    Sgt. Elmer Vandenberg, Sixth Street, is a member the 914th Signal Company which was awarded the Meritorious Service unit plaque for Superior performance in the Mediterranean theater of operations. Vandenberg is currently stationed at the AAF service command in Italy.

    Vandenberg, Elmer AnthonyElmer Vandenberg, of Kaukauna, age 85, died at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King on April 6, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. He w as born December 15, 1919, in Stanley, WI, a son of the late Arthur and Ca therine (Heiting) Vandenberg. He married the late Ruth Vanevenhoven on Sep tember 18, 1947, in Kaukauna. Elmer was in the Army Air Corp in World W ar II and finished his military service in the Army Reserves retiri ng as a Master Sergeant. After his retirement in 1982 from International P apers Thilmany Mill, he was involved in many activities.Elmer was a member of the Kaukauna Lions Club, Kaukauna Athletic Club (Per son of the Year in 1991), Thilmany Quarter Century Club, Kaukauna Alumni A ssociation, Quarterback Club, Wrightstown American Legion Post 436, Kaukau na VFW Post 3319, and the Rainbow Club. Elmer also enjoyed bowling with h is brothers, the trips he took with his sons, and going to the many KHS at hletic events and in particular Cross Country (Friends of Cross Country Aw ard 1999) and Wrestling.He is survived by seven sons: Thomas (Sherril), Sheboygan, WI; Richard (Ru th), Kaukauna; Anthony (June Bongers), West Bend, WI; Joseph (Debbie ), De Pere; Jon (Jo Ann), Little Chute; Steven (special friend Yati), Appl eton; Robert (Kristy Hoffman), Kaukauna; and 11 grandchildren: Alison, App leton; Ryan, USAF Milwaukee; Ross, Little Chute; Tricia, Kaukauna; Kevin B ongers, Wausau, WI; Sara Bongers, Minneapolis, MN; Brianna and James, Litt le Chute; Mark, Kathrine, and Lee, Kaukauna. He is further survived by thr ee brothers: Ray (Margaret), Harry (Marie), and Roy (Pauline), a sister Ma rcelain Vandenberg, Kaukauna; a sister-in-law "Mitt" (Wodjenski) Vandenber g, sister and brother-in-law Jan (Gene) Schiedermayer, Missoula, MT; broth er and sister-in-law, Tom (Peg) Vanevenhoven, Yuba City, CA; brother-in-la w, Eloy (Red) Vanevenhoven, Kaukauna; sister-in-law, Dorothy Vanevenhov en Eslien, Oshkosh; and special friends Skip, Sue, and the Leigh Grube Fam ily of Sherwood.In addition to his parents and wife Ruth, he was preceded in death by a br other, "Johnny" ("Mitt") Vandenberg, a sister, Irene (Vandenberg) Schoo l, a brother-in-law, Alois School, sisters-in-law: Virginia (Hartzheim) Va ndenberg, Mary Lou Vanevenhoven (Jack) Lowes, Joan Vanevenhoven, Valery Va nevenhoven (Ed) Knox, and brothers-in-law: Norbert (Eleanor) Vanevenhove n, Robert (Vivian) Vanevenhoven, and Richard Eslien.Elmer's funeral service will be 11 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2005, at HO LY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Ja ck T. Mullarkey officiating. Viewing and visitation will be Sunday at t he Boettcher Family Funeral Home, 2401 Fieldcrest Drive, Kaukauna, fr om 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Monday at CHURCH from 10 a.m. until t he end of service. Full Military Burial Honors will be performed at Chur ch following Elmer's service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being esta blished in his name.Special thanks to the entire staff of the Wisconsin Veterans Home and in p articular the CNA's (especially Dad's favorite - Angela) who cared for h im during his stay. God's blessings to Pam, Deanna, Laura, Ruthanne and t he Hospice Volunteers who made his last months on earth more comfortable.
