    Biography:
JOHN SCHUH, well-known and respected as a representative well-to do farm er of Grand Chute township, Outagamie county, is a native of Bavaria, Germ any, born April 5, 1840. Jacob Schuh, father of our subject, was a carpent er, and followed his trade in Germany until 1854, when he concluded to t ry his fortune in the New World. Gathering together what means he coul d, he sailed with his wife and family-consisting of three sons and one dau ghter-from Bremen on the three-masted schooner "Gustav," bound for Baltimo re, at which port they landed after a voyage of forty-five days. Their de stination was Wisconsin, as cheap homes were offered to settlers the re at that early date, and, journeying by rail to Chicago, they we nt on by boat to Milwaukee, thence pushing their way into Washington count y, where, in Addison township, Mr. Schuh bought forty acres of wild lan d, paying $350 for same. He commenced to work at his trade, for six shill ings a day, and our subject assisted him at three shillings per day, the o ther boys devoting their time to clearing the farm. The family lived the re until 1865, when they moved to Freedom township, Outagamie county, a nd here Mrs. Schuh passed away in 1870, aged seventy years; Mr. Schuh di ed in Milwaukee in 1892, at the advanced age of nine-two years. Their chi ldren were as follows: Josephine, Mrs. Joseph Foster, of Milwaukee; Jaco b, who died in 1889 in Freedom; John; and Charley, who died in Marshfiel d, Wisconsin. John Schuh received all his literary education in his nati ve land, for after the family came to this country his parents needed a ll the assistance he could give them, and he has been self-supporting fr om an early age. Under his father's tuition he learned the trade of carpe nter, and remained under the parental roof until past twenty years of ag e, when, on August 28, 1861, he enlisted, at Addison, Wis., in respon se to the call for 300,000 men, becoming a member of Company G. Ninth Wi s. V. I. They were sent to Milwaukee, drilling there until early in 186 2, when they wereordered to Fort Leavenworth, and in the following April started for Fort S cott; Mr. Schuh participated in the Indian expedition sent out from the re under Gen. Blunt, which commenced actively with the engagement at Newto nia, Mo., where they opposed Gen. Price. On December7, 1862, the battle at Prairie Grove, Ark., was fought, and thence the reg iment went to Van Buren, Ark., finally entering winter quarters near Sprin gfield, Mo. In the following spring, under Gen. Heron, they went throu gh southern and southwestern Missouri, and after moving tovarious places went by rail to St. Louis, Mo., and were placed on provo st guard duty until August, when they were again sent to points in Arkansa s, Helena, Little Rock, Pine Bluff, etc. In the spring of 1864 they took p art in the Red River expedition under Gen. Steel, with the Seventh Army Co rps. On January 1, 1864, Mr. Schuh veteranized, at Little Rock, and remai ned in the service until January 21, 1866, when he received an honorable d ischarge at Little Rock, Ark., and returned to Milwaukee. During this lo ng term of service he never received a wound from the enemy, and was nev er in hospital, the only injury lie sustained being a kick from a hors e, in the early part of the war.On November 6, 1866, our subject was united in marriage, in Milwaukee, wi th Miss Maggie Gleisner, who was born January 20, 1850, in that city, daug hter of Michael Gleisner, who settled there at an early day. Mr. Schuh ha ving saved $1,000 during the war, after his marriage came to Freedom towns hip, Outagamie county, and invested in eighty acres of timber land lyi ng in Section 22, going in debt therefor to the amount of $800. He bui lt the first house and barn on the land, and began the tedious work of cle aring, living there until 1881, the year of his removal to Grand Chute tow nship. Here he bought eighty acres in Section 11, where he has ever sin ce resided, actively engaged in general farming. A comfortable residen ce and commodious barn are among the many improvements he has made upon t he place, which repays him well for all the labor he has put upon it, a nd which is necessary to conduct it property. In addition to general fa rm products he pays considerable attention to the raising of garden stuf f, and small fruits, and is also engaged in dairying to some extent. M r. Schuh is strictly a self-made man, for he has accumulated his fine prop erty solely by his own industry, and with the help of his estimable wife h as established a pleasant home.Mr. and Mrs. Schuh have had children as follows: Joseph, of Grand Chute; J acob, whose death, when he was twelve years old, was caused by a runaway t eam; John H., at home; Kate, Lizzie, George, Clara, Edward, Anton, Mary, M aggie, Charles, Leo and Rosa, all living at home.Politically a firm Republican, Mr. Schuh cast his vote for Abraham Lincol n, and always supports the ticket of his party in National elections, taki ng an active interest in its success. He has served as assessor and treas urer of Freedom township, acting in the latter capacity four years. In re ligious connection he and his wife are members of St. Joseph's Church at Appleton.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL'S CHURCH. 1838.
"The history of St. Vincent de Paul's Congregation begins about the year 1838. The members, at that time, were made up mainly of laborers engaged in the construction of the Wabash and Erie canal, through this section of the country. Previous to that time, the few Catholics at Logansport were attended by missionaries, who travelled up and down the Wabash Valley, in their missionary work.
In the year 1838, the Rev. John Claude Francois made the first effort to establish a permanent place of worship. He purchased five acres of land reserved to the children of Joseph Barrow, by a treaty with the Pottawottamies; later, making still other purchases, until a total of over twenty-three acres had been secured. On this land he erected a story-and-a-half pastoral residence. The congregation increasing rapidly, Father Francois found it necessary to secure better accommodations, and within a year erected a sufficiently large church, on Duret street, which supplied the needs of the congregation for several years, from 1842 to 1861.
In the year 1860, lots 151, 152, 153 and 154, in John Tipton's addition to the town of Logansport, fronting on Spencer street, were secured, together with pieces of ground between these lots and the Wabash and Erie canal. Upon this site, the present St. Vincent de Paul's Church was begun, by the laying of the cornerstone in 1860, and its completion and dedication in 1863. At this time, the Rev. George A. Hamilton was the pastor. The church is in the Gothic style of architecture. In the year 1888, Father Campion built an addition to the church, at a cost of $11,500. The twenty-three acres mentioned above, on which the original church was located, were sold during the pastorate of Father Hamilton. The interior of St. Vincent de Paul's Church is beautifully finished. The present pastor, Rev. P. J. Crosson, has made many improvements including the frescoing of the interior of the church, for $1,200; the placing of opulescent stained glass in the windows, for $2,000, a steam heating plant, for $2,400. The seating capacity of the church is 700. The church property has a debt on it of $6,200.
The parochial schools were taught by lay teachers, until the year 1865, when the Sisters of the Holy Cross took charge. As early as 1850, though for a short time only, school was taught in the old stone church on Canal street. From 1863, the second parochial school was opened in the Cullom building, on Second and Market streets, where the Sisters of the Holy Cross began to have charge. The present large, three-story brick school was erected in 1868, at a cost of $18,000. The study halls and class rooms are well furnished. The third story of the building is a large hall, giving ample room for school and other entertainments. This school possesses a bell of historical interest. It was purchased by Father de St. Palais, afterwards Bishop of Vincennes, on occasion of his visit to Paris, in 1845. It was cast under his special supervision, and was presented by him to St. Vincent de Paul's Church.
What is now Holy Angels' Academy, was formerly known as the Walker property, and was secured in the year 1871, for a consideration of $18,000. Many alterations were made in the building, to make it answer the purpose for which it is now used. The Sisters of the Holy Cross also reside in this building and from here attend the boys' school on the church grounds. A course of eight grades is given the boys and a full high school course the girls; although if desired the boys are also taught bookkeeping, typewriting and stenography. Ten Sisters have charge of 250 children.
The pastoral residence is a two-story brick building, adjacent to the church, on the east side. It was erected in the year 1879, during the pastorate of Father Walters, at a cost of $5,000. The small, frame house, which formerly stood here, was sold and removed to Thirteenth street. Additions to the house, with repairs and improvements, including a hot water plant, done since Father Crosson's advent, amount to $4,700.
The following is an authentic list of the pastors of St. Vincent's Church: Rev. John Claude Francois, from 1838 to 1841; Rev. August Mary Martin, from 1841 to 1844; Rev. Michael J. Clark, in 1844; Rev. Maurice de St. Palais, in 1845; Rev. Francis Fischer, from 1846 to 1848; Rev. P. Murphy, from 1848 to 1850; Rev. Patrick McDermott, in 1850; Rev. P. O'Connell, in 1852; REv. St. Vincent's is one of the irremovable rectorates of the diocese. It has 270 families, numbering 1215 souls.
This parish has the Sodality of the Living Rosary and the Children of Mary; The League of the Sacred Heart; The St. Vincent's Cadets and Total Abstinence Society, and the Catholic Benevolent Legion.
Three boys of this congregation have become priests, and twelve girls have entered religious communities.
The Church of the Immaculate Conception at Woodville, is visited from St. Vincent's Church on the last Sunday of each month. The members of this mission are pew-holders at St. Vincent's. The Rev. Francis A. King, residing in St. Joseph's Hospital, is the assistant pastor of St. Vincent's church."
