Obituary:
Theodore "Ted" M. DeKleyn, age 89, of Menasha, passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2016 in the presence of his loving family. On November 12, 1926, Theodore Martin was born in Kimberly to William and Johanna (Royendyk) DeKleyn. Following high school, Ted enlisted in the United States Army in 1945 serving for two years during World War II. During his time in the military, he was stationed on the Luzon Peninsula in the Philippines as well as Okinawa, Japan. On June 12, 1948, Ted was united in marriage to Loretta Schrage at St. Mary Catholic Church in Menasha. He had great faith and always wanted to give back and one of the ways was ushering at the church for over 30 years. Ted had been employed by Kimberly-Clark in Kimberly for 34 years before starting his own business, Ted DeKleyn Painting and Decorating. He also worked at Harmony Homes and was involved with St. Mary Cemetery. While helping at St. Mary Cemetery, he was able to get a flagpole installed and painted and cared for the Blessed Virgin Mary statutes. He took great pride in caring for the statutes due to his incredible devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a veteran, Ted was heavily involved with many organizations. He served for 50 years with the American Legion Post 60 in Kimberly, many of those years as the Firing Squad Commander, participating in over 400 funerals of military veterans. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Allouez Assembly 1199 as well as Menasha Council 1838 Knights of Columbus. Ted was also involved with the Outagamie Veterans Council, V.F.W. Post Color Guard and Senior Vice Commander 10544 in Combined Locks, 8th District Officer V.F.W., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Pup Tent No. 97 Cootie. Ted was able to join other WWII Veterans on one of the Old Glory Honor flights and as a Knight, greeted many returning veterans at the Appleton and Oshkosh Airports. Ted also enjoyed having a garden at his home and shared the produce he harvested with his family and friends. Ted and Loretta shared many wonderful years together in Menasha watching their four children grow and have families of their own.
Ted will be missed by his loving wife of over 67 years, Loretta; their children: Linda (Gib) Mueller, Neenah; Richard (Jean) DeKleyn, Appleton; Lisa (Brad) Waldoch, Appleton; his grandchildren: Scott (Erin) Schafer, Chad (Kristy) Schafer, Adam and Emily DeKleyn, Hannah and Tess Waldoch, Stephanie (Dustin) Pollett; his great-grandchildren: Madison, Sydney, Paris, Lillian, Kylie, Kaitlyn, Kelsey, and Ryne; his sisters-in-law: Mary Alesch and Jan DeKleyn; as well as many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his son, Tom DeKleyn; his sister, Ann (Bud) DeWall; a brother, Willard DeKleyn; his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Ray and Mary Schrage; his brothers-in-law: Richard Schrage, Fr. Frank Schrage, and Don Alesch
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 am on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 528 Second Street in Menasha with Fr. Paul Paider officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the hour of the Mass at the church. Military Funeral Honors will be performed following the Mass. All Veterans and Knights are encouraged to attend the Mass to honor Ted for his countless years of service. Interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in the Town of Menasha. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
The family would like to extend a very heartfelt and sincere thank you to Dr. Mary Stastny, Dr. Brian DeMuri, and Lisa Knoff from the VA Clinic in Appleton for the many years of trust, friendship and understanding in caring for Ted.
They would also like to thank Dr. Anthony Phillips and his staff at Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology for their kindness and care.
As well as the wonderful staff of Renaissance Assisted Living in Appleton for the ability for making Ted feel at home over the past few months. Your kindness was greatly appreciated.
