now Mrs. August Krull, of Cicero; and Martin H., who is managing his father's farm, is married to Miss Eva Trader, and has one son, Cornelius. Mrs. Margaret Van Patten died December 19, 1862, and on May 23, 1866. our subject was married to her sister, Miss Nancy Horn. In politics Mr. Van Patten has been a lifelong Democrat, although he voted for Gen. Fremont in 1856, and for Abraham Lincoln in 1860. He has been chairman of the board of supervisors two years, besides filling other township offices.

Cornelius married Horn, Margaret Bef 1861. Margaret (daughter of Horn, Martin and Unknown, Unknownf) was born 8 Jan 1837, , , Ohio, USA; died 19 Dec 1863, , , Missouri, USA. [Group Sheet]

    Obituary:
Nanette A. Bohren, 81, Eau Claire, was set free from earthly bounds into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Tuesday evening, July 27, 2010, nine months after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Nanette Aileen Spoehr was born June 21, 1929, on a farm in the Town of Bovina, Outagamie County, to Leland and Nola (Hogoboom) Spoehr. When Nanette was 9 years old, her parents purchased "the home farm" near Navarino, Wis., where she grew up. She graduated from Shawano High School in 1947 and proudly attended every class reunion thereafter. Nanette was blessed with a beautiful voice, which she used to the glory of God by singing in the church choir, at weddings and at funerals.
In 1948, Nanette was united in marriage to Harvey Brandt and together they raised three children in Appleton. They later divorced. In 1979, Nanette married Derold Bohren; he preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 2009. In 1983, Nanette and Derold moved to a beautiful property on the banks of the Embarrass River near Pella, Wis., where many joyful hours were spent bird watching, gardening, fishing and enjoying visits with family and friends.
While living in Pella, Nanette was very active in her church, and one of her favorite activities was the Ladies Salad Luncheon, an eagerly anticipated annual spring event, which was attended by daughters, granddaughter, sisters, and nieces. She was also very active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Nanette's greatest joy and accomplishment was in raising her family; her "purpose in life." She loved her grandchildren with a special granny's love, and she fought so hard this past 9 months because she couldn't bear the thought of leaving her great-grandbabies. In 1980, at the age of 50, Nanette obtained her nursing license, graduating with honors, an achievement she was very proud of. She went on to work at several hospitals and nursing homes in the Fox River Valley and Clintonville areas, retiring in 1992. After moving to Eau Claire in 1999, Nanette cared for Derold throughout his long illness, and after she could no longer care for him at home, she was at his bedside reading and singing to him every day for three years.
After Derold's passing in January 2009, Nanette moved to St. Francis apartments where she made many new friends, and enjoyed playing cards, cribbage and working jigsaw puzzles. It was a happy time for her. Throughout her life Nanette loved words; she was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast and reader of books. She spent many an evening relaxing with a crossword puzzle with her dog-eared dictionary on her lap, or immersed in a good book.
Nanette was a loving and determined woman. A woman who was devoted to her family, who believed in the saving grace of God, and who was a champion of human rights and the environment. She was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she will be deeply missed. Granny we love you!
Nanette is survived by her children, Brian (Jill James) Brandt of Portland OR; Meredith (Phil) Seidl of Eau Claire; Amy (Mike) Nordlee of Appleton; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Emily (Chris) George and Logan of Chippewa Falls; Jonathan (Kristine) Seidl and Sheyenne of Rapid City, SD; Tristan (Christy) Seidl, Kyra and Evan of Fall Creek; brother, Bryce Spoehr of Black Creek; stepson Jim Bohren and Marilyn Bohren, both of Sheboygan, and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband, Derold, Nanette was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses, Leigh (Eleanor) Spoehr; Kieth (Gladys) Spoehr; Judith (Raymond) Henrickson; Rachel (Wendell) Pues; and a sister-in-law, Ellen Spoehr.
"Angels are never too distant to hear you."
Angels walk amongst us, gentle beings who hear the cry of a soul in need. Nanette's family would gratefully like to acknowledge those quiet angels who, over the past 9 months, came to her aide, and the aide of her family. The tireless nurses on 2nd floor Oncology at Sacred Heart Hospital, Dr. Muslim and his staff at the Cancer Center, Dr. Sandager, the staff at Dove Heathcare-West, especially those who cared for mom with such patience and kindness, and who did all they could to help Nanette's family through this long, hard, journey. The staff at Northwest Homecare and later, Northwest Hospice, especially Lori, Sharon, Mary Ann and Mike, who provided mom with comfort, when there was little comfort to be found.
"When our mortal eyes close on this world for the last time, our angels open our spiritual eyes and escort us personally before the face of God."
Funeral services for Nanette will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, August 7, 2010, at TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 209 S. Allen St., Appleton, with Rev. Brian E. Brandt, Ph.D., officiating. Friends may call at the church on Saturday morning from 10 A.M. until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established.
