Family History Researcher:
Daniel J. Ryan and Winnefred Powers came to the United States about 185 0. Daniel Ryan came from Castleconnell, Co. Limerick and Winnefred Powe rs came from Killaloe, Co. Clare. They were married April 6, 1856 in Chic opee, Massachusetts. They came to Buchanan, Wisconsin in the autumn of 18 57. They purchased Lot 7 of section 24, the deed of which was recorded Ap ril 7, 1858, in viol. 20D, p 79, Outagamie County records. This 80 acre tr act was covered by white and red oak, hard and soft maple, beech, birch, h ickory, basswood, elm, cherry, and ironwood. Many of the trees,particular ly the white oak, from the ground to the first limb measured 20 to 50 fee t. He cut down these trees with an axe. He and Winnefred with a cross-c ut saw, sawed them into logs and with a yoke of oxen rolled them togeth er into piles. The farm stumps measured 5 feet in diameter. They also c ut white and red oak fence rails 15 feet in length without a knot or spli t, and as straight as a line. He began to clear his 80 acres, building a one story log hous e, 12 X 16 feet, with two half windows and one door. The timber used he h ewed himself. A few months later he purchased a team of oxen for whi ch he built a small log stable. Later he bought a cow, and gradually addi ng to his stock of farm implements as he could afford them. About 1864 he built the house that they lived in. It was the first f rame house in the township of Buchanan, and about the same time erect ed a frame barn 32 X 50, shingled with split shingles, some of which sti ll remain in a good state of preservation. The lumber for these buildin gs was ripped by a sawmill about 2 miles east of the Ryan homestead. In 1 893 he built a frame house on a piece of land adjoining the home farm, a nd there he lived during his remaining years, passing away in February 2 4, 1907. His wife, Winnefred died October 16, 1903. They are both buri ed at St. Mary's Cemetery in South Kaukauna.. Although Daniel Ryan w as a very well known and influential man in his community, he devoted a ll of his time to his farming interests and never aspired to public prefer ment. In 1875 he bought Lot 8, section 24, which had hundreds of large mapl es. These maples measured from 2 to 4 feet in diameter. Annualy for yea rs he made gallons of maple syrup and enough maple sugar to supply them f or the coming year. During the Spring season it was not uncommon for the pioneers to wa lk to Green Bay to purchase necessities. In the early 70's the roads, whe re possible, were laid out on the lot or section lines. Winnefred (Powers) Ryan died on October 16, 1903 in the afterno on in her home in the Town of Buchanan. She had been an invalid through r heumatism for some time. Pneumonia settled in a few days prior to her dea th. Daniel Ryan became a citizen of the United States on November 29th, 1 870. On the day of his funeral it was snowing and the road into the farm w as full of snow. The Paper Mill had the whole shift of workers come and c lear the road so that the funeral could proceed from the house to the chur ch. After they cleared the road the workers went back to their jobs. Daniel Ryan's brother, Timothy Ryan left Ireland and went to Californ ia,and later settled in Seattle, Washington. He also had a brother Micha el Ryan who went to Sonora, California. Daniel Ryan adopted Michael Ryan 's three children February 1st 1879. He also had a brother Thomas Ryan w ho was in the Chicago area at one time. He also had a sister Bridgit, w ho went to California and married a Patrick McNamara and at one time liv ed in Knights Ferry, California. [WFT54PaulRyan.FTW]]

In the book "The Streets of Kaukauna" it mentions Ryan St as named after D aniel J Ryan the 1st president of the village of Combined Locks and a supe rvisor to the Outagamie County Board.

From the History of Outagamie County; July 21, 1888, Kaukauna, Wisconsin History: The first dwelling to be erected at the combined locks was completed last week on the Ryan farm. The house will be occupied by Thos. Ryan and undoubtedly is the nucleus of a large settlement which will spring up at that point. The cottage is 20x30 feet in size with an addition of 10x12 feet.

1889 Kaukauna Sun dated 3/29/1889; Fire in Buchanan about 11 o'clock la st Friday at Dan Ryan's barn, valued at $400 and stable worth about $200 t ook fire from some unknown cause and were burned to the ground together wi th 10 tons of hay. The grainery nearby containing a 1000 bushels of oats c aught fire, but the flames were extinguished before a great amout of dama ge done. The buildings, but not the contents, were insured. They will n ot rebuild this summer. The property was insured for $400 by Dan McClu ne at the Home Insurance Co of NY.

He leaves 3 daughters and 4 sons to mourn his death. The funeral was he ld at St. Mary's Church in Kaukauna. Scores of friends and relatives follo wed the remains to his last resting place.

He had been in feeble health for some time, and at se ven o'clock Thursday evening he died from diseases incident to his advanc ed aged of 84 years.Daniel Ryan was born at Castle Connell, Limerick county, Ireland, Decemb er 24, 1820. At the age of thirty years he came to this country, spendi ng his first few years in the East, where on April 6, 1856, at Chicopee, M ass., he was married to Miss Winnefred Powers. Mr. & Mrs. Ryan soon aft er came west, reaching Green Bay in 1857, from which place they proceed ed to Kaukauna, and Mr. Ryan purchased a trct of land lying in sectio ns 24 & 25 of the town of Buchanan. Here he made his home up to the d ay of his death, and ranked among the county's most prosperous farmers.Surviving him are seven children, Mrs Ellen Cripps, Duluth, MN., Mrs. An na Harney, Duluth, MN., D.J. Ryan and Malachi Ryan, Buchanan, attorney Tho mas H. Ryan, Appleton, Dr. M.C. Ryan, Marion, and Winifred Ryan, South Kau kauna. The funeral was held Monday forenoon at nine o'clock from St. Mary 's church and was attended by a large number, including besides the immedi ate family of the deceased, many from the surrounding country and the citi es as well. The following biography in additi on to what was published last week will undoubtedly prove of interest to t hose who knew the deceased.Daniel Ryan was born at Castle Condel, Limerick County, Ireland, Dec. 2 4, 1830. He came to this country May 29, 1850. The first few years after a rriving in America he spent in the east and on the 6th day of April 18 56 at Chicopee, Mass., he was married to Miss Winnifred Powers. Shortly af ter his marriage he and his bride started for the west by way of the Gre at Lakes. Mr. and Mrs. Ryan reached Green Bay in 1859. From Green Bay th ey proceeded to Kaukauna and at once purchased a tract of land in sectio ns 24 and 25 of the town of Buchanan, then a part of the city of Kaukaun a. Since coming to Wisconsin, Mr. Ryan has been a resident of the to wn of Buchanan and ranked among the most successful farmers of the county.

William Kennedy, the venerable white-haired sage of Appleton, in a communication to the Appleton Crescent, pa ys the following tribute to the late Daniel Ryan, of the town of Buchanan:
A few days ago in the town of Buchanan a person passed away from this life, and since then I have been thinking of this man, whom I have known intimately for more than 30 years; and it appears to me that he is entitled to something more than the mere Obituary Notice the papers record, especially to the men of lowly life. This man was in many ways a remarkable man: to be sure he was not very extensively known outside of the locality in which he died; he was not in evidence at political meetings or public gatherings of any kind; he was simple and unostentations in his life, but he was diligent in his chosen occupation and he was always in evidence at his church on Sundays and holidays. The face reveals the character of the man and this man's face revealed in naturally fine intellect with which with proper culture and favorable opportunities might have won him distinction. He was born in the year 1820, in Castle Connel, in County Limerick, Ireland, within the short distance of the city of the violated treaty. Castle Connel has been a distinguished place for more than 1000 years, it still contains the ruins of those strange structures erected there before the Middle ages. During this man's residence there the peasantry believed that it was a favorite haunt of the fairies, and perhaps it would be well, if their successors in our days would believe so still. A little bit of imagination does not do anybody any harm. This man arrived in America at the age of 30 years, and he first located near the city of Springfield Mass., where he married, and where he continued to resided until the year 1856 when came to the town of Buchanan where he has lived since. While in Massachusetts he was the employ of a retired merchant, who had been so attached to him that he offered to double its compensation if he would remain permanently with him. The men among whom this man was born, among whom he lived until he was 30 years of age were in many ways remarkable men. O'Connell use to call them (and he knew) "the finest peasantry under the sun." It was their fathers, according to the Duke of Wellington, that saved the British Empire from destruction, and historians of England concede it. These men were distinguished for the absolute purity of their morals. They knew little of sin, because they had but little conception of it. They bore some resemblance at least, to the holy man that hourly worship at the altars of God. They were loyal to their friends; they had a tender hearts; they were frugal and laborious in their lives, and they kept the faith in which they were born. The man of whom I am speaking inherently inherited the qualities of these men and they continued with him through his life. Nor are they likely to pass away with his life, because he has left behind him those of his own blood who have inherited from his virtues; and they are certain to be perpetuated through them for many years to come. This man was not rich. He was simply in comfortable circumstances for his vocation in life. But if the Palace has its pleasures, and the cottage is not without its felicities: and God, after all is not inequitable and the distribution of his gifts.
"Princes and lords may flourish and may fade, a breath may take them as a breath hat has made, but a bold peasantry, their country's pride, when once destroyed can never be supplied."
He was an Irishman that wrote these lines. He is known to the world of our days as Oliver Goldsmith. But in his days his friends, for short, used call him "Poor Goldy." And it would be well especially for Irishman, and for that matter, for all men, to occasionally looked in the books that Goldsmith wrote. All that is mortal of the man that I am talking about peacefully lies in the churchyard in the town of Buchanan adjacent to the church in which he worshiped in life, and there they will remain forever. In the years, of course, he will be forgotten; but the place he lies will not be forgotten by God, because the spot that entombs the ashes of a good man remains consecrated ground forever. But who is this good man of whom I have been speaking? His name is Daniel Ryan. - WILLIAM KENNEDY.

Mrs. Ellen Cripps, Former Kau kauna resident, is deadMrs. Ellen Cripps, 94, Kaukauna resident most of her life, died shortly be fore 9 o'clock Tuesday evening at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ben Hartzh eim, 518 Randall street, with whom she had lived the past year and a hal f. Mrs. Cripps was born March 4, 1857 in Springfield, Mass. She lived in K aukauna from the time she was 8 months old until she went to live with h er daughter. Before coming to Appleton Mrs. Cripps lived with her sister M iss Winifred Ryan, 405 W. Seventh street, Kaukauna. Active in the cathol ic Church, Mrs. Cripps was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis a nd the Altar Society of St. Mary church, Kaukauna. She was a member of t he Outagamie Pioneer and Historical Society. Survivors, in addition to Mr s. Hartzheim are another daughter, Mrs. John Lemmer, Escanaba, Mich.; t wo sisters, Miss Winifred Ryan, Kaukauna and Mrs. James Harney, Chishol m, Minn. Her brother was the late Judge Thomas Ryan of Appleton. Buri al in St. Mary's parish cemetery.

In 1884 he left Wisconsin, traveling across the northern part of the United States and arrived in the Washington Territory (now the State of Washington). He stayed for about one year and in 1885 came to California. He settled on some land in LaGrange, California. He was married to Catherine Gleeson on October 10, 1887 in Oakdale, California. His neighbor in LaGrange was Patrick Gleeson and his wife, Agnes. He was Catherine (Gleeson) Ryan's brother. In 1897 he and Catherine and the family returned to Kaukauna, Wisconsin as they were victims of a draught and failure of crops. Patrick Gleeson and Agnes Corrigan stood up at his wedding. Daniel and Catherine were married at St. Stanislaus Church by Rev. P. McGuire on 10 October 1887.

1910 Kaukauna Sun dated 7/14/1910; Darboy - D. J. Ryan was elected as a de legate at Appleton to attend the Democratic convention at Milwaukee July 1 2.

Biography:
Daniel J. Ryan was Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Buchanan Township. He has been actively identified with the agricultural interes ts of Outagamie County for the past 15 years. He is the son of Daniel and Winifred (Powers) Ryan, natives of Limeri ck and Clare, Ireland. They were married in Chicopee, Massachusetts on Ap ril 6, 1856 and came to Wisconsin about 1858. Daniel J. Ryan was the third of a family of eight children and he rem ained at hime with his parents until he was 22 years of age. At that ti me he went to the Territory of Washington (now State of Washington) whe re for one year he worked for wages. He then went to California, with a s heep shearing crew. For the next twelve years he was engaged in raising w heat, rye, and barley on 2,500 acres of rented land in LaGrange, Californi a. While in California he came in contact with his father's brothers, Ti mothy Ryan and Michael Ryan in the Tuolumne County area. He also ca me in contact with his fathers sister, Bridgit. Bridgit was marri ed to a Patrick McNamara who lived in Knights Ferry. In 1897 he returned to Outagamie County, and since that time has resi ded on the old homestead in Buchanan Township. A part of this he inherit ed and a part he purchased. He engages in general farming, markets dai ry products, hogs, cattle, and some poultry. He raises hay and grain f or feed. He milks on an average of 11 cows, and at present has a fine we ll fed herd. He is also breeding 2 Belgian horses. He is at present remo deling his house and barn, and has 80 acres under the plow. His proper ty is fenced with barbed and woven wire. In political matters he is a Democrat, but in local matters is inclin ed to vote independent. He is at present Chairman of the Board of Supervi sors of Buchanan Township and has been a member of the School Board f or 9 years. He and his family are members of the Holy Angels Catholic Chu rch in Darboy. In 1884 he left Wisconsin, traveling across the northe rn part of the United States and arrived in the Washington Territory (n ow the State of Washington). He stayed for about one year and in 1885 ca me to California. He settled on some land in LaGrange, California. He w as married to Catherine Gleeson on October 10, 1887 in Oakdale, Californi a. His neighbor in LaGrange was Patrick Gleeson and his wife, Agne s. He was Catherine (Gleeson) Ryan's brother. In 1897 he and Catherine a nd the family returned to Kaukauna, Wisconsin as they were victims of a dr aught and failure of crops. Catherine Gleeson came to the United Stat es at the age of 15 years.
In the book "The Streets of Kaukauna" it mentions Ryan St as named after D aniel J Ryan the 1st president of the village of Combined Locks and a supe rvisor to the Outagamie County Board.

Mr Ryan was born Feb 12, 1862 in Outagamie Coun ty and is the son of Daniel and Winifred (Powers) Ryan, natives of Irela nd who were married in Massachusetts and came to Wisconsin about 1858. Th ey first settled on eighty acres of land, a part of which is includ ed in Mr Ryan's present property, at that time a wild tract of timber lan d, and Daniel Ryan began to clear this land, building a one story log hous e, 12x16 feet with two half windows and one door, the timber which he hew ed himself. A few months later he purchased a team of oxen for which he bu ilt a small log stable, and shortly afterwards bought a cow, gradually add ing to his stock of farm implements as he could afford them. About 186 4, Mr Ryan built the house in which Daniel J Ryan is now living, the fir st frame house in the township of Buchanan, and about the same time erect ed a frame barm, 32x50 feet, shingled with split shingles, some of which s till remain in a good state of preservation.The lumber for these buildin gs was ripped by a small sawmill about two miles east of the Ryan homestea d. In 1893 Daniel Ryan built a frame house on a piece of land adjoining t he home farm, and there he lived his remaining yeras, passing away in F eb 1906, while his wife died Oct 16, 1903. Both are buried at St. Mary's C emetery in So. Kaukauna. Although Daniel Ryan was very well known and an i nfluential man in his community he devoted all his time to farming interes ts and never aspired for public preferment. Daniel J. Ryan, was the thi rd of a family of eight children, and he remained at home with his paren ts until he was 22 years of age, at which time he went to the State of Was hington, where for one year he worked for wages. They have 6 childre n: daniel T, a telegraph operator in San Francisco; Catherine I who gradua ted from the Kaukauna High School in 1907 since which time she has been en gaged in school teaching; William D. a graduate of the Kaukauna High Scho ol class of 1909, now assisting his father on the home farm; Winnifred M w ho graduated from the same instituton in 1910 and is now living at home; E dward J, a student in the schools and Mary E who is now two years old.

"Anton Welhouse w as best known for the barns he built, 88 of them, according to his record s. The largest one was constructed in 1918 in the town of Buchanan for D an Ryan who wanted "the biggest barn in the County." He was born in the town of Buchanan, Wisconsin and li ved there as a farmer most of his life. As Combined Locks Village Preside nt, he was a member of the Outagamie County Board of Supervisors from 19 25 until 1933. He was a former member of the County Apricultural Committe e, he was one of five persons honored in 1931 by the University of Wiscons in for outstanding work in agricultural and home making fields. He receiv ed a Certificate of Recognition at the University's Farm and Home Wee k. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kaukauna and the Holy Na me Society at St. Mary's Church, Kaukauna.He had little formal education, but he was honored by the University of Wi sconsin because of his contribution to the brewing industry. He develop ed a cold resistant strain of barley and took a prize at the Columbian Exp osition in St. Louis, Missouri. For 6 weeks each winter he would co me to his nephew, William Ryan's house in Madison for a short course at t he University. He always enjoyed Amos and Andy on the radio while ther e. He lived in Kaukauna with his sister Miss Winnifred Ryan.

Seventh St., Kaukauna, died at 4:40 this morning at his home after a 12 week illness. Born Dec. 17, 1862, in the town of Buchanan, he lived there as a farmer most of his life. As Combined Locks village president, he was a member of the Outagamie county board of supervisors from 1925 to 1933. A former member of the county agricultural committee, he was one of five persons honored in 1931 by the Universi ty of Wisconsin for outstanding work in agriculture and home-making field s. He received a certificate of recognition at the Universitys Farm and Home Week. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Kaukauna, and the Holy Name Society at St. Mary church, Kaukauna. Mr. Ryan retired about a year ago and moved to Kaukauna. Survivors are one brother, Judge Thomas H. Ryan, Appleton; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Harney, Cloquette, Minn.; Mrs. Ellen Cripps, Kaukauna; Miss Winifred Ryan, Kaukauna. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 Wednesday morning at the St. Mary church, Kaukauna, with the Rev. Alphonse Roder in charge. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

WHEN I WAS A HIRED MAN By Stan Kauth"...for many years I caddied over the hills and terrain where we had play ed as kids and worked as hired men."During vacation from high school my older brother, Bernard, and I worked f or Malachi Ryan, an outstanding farmer in Outagamie County. In fact, he w as awarded special recognition by the Wisconsin Department of Agricultu re and local- students attending the University at Madison would tell of s eeing his picture in Babcock Hall. I recall hearing that he was the fir st to introduce alfalfa in this area, as prior to that timothy was the chi ef hay crop.Malachi was an interesting Irish bachelor farmer whose parents had settl ed here as early as 1857. I'm sure they bought the hilliest land in the co unty and I recall how we had to pitch all the hay with forks while neighbo rs were using hay-loaders.We would arrive at the farm at seven o'clock in the morning after fortifyi ng ourselves with a good breakfast our mother prepared for us before our t hree-quarters of a mile walk. Malachi ran a disciplined, well-organized op eration. At mid-morning his sister, Winifred, would find us with cold lemo nade and snacks. We returned to the house for dinner at 11:30 and later en joyed a half-hour rest listening to the radio for news, weather report a nd baseball. An older sister, Ellen Cripps, was always ready with a detail ed account of the game, but Malachi had only time for the score. Then it w as back to the hills and fields again until supper time. By the time we wa lked home we were "knocked out" and slept until awakened to breakfast a nd the routine of another day.Threshing ~.as a more exciting time when the Wiedenhaupt crew (mostly fami ly) moved in and spent two or three days threshing and enjoying the bounti ful table of good food. It makes me feel nostalgic to write about it and r ecall that Malachi offered me my first bottle of cold beer to enjoy with t he rest of the crew. Malachi never indulged and was temperate in many habi ts. He never swore or used profanity, but did have a bit of Irish vernacul ar to fit the occasion.One day while we were loading manure a delegation of local merchants and p otential golfers, along with Mr. Killick. a golf pro, came to discuss t he purchase of seventy acres of the Ryan farm to landscape for a nine-ho le golf Course. It became a fact and for many years I caddied over the hil ls and terrain where we had played as kids and worked as hired men.The Depression came, the Kaukauna Golf Club failed, and Mr. Ryan got the l and back. Several ran it and I leased it for the years '39 and '40. My you nger brother, Paul, was the greens-keeper. The draft took us in early ' 41 and eventually the fairways and greens reverted to Cow pasture. Malac hi was President of Combined Locks Village for many years and I recall h ow the young boys from the village would play a game of "Heads and Tail s" with him. A bounty of fifteen cents was paid for crows but gophers brou ght only a nickel. The kids would come with the tails one day and two da ys later their brothers or cohorts would appear with the heads. Malachi wo uld look at them a little askance, but would go along with them.I can see him yet, so erect, a twinkle in his eye and a fast jaunty wal k. He was quite a guy.

Mrs. Anna Hardy, 89, pioneer Head of the Lakes resident for whom the community of Harney, near Esko, was named, died Saturday night in a Duluth hospital. She had been ill about two years. The former Anna Ryan, Mrs. Harney was born in Kaukauna Wisconsin, and came to Duluth in 1885. She was married to James J. Harney in 1888, and the couple homesteaded in Thompson Township, where the community of Harney is now located. Both Mr. and Mrs. Harney were active in community affairs. Mr. Harney served several terms as supervisor of Thomson township. He died in 1939. Mrs. Harney was a member of Our Lady of Sacred Heart Catholic paris h, in Cloquet, where funeral services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday wi th the Reverend Father Thomas Bouchard officiating. Rosary services will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Meraw Funeral Chapel. Burial wi ll be in Cavalry Cemetery in Cloquet. Mrs. Harney is survived by five sons, Martin P. Duluth News Tribune and Herald Travel and Recreation Director, and John J. of Duluth, Leo F. of Harney, Minnesota; Malachi L. of Washington D.C., and Thomas P. of Dunkirk, New York, a daughter, Mrs. J. A. Osbolt, of Chisholm, a sister, Miss Winifred Ryan, of Kaukauna Wisconsin, and 11 grandchildren.

Biography:
THOMAS H. RYAN, Judge of the Municipal Court at Appleton, was born in t he town of Buchanan, this county, January 21, 1867.Daniel and Winnifred (Powers) Ryan, his parents, were natives of Irelan d, born in County Limerick and County Clare, respectively, and both ca me to the United States about the year 1848 and were married in Massachuse tts two years later. After seven years they came to Outagamie county, Wisc onsin, and bought unimproved Government land in the town of Buchanan. To t he original purchase of eighty acres Mr. Ryan added at different times unt il he had acquired 300 acres. He died February 24, 1907, preceded by his w ife on October 16, 1903. They were the parents of four sons and four daugh ters and reared their children in the same faith to which they belonged-t he Roman Catholic religion. Their children were: Ellen, the wife of Pet er Cripps, of Kaukauna; Mary, deceased; Daniel J., residing on the old hom estead and chairman of the board of supervisors; Malachi, a resident of Bu chanan; Anna, who married James Harney and has her home in Duluth; Thom as H.; Winnifred, whose home is with her brother, Malachi; and Dr. M. C. R yan, of Oklahoma. Mr. Ryan was a man of pronounced characteristics, posses sed of a level business head, strictly temperate in his habits, an abstain er from the use of tobacco, a consistent member of the Catholic Church a nd of Sunday observance, never aspired for official position, kind ly as a father and neighbor and a man of unblemished reputation. Thom as H. Ryan was educated at the Ryan high school, Appleton, and was graduat ed with the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wiscons in in 1891. He took the law course in the State University from which he w as graduated June 16, 1892, and succeeding which he began practicing his p rofession at Appleton, first in partnership with A. B. Whitman and later a lone. lie was city attorney from 1897 to 1907, and was then elected Jud ge of the Municipal Court in which official position he has since serve d. The principal recreation of Judge Ryan is in looking after his farm a nd engaging in literary pursuits. He is a Catholic in religion, a Democr at in politics and socially is identified with the Knights of Columbus a nd the Catholic Order of Foresters. October 27, 1897, he married Elizabe th Cuthbert, and to this union three daughters and two sons have been' bor n.

For years it has been a source of regret that our county has never had i ts history published. The story of its pioneers, their location in the dif ferent parts of the county, the privations and hardships endured and the m any incidents of adventure and romance have never been told. At differe nt times the pioneer society has discussed ways and means whereby a reliab le history of the county could be published, but with no definate result s. During the past few weeks determined steps have been taken to accompli sh the long desired result. After considerable discussion Judge Thom as H. Ryan, of Appleton, has been selected as editor in cheif of the wo rk and to aid him the folowing gentlemen have been named as an advisory bo ard: Henry D. Ryan and I. N. Stewart, of Appleton; John D. Lawe and C.E. R aught, of Kaukauna; Peter Tubbs of Seymour; Eben E. Rexford, of Shiocto n; Louis Jacquot, of Hortonville; and John Dey, the present president of t he Pioneer Society. Other members of teh board will be added as the work p rogressees. The Goodspeed Historical Assoc. of Chicago, who for the past q uarter century have been sucessfully engaged in this line of work, a re to be the publishers.

Thomas H. Ryan Succumbs to Long Illnes s, Thursday Rites Saturday for Prominent County Resident, Native of Town of Buchanan W as Municipal Judge from 1933-1943Thomas H. Ryan aged 77 years, native of the town of Buchanan, one of the m ost prominent residents of Outagamie County, well known in the county a nd former municipal judge, died at his home, 703 South Memorial Drive, App leton, at 1:30 Thursday morning after an illness which dates back to the m iddle of last October.He was born in the town of Buchanan January 21, 1867, and had lived in App leton since 1891. He was married in that city to Elizabeth Cuthbert in 189 7.Mr. Ryan was appointed municipal judge in 1933 and was re-elected to ser ve until May 1, 1943. He was the first Municipal judge in the county.He served as Appleton city attorney and district attorney in Outagamie Cou nty and held positions in the Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Colu mbus and Catholic Knights of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Outagamie C ounty Bar and the American Bar Association. He was a member of St. Mary 's Catholic church, Appleton.He practiced law in Outagamie county until the time he was named municip al judge and returned to practice of law May 1, 1943, continuing until t he time of his illness.Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Sister Mary Hilaire of Rosema ry College, River Forest, IL., Mrs. Francis J. He h ad been ill since last October 19.Former Judge Ryan was born January 21. 1867, the son of Daniel and Winifr ed Powers Ryan who has settled in the town of Buchanan 10 years previosl y. He attended Ryan High School in Appleton and was graduated from the Uni versity of Wisconsin in 1891. He was admitted to the bar, after he got h is degree in law the following year and he practiced in Appleton 51 years.His first law partnership was woth A. B. Whitman. Former Judge Ryan serv ed as city attorney from 1897 to 1907 when he was named the county's fir st municipal judge. He retired from office in 1915 to return to private pr actice, forming the partnership of Ryan, Carey and Frank. He was a candida te for state attorney general in 1916. He was appointed municipal jud ge by Governor A. G. Schmedemann in 1933 and held the office until last Ma y.Former Judge Ryan was one of the first backers in a movement for a new cou nty courthouse and he dedicated the new building when it was complete d. He also dedicated the Memorial Drive Bridge. He was a member of the Wis consin Board of Visitors, a member of the library board from 1920 to 193 3, a member of the city board of education from 1924 to 1933, a former cou nty supervisor, past president of the Outagamie County Pioneer and Histori cal Society, member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Forester s, Holy Name Society and od St. Mary's church.He was author of "Special Verdicts", "Judicial Legislation", "Are Instruct ions Which Inform the Jury of the Effect of Their Answers Inimical to Just ice?", the latter which appeared in the 1940 Wisconsin Law Review.The former judge was known throughout the state for his hobby of carvin g. His woood carvings won a number of prizes in exhibitions.Survivors are the widow, Elizabeth; four daughters, Sister Mary Helaire, R osary College, River Forest, IL.; Miss Patricia Ryan, Appleton; M rs F. J. Hart, Milwaukee; and Mrs E. A. Bachhuber, Appleton; two sons, Cut hbert D. Ryan of Toledo, Ohio and Lieutenant Thomas A. Biography:
At one time he wrote a detective novel (unpublished) that was based upon a case he had in which a hired man killed the farmer, and burned his body in a haystack so that the number of bones left would fit in a cigar box. He was a gifted artist. He carved many fine wood pieces, sculpture on furniture. To this day there is a crucifix at Holy Rosary College in Chicago that was carved by him. He was a Riemenschneider Class wood carver of museum quality pieces.
His daughter Ruth, entered the convent and took the name of Sister Hilaire O.P. She taught Botany in the Science Department of Holy Rosary College, in River Forest, Illinois.
Patricia Rose became a lawyer and practiced law with her father in Appleton, Wisconsin, and then with her brother and then alone.
Claire was a Social Worker and retired when she married Frank Hart an attorney with A.T. & T. He was the general counsel for the Wisconsin Telephone. Cuthbert Ryan worked as a commercial artist. He did the first designs for Seven-Up.
Thomas Ryan was a lawyer and practiced law in the Army. He was attached to the Judge Advocate's Division.
Romona "Blue Bell" Ryan married Edward "Eddie" Bachhuba who was a surgeon. He became the Associate Dean of Marquette School of Medicine. Their daughter Dr. Mary Watts practiced in Seattle, Washington. Their son, Dr. Stephen Bachhuber practiced in Portland, Oregon, and Dr. Tom Bachhuber practices in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Thomas H. Ryan's wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Cuthbert) Ryan was a medical technologist. She received her masters degree in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Family History Researcher:
Great Aunt Winnifred Ryan never married. She kept hou se for her brother, Malachi Ryan on another Ryan farm in Outagamie Count y. When the nieces and nephews visited she would save all the colored Sun day comics for a year. There were usually a few kittens under the por ch or they could go through all the portraits she kept in an armadeilo she ll basket. He kitchen range had a reservoir for hot water, the table t op was zinc and there was a great little pump for the kitchen sink. The w ell, however, gave sulfer water and she made coffee with it. Nothing cou ld beat Aunt Winnie's crisp ginger and molasses cookied. She was free wi th her opinion of Hitler and Father Coughlin, but she never gave away h er cookie receipe.

Miss Winifred Ryan, 90, 405 W. Seventh St, Kaukauna, a member of the Fox R iver valley's pioneer families, died this morning in Kaukauna after an ill ness of four months. She was born Feb 22, 1869 in the town of Buchanan. Fu neral Services will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kaukauna with buri al in the parish cemetery. There are no immediate survivors.

Ryan, a native of Appleton, Wisconsin, where he was born, M ay 30, 1872, was the son of Daniel Ryan and Margaret Powers Ryan. He w as married to Miss Nan Donohue in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. For 20 years he pr acticed dentistry both in Wisconsin and at Beggs, Oklahoma, where he mov ed in 1909. He lived for some time at Okmulgee before coming to Oklaho ma City. Survivors are his widow at the home address, 1329 N.W. 18th Street, a nd four sons, and two daughters: Clem R. Ryan and E.T. Ryan Oklahoma Cit y; M.H. Ryan, Los Angeles; Carl M. Ryan, Bartlesville; Mrs. Keith Sloan, L os Angeles; and Miss Virginia Ryan, of the home address. Also nine grandc hildren and two brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Malachi Rya n, Kaukauna, Wisconsin; Judge T.H. Ryan, Appleton, Wisconsin; the siste rs Mrs. Ellen Cripps, Miss Winifred Ryan, Kaukauna; and Mrs. Anna Harne y, Cloquet, Minnesota. The bearers were Ray Weems, J.J. O'Loughlin, Bert Steffee, W. Howl, C .P. Staed, and Ed Ziegler.

Entitled "A Teacher Starting Out" written by Winifred Cripps Hatzheim for The Outagamie County Historical Society (Circa 1941?)After graduating from Kaukauna High School in 1912, I attended Outagamie C ounty Training School, also on the north side of Kaukauna. We were the fir st class in the new building. Upon graduation in 1913 I was qualified to t each a rural school. I had hoped to teach my home school and even thou gh my uncle was on the school board, I was not accepted as I had no experi ence.My first job was on the Oneida Indian Reservation. It was a new district a nd had no school building. One of the families has just added a room to th eir home and that was used as the school. I boarded with a white family ac ross the road and their two children and theree Indian children were my fi rst pupils. Soon more came and I had twelve in all. This was all that cou ld be accomodated around the small pot-bellied stove and my desk. The n ew building was ready for the next year, but now that I had experience I w as hired in my home district.After eight years I returned to the reservation to a State Graded School w here I taught the seventh and eighth graders. I liked this position very m uch and never had any discipline problems. The hard part was getting to sc hool. We lived on a farm near Combined Locks and my uncle and I would lea ve home at six o'clock on Monday morning to go by horse and buggy to the N orth side of Kaukauna to catch a streetcar to Green Bay. There I chang ed to a Green Bay and Western train which took me to the Oneida station. B aggage in hand, I walked the six miles to my school and arrived there by n ine o'clock.The few times I went home during the year I was permitted to leave on Frid ay noon so I could ride with the mailman to DePere. There I caught a stree tcar to Kaukauna where my uncle met me.
Wisconsin was in the forefront in public education. The general populati on of the state was agricultural and saw education as the main rou te to a better life for their children. The immigrants who came at that ti me (by and large) either did not have access to education, such as the Iri sh, where it was actually against the law to educate the "common person ", to some Germanic states (there was no country ofGermany until 1871), where various avenues for education were available a nd well supported. Wisconsin had the first "Kindergarten" through the effo rts of a woman who brought the idea from Europe.There were many "teacher's colleges" such as the Downer College which w as housed in the older buildings on the U of W - Milwaukee Campus. After t wo years a student was "certified" and could teach.The 4 year degree was preferable and could lead to a quick rise to leaders hip in a district school system or specialty teaching at a high school lev el. In some areas where financial and distance considerations made it ha rd to go away, young people could "test out" for certification with a loc al teacher as tutor, sponsor and proctor for tests, which were mailed to t he college for evaluation. Still other areas had the best educated pers on available to teach either formally or informally in the community. T he Peco family of Green Bay were the first to set up a school there, bei ng "people of substance" (had money), they contracted to have a teacher f or their children and neighbors could send their own.

She was born February 4th, 91894, in Duluth Minn., the daught er of Peter and Ellen Ryan Cripps, and had been in Appleton resident sin ce 1938. She graduated from Kaukauna high-school in 1912, and in 1982 s he marked for 70th high-school graduation anniversary, and was given speci al recognition for being the oldest graduate. She married Bernard Hartzhe im, July 9th, 1938. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic church. Surv ivors include two nieces: Agnes Bies, of Kaukauna; Evelyn Schneider, of Ch ilton; five nephews: Jerome, Alfred, and Norbert Schmidt, of Kaukauna; Fra ncis Schmidt, of Brillion; Lawrence Schmidt, of Shawano; and several cousi ns. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, in 1981, a bro ther, Pearson and a sister, Emily. The complete funeral will be Tuesda y, November 25th, 1986, at 7:00 p.m. from St. Pius X Catholic Church, wi th Rev. Donald Ronald Colombo officiating. Internment will be in the S t. Mary Cemetery, Kaukauna.

Daniel T. Ryan, who was born in LaGrange, California returned in 1897 to W isconsin with his parents and family. On July 6, 1907 he was living in Sa gola, Michigan. Prior to arriving in San Francisco he was working for t he Northwestern Pacific Railroad in Oregon. July 15, 1913 he was livi ng at 1291 Pine St. in San Francisco.
He returned to California some time prior to 1915. He became a Telegraph Operator for the NorthWestern P acific Railroad. In 1919 he went to Willits, California as a Stationmast er for the NorthWestern Pacific Railroad. He quit the railroad in Apr il or May of 1923.
He went to work for the Bank of America in Sonoma, Cal ifornia.
Sometime prior to September 1915 he and Elizabeth Hegarty met in S an Francisco.
Daniel Ryan was a Past President of the Native Sons of t he Golden West. Elizabeth Hegarty was a member of the Native Daughte rs of the Golden West. It is believed that they met at one of the danc es or at the Panama Pacific Exposition. Elizabeth was on one of the floa ts at the parade opening the Panama Pacific Exposition. They were married on September 20, 1915 at Mission Dolores. They we re married in the original Old Mission Dolores built by the Franciscans a nd the Indians. For there honeymoon Daniel and Elizabeth traveled by railroad to Kauk auna, Wisconsin. Daniel had a railroad pass as he worked for the North We stern Pacific Railroad. It was then that Elizabeth Ryan had the opportuni ty to meet Daniel Ryan's parents.
They again traveled to Kaukauna in 1917 at Christmas time after the birth of their first child, Daniel Vince nt Ryan.
In 1915 Catherine (Sister Benedict O.P.) Ryan, before she entered t he convent traveled to San Francisco to see the Panama Pacific Expositio n. She traveled with Aunt Winnefred Ryan. This was prior to Daniel Ryan 's wedding.

Sister M. Benedict O.P.Catherine Ryan entered the Dominican Order of Sinsinawa, Wisconsin. She w as the first member of her order to get a PHD degree in Latin. She receiv ed this degree at Fordham University. At one time she was the assistant P rovincial of her order. While she was on the Dominican Council she work ed to get all the members on contract and paying into Social Security. Th is enabled the retired Sisters to draw benefits. One story about Catheri ne Ryan was back on the Kaukauna farm the kitchen cooking range was not us ed in the summer. One Fall day, Catherine fired the stove up without real izing that the family cat was taking a nap in the oven. Catherine Ry an in 1915 traveled with her Aunt Winnefred to San Francisco to view the P anama Pacific Exposition. She graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1907.

See Image Sr. Mary Benedict Ryan, O.P., dies - Sister Mary Benedict Ryan, O.P., former member of the general council of the Sinsinawa Dominicans (1949-61) died May 4 at St. Dominic Villa, Dubuque, IA. Funeral services were held May 7 in Queen of the Rosary Chapel here with burial in the motherhouse cemetery. Sister Benedict was born in Turlock, CA and made her first profession of vows on June 30, 1920. She was a teacher and administrator in elementary and secondary schools of her congregation until her election in 1949 to the general council. Sister Benedict's only immediate survivor is one sister, Sister Marguerite Ryan, O.P., Sinsinawa.

Sister Benedict Ryan died May 4,1981 at St. Dominic Villa, succumbi ng to a gradual physical decline. She was ninety years old and in the 61 st year of her religious profession.Born in Turlock, California September 14, 1890, Catherine was the daught er of' Catherine Gleason of Tipperary, Ireland and Daniel Ryan of Kaukaun a, Wisconsin. With her three brothers and two sisters she early formed a f amily bond of great devotion which has lasted throughout their lifetime s. The family moved back to the old Ryan homestead in Wisconsin in 1897 a nd Catherine graduated from the Kaukauna High School in 3 years. She recei ved her B.A. degree from Rosary College and her graduate courses mainly fr om Fordham University.Sister was a teacher living in Appleton when she applied for entrance in to St. Clara Novitiate. Her last teaching position was in Combined Lock s, Wisconsin. After profession, June 30,1920, Sister began a new teachi ng ministry, first in New York at OLM; then at Holy Trinity, Bloomington w here she was also prioress; St. John, Milwaukee and in Oklahoma City whe re she was vicaress for five of her eleven years there.Sister's great ability to administer and her kind and forthright way wi th students and adults led to her election as council member in 1949, assi sting Mother Benedicta. After twelve years on the council, Sister Benedi ct was appointed prioress at St. Dominic Villa, serving there selflessly f or six years. Back to mission life and limited teaching, she endeared hers elf to all in the St. Thomas Apostle community - parishioners, students a nd sisters, giving invaluable behind- the-scene services. A hearing loss a nd other limitations led to her assignmentto St. Dominic Villa in 1979 where she lived out her past two years in pra yerful and cheerful participation.Sister's only immediate family survivor is Sister Marguerite Ryan, who liv es at the Mound and was her frequent visitor at the Villa. Many other rela tives, including her sister-in-law, Mrs. Eileen Ryan and Sister Hilaire Ry an, her Sinsinawa Dominican cousin, joined Sister at the funeral servic es May 7 in Queen of the Rosary Chapel. Fathers John Gerlach and T. D. Smi th were concelebrants of the Mass of Resurrection.May Sister Benedict, who saw so clearly the joys and infirmities of the hu man condition, now behold them transformed into eternity.

William Ryan graduated from Kaukauna High Scho ol in 1909. How could a civil engineer and former artillery officer be able to recite so many poems and classical quotations from memory? Because his grandmother, Winnifred Ryan, could not read, so after every evening meal the family had to remain at the table for a reading until the dishes were done, and then the family prayed the Rosary. His wife, Eileen Powers, came from the Waterford branch rather than the County Clare Powers family. She was a teacher, first in a one room country school, and after gra duating from the University of Wisconsin she taught High School Civics and Debating at Wausau, Fond du Lac, and Madison. She worked one summer session at Jane Addams' Hall House. She told of teaching in the one room country school right after graduating from High School. She was sent to live with a German Speaking family and said that she almost starved to death until she could speak a little German. from Paul Ryan notes.

Mr. Ryan was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and its Holy Name society, American Society of Professional Engineers, Madison Figure Skating club, Knights of Columbus; and Third Order of St. Dominic. He is survived by his wife, the former Eileen Powers of Mauston, whom he married in 1921; three daughters, Eileen, San Francisco; Mrs. F. J. Rice, Fairfield, Conn.; and Mrs. F. J. Eberhardt, Annapolis, Md.; and a son Dr. Thomas Ryan, Milwaukee. Other survivors include three sisters. Sister M. Benedict, O.P., Dubuque, Ia.; Sister M. Marguerite, 0. Winifred Ryan, Sister Marguerite, graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1 910. Sister Marguerite taught at the Ryan School in Kaukauna for ten years prior to entering the convent. She earned a Master's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois. Her contribution to fun on the farm was a reflex fist in the face to a sheeted "Ghost" who accosted her on her late return from the rural school. The next day there was an embarrassed neighbor with a black eye. She told of the time when she was a postulant at Sinsinawa she was caught a few times riding the horses bareback with her full habit on by the Mistress of Novices. She was always known to have a big smile on her face all the time.

Sister Marguerite died at St. Dominic Villa on December 18, 1984 at the age of 90 and in the 57th year of her religious profession. Winifred Ryan was born on May 16, 1894, in Madera, California, one of three daughters and three sons born to Catherine Gleeson of Nenagh, Ireland and Daniel Ryan of Kaukauna, Wisconsin. The family later moved to Kaukauna where Winifred grew up and received her grade school education at St. Mary's and attended Kaukauna High School. She completed her studies at Oshkosh Normal and began her teaching career at a rural school in Combined Locks. She went from here to Milwaukee where she taught at Victor Berger School until 1926 when she entered the congregation. Mr. And Mrs. Ryan both died while their family was still young, so Winifred took over the role of mother and helped raise her younger brothers and sisters. It was for this reason that she waited until she was thirty-two years old before coming to St. Clara. Her youngest sister Mary had just finished high school and her other sister, Sister Benedict, was already in the community. Winifred was received as Sister Marguerite on August 4, 1927, and professed a year later. She taught in grade and high schools for over forty years --in Madison (Edgewood), Milwaukee (St. Robert), Chicago (St. Sabina, Visitation, and Trinity), Minneapo1is, Champaign, and Omaha (St. Cecilia). Sister returned to the Mound in 1971 and remained there until 1983 when she moved to the Villa. One of the sisters at the Villa remembers her as principal of Edgewood Grade School. She was a teacher respected and loved in a special way by the students whom she taught English. Her students seemed to excel so well that seldom if ever were they placed in freshman English classes, but, rather, were placed in sophomore classes. She was highly respected for her intelligence and grasp of her subject matter. The students loved being in her class. She worked long hours at her school work, going to her classroom early in t he morning, and remaining long after school hours. Sister Hilaire, a relative, remembers her as a child. The Ryan family had purchased turkey eggs for their farm and as the eggs hatched little Winifred was put in charge of shepherding the turkeys. She could often be seen in the fields, shooing the turkeys in the direction she wanted them to go. Another sister remembers her as having been a very dedicated teacher at St. Robert's. She was a determined person with a deep sense of her own dignity and capability. The students looked forward to being in her class. Sister worked in the Mound sewing room, making habits for some years. When her eyesight grew weaker she had to forego that duty, and one of her new hobbies which she developed was creating lovely cards made by pressing flowers and inserting them by means of her own technique into the paper. The process for doing this was found among her possessions at the Villa .Father Don Georgen, O.P. celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Marguerite on December 21, 1984.

He had been employed at Thilmony Pulp and Paper Company for over 35 yea rs prior to his retirement in 1968. He was a member of the Thilmony Quart er Century Club and Kaukauna Moose Lodge, the AARP and the Kaukauna Athlet ic Club. He was Kaukauna Third Ward Alderman during the 40's and 50's , pa st member of Kaukauna Farming Commision and Board of Appeals. He was acti ve in Boy Scouting and the establishment of the Girl Scout Camp, Winnecom as in Kaukauna. He is survived by his wife, Margarite DeBrue Ryan; a daugh ter Mrs. George (Celine) Voris, Schaumberg, IL., two sons, Daniel, of Tipl er and Patrick, Kaukauna; two sisters Sister Benedict Katherine Ryan, Chic ago and Sister Maugerite Winnifred Ryan, Sinsinawa; and six grandchildre n. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Chur ch, Kaukauna with burial in the parish cemetery, The Rev. Richard Thomas w ill officiate.

According to family records, John James Harney was a captain in the ar my in WWI, served in the trenches in France, and when they fought Pancho V illa on the Mexican Border. However, in the midst of battle he got appendicitis and was shipped by train to Hot Springs, Arkansas, to the army hospital to recover where he met a nurse named Edith Pederson, who he married. He was detailed to the field for ce in Minnesota and headed that organization until September 1927. He th en received a transfer to the Intelligence Unit of the same bureau in Chic ago. He served as Administrator of the Bureau of Prohibition in St. Pau l, Minnesota, from July 1927 to February 1932. He served as administrat or in Chicago, Illinois from February 1932 to July 1933. He returned to S t. Paul in August 1933 as investigator for the Alcohol Beverage Unit and c ontinued in this role until February 1934. He then resumed his Special Ag ent status with the Intelligence Unit. He was called September 16, 19 36 to serve as the Assistant to the Commissioner of Narcotics. In additi on to the duties of this post, he also serves as Assistant Chief Coordinat or of Treasury Enforcement Agencies, having been appointed in December, 19 41. Mr. Harney saw service in World Was I with the Marine Corps. He w as an accomplished Boxer duing his college days. In 1935 he served in t he Secret Service guarding President Roosevelt.

From Linda Harney Files; MALACHI L. HARNEY, (1895-1932) Law EnforcementMalachi Lawrence Harney had an illustrious career as Treasury Agent and dr ug enforcement agent. In 1947 he was named Chief Coordinator of the Treas ury Enforcement Agencies. In 1957 he was named Technical Assistant to t he Secretary for Enforcement. He was in charge of officers handling narco tics peddlers, smugglers, tax evaders and counterfeiters. In additi on to direction the training of Treasury agents, agencies under his contr ol included the Narcotics Bureau, the Alcohol Tax Unit, Customs and the Se cret Service. In 1959, after his retirement from public service, he was n amed head of the Illinois Division of Narcotic Control. Malachi's broth er James G. Harney was a Federal agent during the prohibition era. While s earching for the operators of an illegal still in Minnesota, James was sh ot to death in 1932. That was the same year that Malachi helped build t he federal income tax case that sent gangster Al Capone to prison. Malac hi died 29 February 1983/4, in Edina, Minnesota. . He co-authored the following books on law enforcement with Jo hn C. Cross: "The informer in law enforcement" 1968; and "The narcotic off icer's notebook," 1973.

He died Friday at age 88. Harney ended his 35-year federal care er in 1955 as assistant commissioner of the U.S. Narcotics Bureau. Previo usly he had been chief agent for the Treasury Department in Minneapolis a nd head of the Treasury Department's alcohol unit in St. Paul. 1984 Duluth News Tribune and Hearld dated 2/29/1984; Esko's "Mal" Harn y, a former T-man, dies - Malachi L. "Mal" Harney, 88, an Esko native w ho had a direct role in smashing the crime empires of Al Capone and Murd er Inc. will be buried in Fort Snelling National cemetery today. Harne y, one of seven children raised on a family farm in Esko, died Friday in S t. Louis Park, Minn., Health Care Center. He was born in Duluth. At t he time of his retirement from the U.S. Treasury Department in 1955, he w as said to be as powerful in federal law enforcement activities as J. Edg ar Hoover, though seldom in the public eye as was the then director of t he FBI. Harney at one time had 3000 narcotics officers and Treasury agen ts under his command. Early in a 35 year career with the Treasury Departm ent's law enforcement division - much of it during the roaring '20s and Pr ohibition era - he captured a Minnesota bootlegger who killed Harney's bro ther and fellow agent, James, at a moonshine still deep in the woods ne ar Wright and Tamarack. Later, he was involved in investigations and pros ecutions of Capone and racketeer Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, a kingpin in t he crime syndicate Murder Inc. Capone was convicted of income-tax evasi on and send to prison in 1932; Lepke went to the electric chair in a 19 36 murder and drug conspiracy case that began through an informant Harn ey would identify only as "Zeke". The prosecutor Harney worked with in t he Lepke case was Thomas Dewey, who later lost the campaign for preside nt against Harry S. Truman in a stunning upset. Harney's record as an age nt in the era of "G-men" and "T-men" made him a nemesis of Midwestern boot legging in the Prohibition war against the underworld. By the end of Wor ld War II, he had risen to assistant commissioner of Treasury Department 's Narcotics Bureau and in 1947 was named Chief Coordinator of all Treasu ry Department enforcement agencies.Washington newspapers of the 1940's and 50's reported Hardy was called up on by Truman to devise plans for protecting the President. White House aid es at that time insisted he was comparable to FBI chief Hoover in determin ing federal law enforcement policies. After retiring from the federal ser vice at age 60, he headed the Illinois Narcotics Control Division for fi ve years and later coauthored two books still use in police work, "The Inf ormer in Law Enforcement" and "The Narcotics Officers Notebook." Upon han ging up his gun, Hardy said, "I never used it, but I let the hoods kn ow it was handy." He also retained a pride in having been a Treasury agen t, saying, "Never underestimate a Treasury agent. They're like the Roy al Mounties - they always get their man." Though born in Duluth, he was r aised on a family farm in Esko mirrored what are now Harney and Himango ro ads. He attended school in Cloquet, graduating from high school there, a nd then attended the University of Minnesota, where he was a fullback on t he Golden Gophers football team. He was in the Marines during World W ar I and for a time was a teacher and football coach at the former Superi or East High School before becoming a Treasury agent. His wife, Gladys, d ied several years ago. Mr. H arney is a well-known former resident of Cloquet, having received his elem entary and high-school education here, and has many friends in the communi ty who will be interested in his appointment to the position. From Linda Harney Files; JAMES GERALD HARNEY (1899-1932); He was born 14 November 1899 in Minnesota, the son of James Harney and Anna (Ryan ). He became a Treasury Agent, like his brother, Malachi. James married Geraldine Flynn and they had two children. James was shot to death while investigating an illegal still during prohibition. According to family history he was murdered and buried under a brush pile. The case was solved by his younger brother, Martin, a newspaper reporter (who had learned to speak Finn). This is written up by Martin Harney and was made in to a radio play. The killer was sentenced to Stillwater prison for life but was released in the 1990s. Chart reference: MNJKL.WES.

Associates said that Mr. Harney, attached to Northwest district prohibition headquarters in St. Paul, was shot while searching for operators of a still which he and three other agents had found. The other three in the party said they last saw him alive yesterday afternoon. Search for him was under way all night and today.

L. F. Harney R oadmaster at Virginia for the Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific Railway, has retir ed from a railway career spanning more than 47 years. To mark his final d ay of work recently, the railway veteran received congratulatory letters f rom a number of company officials including E. P. Stevenson, vice presiden t, prarie region, Canadian National Railways. Mr. Harney, a native of Cloq uet, joined the D. W. and P. in 1921 as a sectionman, and was appoint ed a foreman in 1923. He has worked at many points on the D. W. & P. a nd was named Roadmaster here in 1957. Mr. and Mrs. Harney were fet ed at a retirement party at the American Legion clubrooms on January 17t h, when he was presented with a purse from fellow employees and friend s. Mr. Harney started his railway career at Harney, Minnesota, a town nam ed after his father, who was a pioneer in that area. Leo plans to bide h is time between his home in Parkville and his cabin at Lake Vermilion .

From Niece Marion Harney Newbury in April 2002;Catharine Edith Harney Osbolt was my aunt and godmother. She was bo rn in Harney Minnesota, educated at the University of Wisconsin and Univer sity of Minnesota, taught school until age 42 when she married Jake Osbol t, who owned a bank. She was the first woman to be named "Principl e" of a high school...in the '40s when the men were off to the services, s he knew more than most and assumed the leadership role with a special disp ensation from the State of Minnesota..I have a copy of the certificate... in those days women could not assume leader ship roles and in fact it wasn 't until 1947 that a married woman could be a teacher.. when a male arriv ed to be principle, Catharine went into the Red Cross and served for sever al years, when she returned she went to Chisholm,, Minnesota to teach..th at is when she met Jake..he had the bank of Chisholm. They were devot ed to each other and when Jake retired they went to Hot Springs, Ark and s pent the rest of their lives there

You have my mother to tha nk for saving your parent's 50 yr memrobilia.. she had a cedar chest fu ll of document.s She even had the letters her students sent her when s he had to quit teaching to marry my Dad in 1923.....of course, the lette rs were all bemoaing her leaving. And when mother died, I took the docum ents, giving them out to family members...she had all the newspapers on Ji m...gave those to Tim... and then Dad started giving me all momentos wh en a brother died. I even have Uncle John's army hat! with all his badges .....I have Aunt Catharine's permission from the state of Minnesota allowing h er to be a principal when Mr. Nigg, our principal got called to service in during WWII... it was a big thing for a woman to be a Pincipal in those da ys, in fact Catharine should have been given that slot 2 years prior but t hey brought in an ousider (Nigg) as only men could be principals.....but t hey were getting so short of men for teaching that they had to give up a nd give it to someone who was well qualified. She taught Nigg how to hand le the job and when they brought in the old coach fresh from the wars i n2 years later, she did resign and went into the red cross/Korea...I ha ve her buttons.... Anyway it turned out well for when she left the Red Cro ss she went to Chisolm, Minn to teach and met Jake Osbolt., Bank preside nt and widower. She was 42, he was 15 years older. she came and ak ed me (a college freshman at the time) what I thought of the age differenc e... I could have cared less..I thought they were both REALLY OLD!! so th ey had some 30 plus years of maraige and Catharine was really upset wh en he died..He was seriously ill and in his 90s, she fed him by hand, stra ined food and they were about to cut off his legs...circulatory proble ms and she was all for it!!..When she told me,Nedless to say with the cal lowness of the young, I said to my sister, "she should stuff him" and ke ep him forever. It was a real love match. Jake loved his CAMEL cigarett es and his whiskey at 6 very evening..Armegeddon is right.. and I thought the weather in Minnesota a challenge.. ..But we were prepared..and never had windstorms in Duluth or Cloquet/Es ko as we had the magnificent Lake Superior to storm over...and the wind st orms would wear themselves out over the lake and we would have piles of s now and COLD but little else to worry about. We just have earthquakes her e...however as my son says, Earhquakes are not his problem..it is the fir es that wiped him out in Berkely.

Catharine Harney Osbolt, 8 7, of Hot Springs died Monday January 11th, 1993, in Hot Springs. A nati ve of Cloquet Minnesota, she was a graduate of Esko High School and attend ed the University of Minnesota and Superior State teachers College in Supe rior Wisconsin, where she received her bachelor's degree in education. S he taught for many years and several senior high schools and in northeaste rn Minnesota, was a hospital recreation worker for the American Red Cro ss and during World War II, an active worker in the Council of Catholic Wo men for many years and served as Deanery president of the Hibbing Counc il in Minnesota. She continued to work in the Catholic Council upon movi ng here and was a member of St. John Church, once serving as preside nt of the Alter Society, and the Prime Time Catholics and the Knights of C olumbus Auxiliary. Survivors include two brothers, Leo Harney of Hot Spri ngs and Martin Harney of Monterial, Wisconsin. Several nieces and nephew s; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 9: 00 a.m. Friday in St. John Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Baker officia ting. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery under the direction of Gross Fun eral home. A rosary will be said at 4:00 p.m. today in the Gross Funer al Home Chapel.

From Linda Harney MARTIN PHILIP HARNEY (1909- living 2001)Martin Philip Harney, who uses the Irish spelling O'Hatharine, was bo rn 22 July 1909, the youngest son of James Harney and Anna (Ryan) of Minne sota, and younger brother of the famous Treasury Agents Malachi and Jam es Harney. Martin married Rosella F. Singpiel and they have three childre n. In 1961 Martin P. Harney is listed as vice-president of Lake Country T ravel Service, and in 1965 he is manager of H&H Manpower Inc. H is daughter is another Catharine (Rosella's daughter) although she go es by Kay and they have a daughter Catharine.notes for Marion Newbury; I forgot to mention that the murder of James Har ney, a federal agent, was solved by the youngest of family, Martin Harn ey ( Martin O'hAlhairne). Martin was a young cub reporter working for t he local newspaper. There was a strong Finnish community in Tamarack a nd Martin had learned to speak Finnish. When law enforcement couldn't fi nd out what happened, Martin went into that area, speaking Finn, acting li ke a Finn and the men thinking he was one of them, told him, bragging th at they had killed the agent and buried him under brush pile in the wood s. Acting on this information, the body was found. The man responsible w as sent to Stillwater Minn. prison for life. However, he was released a nd the 1970's and Tim Harney, (James's son) found where he was paroled a nd working as a handyman and went to talk with him. Tim would be ab le to give you details of that meeting although he came away believing t he guy hadn't really done it. Martin wrote radio script and this story w as broadcast over a national station and 1950's and '60's

2006He is the last of the family of Anna Ryan and James Harney and he will be burried from the church in Cloquet where he and the younger children were baptized.
Hi Marion,Dad has left us for a better place. He passed away today at 12:30 p.m. at Zilber Hospice in Wauwatosa, at 96 years old. His last week was peacful and painless following three weeks of difficult struggle. He became very disoriented on Thanksgiving Day and deteriorated over the next few weeks into what was termed delirium. Nothing could bring him out of it and the doctors recommended hospice shortly before Christmas. The funeral will be at Our Lady Queen of Peace, Cloquet, from which Mother and Jimmy were buried, Friday, Jan., 5, at 11 a.m. He will be buried with Phyllis at the old Catholic cemetery. I know you cannot attend and that you will keep him in your prayers. At the risk of irreverence, I do hope there are trout streams and ski hills in Heaven. I hope you are well and that you had a lovely visit with Dirk and family over the holidays.
Always a news man and reporter where timing is everything, wouldn't you know he would wait until almost the very end of a year to leave. God Bless Him.I always remember that he was Grandma Harney's "baby" he came 4 years after the rest of the kids..who were usually 2 years apart and he was the last and he was movie star handsome and one could say (as Grandpa did) that he was spoiled. I do know that he was dapper and he was dating Phyllis when he invited Dad to her house for dinner and they had Hulda there...that is how they met..and I loved it! Dad had been slowly desolved in tears since mother died as they were so close and what a God send Hulda was..Dad was 79 and so Martin must have been74 and there they were double dating!! and for the next 15 years Dad and Hulda traveled everywhere ( Dad's free railroad passes).The Harneys usually outlived their mates and so it is a wonder that their last years are happy. Such a handsome family and the brothers were so close with a lot of love and as with all good Irish, they tried to hide it. Uncle Mal is the only one I remember that could be a bit spontaneous, (as was Grandpa Harney)I agree we have "roots" to be proud of and an 8th cousin in the Powers line (J Wilpolt) to be thankful for for putting it all together in his history....Of course, I do believe thaat Anna Ryan was working full time to get that history together. Sister Hilaire Ryan died September 6, 1986 of pneumon ia. She was 87. A member of the class of 1921, Sister Hilaire came ba ck to Rosary College in 1928 to teach after receiving a Ph.D in biology fr om the University of Illinois. She retired in 1974, and lived on campu s, attending the greenhouse and tutoring until she was striken with Parkin son's disease in 1984. Sister Hilaire spent the last two years of her li fe at St. Dominic Villa, the Dominican retirement house in Dubuque, Iowa. Sister Hilaire left her mark on Rosary College. The garden tucked be tween Coughlin and Power is named Ryan Park for her. Thrift and resourcef ul, she created the park with plants she nurtured in the college greenhou se and slabs of concrete left over from the construction of Coughlin Hal l. She and a student helper labeled many of the trees on campus, writi ng the names in Latin and English on wooden plaques. Friends recall the many ways Sister Hilaire worked to make the Rosa ry campus beautiful. Sister Gregory Duffy, who headed the Rosary Colle ge drama department from 1938 until her retirement in 1970, remembered t he magnificent costumes Sister Hilaire sewed for more than 30 years of Ros ary plays. "In those days we did three major productions a year," said Si ster Duffy, "and Hilaire, who was very interested in theater, sewed beauti fully. She always did a great job."

She was also a graduate of Marquette Law School and was a p racticing Attorney in Appleton until her retirement 7 years ago. She w as a member and served as secretary for the Outagamie Bar Association f or many years. She was a member of the Phi Mu and Delta, Gamma Sororiti es also was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and was active in chur ch work. From Pioneers in Wisconsin Law; Rose Patricia Ryan, 1928, (1902-1969)The first woman to practice law in Appleton, Rose Patricia "Pat" Ryan w as born in Appleton on Feb. 28, 1902. She was the daughter of criminal law yer and soon-to-be first Outagamie County municipal judge, Thomas H. Ryan.After graduation from Appleton High School in 1920, Pat attended Lawren ce College, receiving a B.A. degree in 1925. An accomplished pianist, s he spent the year following graduation at Lawrence Conservatory of Musi c. Also, during that time, she was a member of a piano duet that played wi th the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra. Then, deciding to become a lawyer li ke her father and her brother Tom, she chose Marquette University for h er law school, graduating in 1928.Pat's father believed in education. Although somewhat unusual for the time s, all of her sisters also obtained graduate degrees.Returning to Appleton, she first practiced with her father. Later she shar ed office space above the meat market on West College Avenue with her brot her, and after World War II, with attorneys Syd Jacobsen and Paul Cary.Pat was active in the Outagamie County Bar Association and served as secre tary for many years. In those days before specialization, she had a gener al practice but "leaned" toward probate and wills work. Patricia Ryan rema ined active in full-time practice, doing the work she loved, until seven y ears before her death on Oct. 8, 1969.

Just one month ago he moved to Gainesville to live with h is daughter. Cussy, one of six children, was born August 25, 1909 in Apple ton, WI. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and received a M aster's Degree in Fina Arts from the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts. He wo rked as a designer several years for Libbey Glass then taught art in the T oledo Public School system for 33 years at Scott and Bowsher high schoo ls retiring in the early 1970's. After his teaching career, he continued h is art career as a commercial artist specializing in silk screen work f or Lucas County, doing art projects at the Lucas Co Recreation Center f or the childrens Winter Wonderland, the Toledo Mud Hens and the Universi ty of Toledo. Cussy was, for many years, a swimming instructor at the Bo ys Club and also was an active member of St. Patrick's of Heatherdowns Par ish as well as the Heatherdowns Country Club. Cussy was preceded in deat h, six weeks ago, by his wife of 57 years, Elaine "Kookie" Ryan. Below is an article from the Appleton, Wisconsin Post-Crescent; da te November 1976From Tucson, Arizona, comes the story of a former Appleton Attorney, Thom as A. Ryan, who was surprised by the gift of a new, $20,000 Mercedes Be nz 300D because 32 years ago, while he was a World War II captain and ta nk commander, he saved the lives of many German children hidden in a castle. As reported in the Tucson newspaper, Ryan came onto a castle in the woods near Wolfsburg. German officers occupying the castle surrendered to Ryan without incident. In the castle were art treasures by the likes of Rembrandt and Van Gogh, hidden there because the museums were they had hung were in danger of being bombed. The castle also was a refuge for 32 children of high-ranking German military officers. Ryan remained at the castle about a month before returning to his command post 300 miles to the south. While he was at the command post, Ryan was made privy to secret information that the Russians would take control of the Wolfsburg area That bothered him, because he had heard that the Russians had executed many children of German officers in Berlin. So without orders, Ryan returned to the castle and after some finagling with British authorities, who controlled it, was able to evacuate the children. The adults sneaked away through the woods and fields, Ryan recalled. At the time Ryan was given a hand-carved dagger that had once been owned by Frederick the Great. The heirloom had been given to Ryan by one of the German families, in appreciation for his life-saving deed. Many of the children Ryan had saved tried to reach him, but the letters kept coming back from Appleton marked "deceased". That's because the letters were going to the home of his father, also named Thomas Ryan, who died in 1944. The elder Ryan was an Outagamie County Municipal Judge. A year ago, while attending a paratroopers' convention, Ryan met a general who asked about the children. The general said the commander of NATO 's ground forces, General Johann Kielslmansegg, had inquired about the incident. Three of Kielsmansegg's children were among the 32 children Ryan had saved.Ryan, a retired Colonel, wrote the retired general and asked about his "second family". Kielsmansegg wrote back saying his nephew would see Ryan soon in Arizona. Ryan received a call from Count Dr. Gunzel von der Schulenburg-Wolfsburg, the nephew. A couple of hours later, he and Kielslmansegg's daughter were at Ryan's home with the Mercedes, which they presented on behalf of the 32 children who were hiding in the castle.Ryan had a little something for them, too. The dagger, that once carried by Frederick the Great. It was the German family's last remaining heirloom. The Russians had destroyed all of their other treasures when they occupied the castle.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Longtime Wisconsin resident Thomas Edward Ryan, of Portland, Ore., died on March 13, 2016, at the age of 91. He was born Dec. 21, 1924, in Oconomowoc, Wis., to W.D. "Bill" Ryan and Eileen (Powers) Ryan. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Edgewood High School in Madison.
Early experiences in the U.S. Army influenced his career in medicine. Tom served in the infantry and later in medical administration on evacuation assignments with hospital trains that traversed the United States. He attended medical school on the G.I. Bill and earned his M.D. degree in 1952 from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in Madison. He married Joan (Williams) Ryan in 1958 and they raised their family in Whitefish Bay, Wis.
For more than 35 years, Tom and his medical partner Dr. Fred Gaenslen operated a private orthopedics practice in Milwaukee, Wis. Tom enjoyed letter writing and correspondence with family, cousins, and several lifelong friends. He appreciated genealogy, music, history, ice skating, and reading. He also documented many Ryan family events and memories with a Rolleiflex camera.
Tom is survived by his wife, Joan (Williams) Ryan; children, Ann Ryan Solomon (Rick Solomon) of St. Louis, Mo., Ellen Ryan (Mike Tanaka) of Denver, Colo., Clare Ryan (Chris Lindhjem) of Seattle, Wash., Jean McHale (Rich McHale) of Portland, Ore., Mary Sommer (Kim Sommer) of Bloomington, Ind., Sheila Ryan (Demian Ebert) of Portland, Ore., and Mike Ryan (Joe Monteil) of Seattle, Wash.; and AFS daughters, Paula Simpson (Justin Simpson) of Townsville, QLD, Australia, and Keiko Koyama of Ageo, Japan. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Sheila Eberhardt of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Eileen, Gwyneth, Rhian, Arthur, Carmen, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
No public services are planned. Family members will celebrate his life at future gatherings and will also fondly remember Tom and Joan's 50th wedding anniversary celebration held July 19, 2008, in Portland, Ore.

At a young age, Tom became a proud member of the U.S. Navy and served at the end of World War II. He was stationed in Newport, RI on the USS Missouri and the USS Rochester. After two years of service, he attended the University of Notre Dame and Canisius College on the G.I. Bill.
Tom was passionate about his work in sales and was a long-time employee of Mohawk Finishing and Star Finishing and Touch-Up. After his retirement from sales, he worked as a driver for Phoenix Courier.
Though he loved working in sales, his true love was Notre Dame Football. Go Irish!
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Rosemary (Messina) Harney, son Thomas E. Harney III, daughter Mary Catharine Harney Miller (Paul), and his sister Margaret "Peggy" Harney Pagano (Anthony). He is predeceased by his parents and his eldest sister Mary Catharine Harney Donahoe.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 12PM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church located at 501 E. Orange St. Lancaster, PA 17602 with Father O'Brien as celebrant.

Lawrence Timothy "Tim" Harney passed away Oct. 31, 2016 with his loving wife of 61 years at his side.
Tim was born on July 26, 1931 to Geraldine (Glynn) Harney and James Harney in St. Paul.
After being orphaned at a young age, he was raised in Duluth by his uncle John Harney. Growing up, Tim was active in sports. He played hockey for the UMD Bulldogs. He also coached youth hockey and was instrumental in building the facilities for the Woodland Hockey rinks. He continued to play an active role in the Duluth Amateur Hockey Association for most of his life. Tim graduated from UMD in 1954. He owned an accounting firm until he sold the business and semi-retired in 1996. He continued to work part time for the firm until 2001. After he "retired", he continued to work out of his home preparing income taxes and providing accounting services until two years ago. Tim was also active in the National Guard and later Army Reserve for 32 years. He retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Tim was a lifelong member and very active in St. John's Catholic Church. He served on numerous boards and committees. He also volunteered as an usher until a few years ago.
In 1955, Tim married Virginia "Ginny" Cayou. Together they raised five children. One of Tim's favorite places was the cabin he built on Sturgeon Lake. The family spent most of the summer there when the kids were young. He taught his kids how to sail, water ski and work on building projects. He was always building, fixing and puttering around the cabin. Tim's cabin was a retreat where multiple generations of family and friends gathered. Tim and Ginny spent long weekends there until they sold the cabin last fall.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Patrick Harney; and grandson, Garrett Fichtner.
He is survived by his wife, Ginny; brother, Bill Trentor; children, Katie (Dick) Fichtner, Kevin (Mary) Harney, Tim (Stephanie) Harney, Molly Harney, and Dan (Heather Taft) Harney; grandchildren, Derek (Sarah Jensen) Fichtner, Brandon (Tarah) Fichtner, Marijah Tolo, Mia Minkenen, J.T Harney, Jordan Harney, Molly R Harney; and great-grandchildren, Ian and Ally Jensen-Fichtner, Dezaray, Chase and Trent Fichtner.
MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, with visitation one hour prior in St. John's Catholic Church, 4230 St Johns Ave, Duluth, MN 55803.
