Notes:

Name was changed from Coenen as a result of Civil war error, he is the one who lost a finger in the civil war that he received a pension for. When they sent his check they misspelled his name to Coonen so he changed it to Coonen from there on. His brothers and sisters continued to use the Coenen version.

Biography:
MARTIN COONEN, who during a long, useful and eventful life has been intimately associated with the agricultural, public and professional interes ts of Outagamie county, is now the owner of sixty-three acres in section 3 3, Buchanan township, and is not only known as a pioneer farmer and veteri nary surgeon and as a publicspirited citizen who always has had the best i nterests of his community at heart, but is honored and respected as a vete ran of the great Civil War. Born December 22, 1840, in Zeeland, Holland, M r. Coonen is a son of James and Cornelia (Jacobs) Coonen, natives of Holla nd, where Jacob Coonen was the proprietor of a hotel and also owned a far m. In June, 1848, the family came to America, locating on a partly develop ed farm in Little Chute township, where Jacob- Coonen's death occurred abo ut 1855, when he was only fortyseven years of age. After his demise his wi dow took her family to Buchanan township, buying sixty-three acres of la nd where Martin Coonen now resides, and here her death occurred in 1882, w hen she was eighty-three years old, and her burial took place in. Buchan an Cemetery, her husband having been interred in Little Chute. The early d eath of Martin Coonen's father caused him to go to work at an early age, a nd he was not much past fourteen years old when he started to employ himse lf at whatever honest occupation presented itself. He continued thus, prin cipally at farming, until 1862, in which year he enlisted for service in t he Union army, becoming a member of Company F, Fiftieth Regiment, Wiscons in Volunteer Infantry, with which organization he served until the clo se of the war. His regiment, starting from Camp Randall, went to St. Lou is for ten days, went thence to Memphis, Tennessee, returned to St. Lou is and marched through Missouri, visiting Jefferson City, Kansas City, S t. Joseph and Waverly; proceeded to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, with the Thi rd Cavalry, and two months later were sent to protect the settlers from t he Indians, and it was while there that the war closed. The regiment, orig inally with Sherman's army, was detailed to scout duty, and shifted from o ne army to another.Mr. Coonen was finally mustered out in Madison, in June, 1866.After his return from the war, Mr. Coonen resumed farming operations on t he old homestead, where he was married November 19, 1866, to Miss Johan na C. Verstegen, who was born June 29; 1849, daughter of Arnold and Anna M ary (Beeman) Verstegen, natives of Holland, who were married in that count ry and came to America in 1850, settling in Little Chute on a farm. The mo ther died in 1862, aged forty-two years, and the father passed away in 190 0, at the age of eighty, and both are buried in Little Chute. They had a f amily of eleven children, of whom Mrs. Coonen was the fourth in order of b irth. Mr. and Mrs. Coonen have had eleven children: the eldest, Mary Cathe rine, married Michael Whiteman, and died February 23, 1890, aged twenty-t wo years, leaving one child; and is buried in Buchanan Cemetery; James L ., is married and living in Calumet county and has six children; George W ., also married and living in Calumet county, has four children; John A. d ied in infancy; Annie M. married J. Beelen of Buchanan township, and has f our children; Cornelia C., married Henry Van Abel of Kaukauna and has fi ve children: Arnold A., who was married and had four children, resid ed in Taylor county until his death, which was caused by accident Septemb er 7, 1910, and he is buried in Buchanan township; John E. is single a nd a teacher in the Green Bay High school; Christina married George Vander heiden and lives in Brown county and has three children; Franklin J. is ma rried, lives in Kaukauna and has one child; and Nellie J. is single and li ving at home.Mr. Coonen has all of his land in a high state of cultivation, fenced wi th barbed and woven wire, and carries on general farming and stock raisin g, markets dairy products and rents his land on shares to his neighbor s. He milks six cows and breeds high-grade Short Horn and Holstein cattl e. For the past forty years he has been engaged in the practice of veterin ary surgery, having been the first veterinary in this community, and his r eputation in this line extends over a wide district. He is a popular comra de of the Grand Army Post, and his fellow townsmen have evidenced their es teem of his upright character and official ability by electing him to vari ous township offices, including those of school director, member of the to wnship board and chairman of the township. Mr. Coonen has seen and taken p art in the various changes that have occurred in Buchanan township and h is reminiscences of early days are particularly interesting. His person al adventures have been thrilling, and have not been confined to servi ng in the army and fighting the Indians. On August 12, 1862, while saili ng between Sturgeon Bay and Green Bay, at eight o'clock a. m., the vess el on which Mr. Coonen and his companions were sailing foundered on the we st side of the bay, and Mir. Coonen swam to the other shore, saving not on ly his own life but also that of a companion, although it took him fifte en hours to complete the ten miles. Mr. Coonen's religious connection is w ith the Roman 'Catholic Church, and he attends services at the Holy Angels congregation at Darboy.

The following is an excerpt from an article written by Lester P. Coonen a nd published in the Kaukauna Times in June 1986.
In our very small town of Dundas, transportation was hardly taken for gran ted a half century ago. School and church were remote; both were in a neig hboring town. There were twelve children in our family, and a varie ty of transportation challenges. In retrospect, each of our vehicles wa s, in its own way a jewel.We had a Dolson, the first auto in our town, but we didn't use it on Sunda ys because of its threat to our business. (My dad and Uncle George) h ad a general merchandise and farm implement store.) Buggy horses wou ld be frightened and farmers were scornful of the puffing, smoking gadge t. In fact, some buggy- riding farmers refused to share the road if they w ere approached from the rear. The Dolson was our weekday, business car, d riven proudly by Uncle George.For a long time Frank was our sole Sunday transportation. Frank was our ho rse, our OAT-A-MOBILE. He endured up through my mid-teen years. Three gas hes in the fur of his right flank told of his bronco heritage. That roman tic ancestry, however, was not otherwise evident in his appearance. He lo oked old, decrepit and hangdog. Since he refused a checkrein, which wou ld have forced his head high and proud, he drooped his loose-lipped bla ck head and shaggy-maned neck very low, as though he were perpetually look ing for whatever he might find in the dust of a country road. A crackof t he whip was good for only a half-minute acceleration, after which he resum ed his lazy sleep-walking trot. A piece of paper on the roadside, howeve r, momentarily whisked along by the wind, would startle him and transfo rm him suddenly into a fiery western steed, dancing laterally, and snorti ng into high gear. But only very briefly.Bales of hay went into Frank - energy of a sort - and garden fertilizer ca me out. He was important, and he seemed to know it. That made him at on ce our friend and our enemy. Several times, when we needed his hoof-pow er to take us to church, the barn door was found open and, instead of Fran k, a blank. We would devise new guards for the stable door lock. It beca me a game of wits: horse against man. He would fit his aging teeth in to or behind the mechanism of the lock, open it and trot away. He wasn't m ean or spiteful in this I think just a lover of freedom, and grass.We sold buggies, and whips and blankets and harnesses in our implement bus iness.

1998 Coonen Family Newsletter; Dundas was the home of James and Patronel la Coonen. Mr. Coonen, known as Pa to nearly half of the Dundas residen ts was the Proprietor of the General Store. Jim sold groceries, feed f or your animals, coal for the furnace, clothing, and hardware. His fami ly of 7 boys and 5 girls were active in the area. The boys all partici¬pa ted in the business, acting as sales agents and roofing agents. In 195 3, as Pa was 84 years old, the store was sold at auction on July24th.To give you an idea of the size of the home place, the property in¬clud ed a 9 room flat upstairs, a 10 room house, a 24'x60' frame building, a 15 x15' frame garage, 15x60' coal shed, a 16x27' feed shed a 18x24' storage s hed and a 20x30' barn. All this was on a one acre of land at the side of t he railroad tracks. A truck scale was located at the back of the store. Y ou did not have any prob¬lem finding a beer in Dundas with a bar on eith er side of the Coonen General Store. Dundas is not a large populated plac e, but a small crossroads. Back in the early part of the century, its' pop ulation was primarily Coonen.

300 1/2 E 7th St Kaukauna Age 83, died Tuesday, March 18, 1986. She was born September 4, 1902 at Dundas to the late James and Nellie (Biese) Coonen. She had lived and worked in this area all of her life and retired from Riverview Health Care center in 1968. She is survived by six brothers and sisters-in-law: Edgar and Marge Coonen, Cincinatti; Lester and Virginia Fort Atkinson; Norbert and Bernice, Woodstock, Illinois; Jerome and Mary, Kaukauna; James and Jaqueline, Gallipolis, Ohio; Willard and Katherine, Brillion; three sisters and a brother in law: Mrs Grace LeFevre, Detroit; Germaine and Max Wittman, Brillion; Hildegard Thiel, St John; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Henry; and a sister Martha Van Asten. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mry Catholic Church, Kaukauna with Rev. Theodore Hendricks officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Hollandtown. Friends may call at the Greenwood Funeral Home from 4 until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday morning until the cortege leaves for the church. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The following is a document that was given to me at the reunion this summe r. It is interesting in that it provides a window into the world of li fe in the 1930's. I remind you that this was written just 30 days before Ma was killed in the auto accident on the way to church.
Dundas Wis. October 13, 1938
Dear Edgar & Marge, I suppose it is about time that I write. it seams it was something all the time since then. I am just about caught up wit sleep what I lose we were all down to Germaine's last weak all the Coonens to bad you folks weren't with us. We took guns and cow bells and dish pans along with us we made all the noise we could we took our eats along when we got there. Max was just going away, we stooped him and did we shiveree them. Martha said they had every else but that we all had a good time. His folks live up stairs, they came down, they didn't know what was going on. Aunt Nellie went along too. They have a nice place when it is all fixed up. They both seem to be happy. Norbert was home yesterday, he went to the homecoming St. Norbert's football game. I was gone to Milwaukee with Henry & Betty last week. Baker's bookkeeper is getting married next week. Grace had the first chance to work there when she told her boss she was going to work there he raised her wages so she stayed in Appleton. The boys are busy putting on roofs. They put a roof on a big barn last week, they are still at it and then they have a house yet then inspected, they will be true. W have a railroad car of coal coming next week, they have to deliver the most of that. I have the store to clean, yet we have an extra boarder at noon. Mary Verbaten is the bookkeeper at the canning factory now, Aunt Nellies's daughter. I had a letter from Lester a while ago, he seems to like it there. Cye (?) was there to see him, Norbert said it seemed lonesome at first when everybody was gone but now we have someone living upstairs and George stays here all the time and Mary comes for dinner. We are kept busy. Jimmie was gone hunting yesterday, he shot two squirrels. I expect Germaine home tomorrow, she wanted to know when we made up that surprise party we had on her. It would have been too bad if they we re gone. Last Sunday we were gone to Uncle Frank's with Hildegard and Fritz, the weather surly is nice out here. We haven't had any frost yet. It looks like rain now. Thanks for the check you sent us, it is too bad you aren't here now, we would have more time to visit. I feel better now, I was all in wh en you were here. They took Nell Fink to the hospital Friday, she was out of her mind, but they say she is better now. I suppose you folks were all tired out when you got home. Was Uncle Jo hn surprised to see you come and visit him? How are they getting along. I suppose Jerome will be leaving us some time when he gets a job out there, we can't blame him, he has to look out for himself too. Born Sept. 1, 1904 at home in Dundas Wisconsin, the fourth of thirteen children. One sister, I believe that her name was to be Agnes, was born about 1913 and lived just a few days.

Started to school on a part time basis at age 5. The school consisted of four rooms, with two grades taught in each room by an order of Catholic Nuns. The school was located in Hollandtown, about two and one half miles from Dundas. Seldom was any transportation available. The old school house at Hollandtown eventually had to be replaced. Pa decided to buy the old standing seam steel roof. Henry and I removed it. If you should drive thru Dundas now, I think that you would find that it is still in service on one of the old sheds. Most of the lime used in the laying of bricks and plastering in the new school was hauled from a limekiln, I think located in Brillion by myself.

A few words about going to school. In the winter when the snow was six inches deep or more, one's ankles usually got wet and the feet somewhat the same. The cold wet feet resulted in chilblains, the closest one can get to frostbite without frostbite. The method we used in the evening to combat the awful itching was to remove our shoes and socks and run around in the snow for a minute. The back of our legs just above the shoes became badly chapped and got a daily application of Vaseline. On cold days we wore a fascinator around the head to keep our faces warm. Boys would often turn their earflaps up to see who could take the cold the longest. This occasionally resulted in white ear lobes. Come springtime we were given a tonic of sulphur and molasses. This was made somewhat easier by one of the results. On the following night we would take off our stockings and shake them over a hot stove lid to watch the tine blue flames that would appear.

At about age ten, during the summer, work was available at the local canning factory, stacking tin cans whenever a carload arrived. Ten cents an hour was the wage rate. Tin cans at that time were a bit different than they are today. Each empty can had a lid on it with about a one-inch hold in the center. The cans were filled through this opening and a cap was soldered to them automatically, about a dozen at a time. The final operation was to solder a tiny hole in the center of the cap. One man using a soldering copper that hung in the air balanced by a spring did this. The man doing this operation was Fof Wolfinger. He was also the first man in Dundas to openly smoke a cigarette.

When the present type of can came into use, Joe Wolfinger, our next-door neighbor, invented a device to pick up about fifteen cans at a time. At least one of my brothers and I were employed to make this device.(Editors note. In summer of 1959, I worked at that same canning factory and used this device during the pea canning season). During the fall when corn was being canned, the job of husking corn was available at the rate of three cents a bushel. Since the only way into town was by train, a lookout was posted at each train arrival to check for a child labor inspector.

A little description of the town of Dundas might be in order. There was no cross road, just a main street. Dundas was on a spur line of the Chicago and North Western that ran from Manitowoc to Antigo. The railway had about a quarter mile siding that permitted one train to meet or pass another. In addition to that, it had a sidetrack that serviced the canning factory and grain elevator, plus a siding that serviced the Coonen facilities. A train did not have to stop to pick up mail, the pouch could be hung from a bar and the mail car had a device that could reach out and snatch it. There was one side road that lead to the depot, the elevator and canning factory.

The elevator was sort of special in that it had a fifty horsepower single cylinder gasoline engine for motive power with a unique way of being started. First the piston was brought to dead center, next a wooden match was attached to a plunger and screwed into the combustion chamber, this was followed by a priming charge of gasoline, and then air was pumped into the compression chamber. This completed the preparation. With a bar inserted into a hole in about an eight-foot flywheel, the piston was moved off of dead center, the pumped in air kept it moving until the operator took a hammer and struck the plunger with the match in it. It usually started and ejected a smoke ring out of the exhaust pip for a distance of a hundred feet.

The Coonen store was in the center of town. On it's west side the Dundas House, a saloon with several overnight rooms. On the east side of the Coonen lot lived Joe Wolfinger and next to his place was built a garage when automobiles came of age. On the other side of the street was a cheese factory next to the other saloon. This saloon had a dance floor on the second floor. A blacksmith shop was next to it. Across the street from the Dundas House was the Micke farm which was always the first in the area to have its crop planted in the spring.

In my early days I did occasionally assist the cheese maker in raking the curd and putting it into round metal boxes to be pressed.

Each of the saloons had an icehouse. These houses would be filled with ice packed in sawdust. The supply usually outlasted the summer.

The Coonen store sold farm machinery, coal, cement, shoes, harnesses, hardware and groceries. It purchased butter, eggs, furs and basswood bolts for shipment.

About 1918 electricity came to town. Previous to that we had gaslights, three in the store, one in our kitchen and one in the flat above the store. The gas was generated in a burner in the rear of the store. It required about a gallon of gasoline each night.

Kerosene was sold in the store. It was stored in an open farm tank located under a wooden window display platform. Many farmers brought in their cans to be filled with a potato pushed over the spout for a dap.

The Fateful Corner

Dundas and traveling east for about a mile, a north south road crossed the Dundas road. When about seven years old I sprained an ankle wrestling with Frank Micke at this corner. All the other kids continued home, but I couldn't walk so I stayed there until a farmer with horse and buggy coming from Dundas turned around and took me home. Pa hitched up Frank (our horse) and took me to the doctor at Kaukauna. This was my first look at X ray. With sparks jumping a foot between brass balls, it was quite a memorable experience. The end result was two months at home. That X ray machine was called a Morton-Holtz Influence Machine.

In the year 1938, Ma, Pa, Catherine and, I think, Grace with Jerome the driver, were returning from Mass on a snowy winter day in a Dodge sedan that had a partial fabric top.

The car was hit by another car at the intersection and it turned over. Ma was thrown partly through the fabric top and was crushed by the weight of the car. She died with but one gasp of breath. Pa was knocked unconscious and remained so for a month and then regained consciousness. The injuries to the others were minor in comparison.

On an earlier winter day about 1920, we had gone to Mass on a Sunday with the temperature at about zero. This time it was by a one-horse sleigh. I was the driver, Ma, Catherine, and Norbert the riders. While at Mass, a blizzard came up which wiped out all previous sleigh tracks. We left the Hollandtown road and turned toward Dundas at the fateful corner. The snow was so deep that the single tree on the sleigh broke. We abandoned the sleigh. I put Norbert on the horse and led it home. Ma and Catherine followed on foot. Each of us had some part of the body frozen. Ma was totally exhausted when she reached home.

About 1919, Lester and myself attended the Brown County Fair. The main attraction to us was a world war one biplane. It had tow open cockpits. The pilot sat in the rear. Lester and myself sat in the front cockpit in a space meant for one. We asked the pilot to do a loop. That he said would be another five dollars, which we didn't have. It was quite an experience for both of us.

I remember one little incident at home. Pa had purchased a lot of lamp chimneys that were hard to break. He delighted in accidentally knocking one off the counter and then selling it to the astonished customer.

One summer was spent hoeing a several acre patch of cabbage for Ross Beach. We also gardened a couple acres of railroad right of way.

When not busy at home I did work for farmers during silo filling time, mostly loading bundles of green corn onto wagons. Also followed the threshing machine, pitching bundles of grain from a how mow toward the thresher. Several winters were spent with a hay bailer. If the temperature was too low to start the tractor, it was towed into a wide open space and a fire was built under it to bring it to starting temperature. My job was called wiring, which meant poking wires through slots in a wooden block between bales of hay after someone on the opposite side pushed the wires back through the next block to tie the two ends together. Also had to call out the word BLOCK when the bale was long enough. The man feeding the press would then pull a lever that would insert the next block.

When the cheese factory at Hollandtown burned down, Pa contracted to pick up the milk from the farmers and haul it to the Kaukauna Club Dairy at Kaukauna. This meant getting up at five every morning and picking up the milk at each farm. I made a mistake one morning and dumped the fresh mild instead of the whey that I was returning to one farm. One advantage was, waiting at the cheese factory for one's turn to unload the milk, we would go to the bakery, get donuts, skim a bit of cream off the milk and have a second breakfast.

Another job taken on because of the truck was the hauling of about fifty yards of gravel for the construction of a beet dump. This was a facility for unloading farmers wagons by picking up the front of the wagon and letting the beets slide off into a large bucket which was then raised high enough into the air to let the beets slide off into a rail car.

During the early construction of this dump, a gin pole had been erected. After its erection, it was necessary to make a change at the top of the pole. The contractor had no one willing to do this. I volunteered for the task, was hired and helped construct this and a similar installation at Wrightstown.

One winter was then spent at Green Bay working in the sugar factory, a rather easy job, only twelve-hour nights. One of my first nights on the job I made my first contact with electricity. Using a crowbar to break loose sections of frozen beets, I made contact with the traveling cranes' 240-volt trolley. Quite shocking. We fed the beets into a sluiceway under the mountains of beets. Later my job was to scrape the sugar from centrifuges use to get out most of the liquid.

One of two winters was spent at the local canning factory, nailing together wooden boxes for the shipping of canned peas. Eventually this canning factory became obsolete, was sold and a more modern plant was built. After a few years I acquired the job of cook. With fourteen retorts in a circle and operating inside this circle it was a rather warm job. The process was to stack three crates of number ten cans on top of each other, close the cover and secure it with about a dozen large wing nuts. The temperature was gradually brought to 240 degrees at about 11 pounds of steam pressure. One this temperature was reached, it was maintained for 60 minutes. Then admitting cold water into the bottom of the retort did the cooling under pressure. If done too rapidly, the steam pressure would collapse with the resultant buckling of all cans. With all fourteen retorts in use at one time, this became a real job. Brother Lester worked in the warehouse and was responsible for the storage and cataloging of each day's pack.

During all of my working years at home all my paychecks were given to my dad. I became bold at one time and cashed one of my paychecks. I spent several dollars for a pongee shirt. Pa said "you might as well have thrown the money in the river".

After graduating from grade school at age thirteen, I was enrolled at Saint Norbert's for a high school education. After one semester I contacted the flu, was sent home and spent two months in bed. This was at the time of the great epidemic and for many it was fatal. Also World War I ended while I was at St Norbert. This was the end of my formal education until age twenty-two.

At about age twenty-one I purchased a car for the sum of seventy dollars. It had a racing body, no top, no windshield spotlights for headlights, and no fenders and could turn around on a road regardless of width. One day brother Norbert and myself had been to Kaukauna, on the way home we were each eating a bag of popcorn and traveling at about 45 miles per hour when a farmer, coming out of his driveway, drove directly into our path. I warned Norbert to hold onto his popcorn. We took to the ditch, went around a culvert and back onto the highway without slackening our speed or spilling any popcorn.

I spent much time with my Uncle George who was the working mechanic, while Pa was the business manager and salesman of the partnership of Coonen Brothers. After my dad purchased Uncle George's share of the business, the business became known as J. L. Coonen and Sons. Henry was called home to take over the mechanical duties. He worked at home until he got married. Being paid no wages and having worked a number of years a day of settlement was at hand. A rather severe blow to the solvency of J. L. Coonen and Sons.

At age 22 I had made up my mind to leave Dundas. I gave Dad the choice of lending me $1000 to go to Bliss Electrical School or I would join the navy. I was advanced the money and went to Bliss, graduated with honors and went to work for the Cincinnati Gas and Electric Company at the rate of 50 cents per hour.

All through my years at home I was plagued by a head problem, with trips once a week, first to the family doctor and then to a head specialist with no improvement. About 1922 a cousin of mine and I went to the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota. After an examination by Dr Rockwell, I asked for and received an appointment with Dr. Charles Mayo. That was the end of useless treatment. This condition was so bad that I did much of my breathing through my mouth. It has never entirely left me but did improve very much as the years went by.

Just a word or two about farm tractors. The first tractor sold was a Mogul, single cylinder with a planetary transmission. Next came the Titan, a two-cylinder job that operated on kerosene, with a water valve on the carburetor to adjust to prevent knocking. The first four cylinder one was an International; a 10-20 McCormick Deering followed this. Later developments produced diesel engines, power steering, enclosed cabs with air conditioning and hydraulic controls for the towed implements.

1998 Coonen Family Newsletter; Another War Storyby Jim CoonenThe date was Nov. 9, 1942, I received a notice that my request to join t he Merchant Marine Cadet Corp was approved. They ordered me to repo rt to 45 Broadway, New York City on Nov 11. Suddenly the whole world w as opening up to me. I had never been outside the state of Wisconsi n, In fact, I had never ridden in any kind of public transportation, inclu d¬ing buses, trains, taxis and of course subways and ferries. This had a ll changed by the 12th. I arrived a day late but was for¬tunate to be joi ned by three others who were also late. After reporting, we went by subwa y, train, and a bus to the acad¬emy at Kingspoint, LongIsland. I was assigned with 23 other cadets to a class for engineering trainin g. We were given a fast six weeks of preliminary training which was ju st enough time to give us all the immuni- zations known at the time. We we re supposedly protected and ready to go to sea. There were 4 of us Cadets assigned to the same ship, The Andrea F Lucken bach. Two of them were Deck Cadets who were to learn seamanship, anoth er Engine Cadet and myself. We joined the ship in Brooklyn. I think it w as at the 36th St. pier. The Luckenbach was a state of the art ship when she was built back in 1 918. She was a twin screw turbine driven ship. We were told that she w as the largest general cargo ship in the US Registry at the time she enter ed into service. When we came aboard she was in the process of finishing off the loadin g. They were still bringing in and loading 500 # bombs into the hold s. We found out later that some of the holds were full of 37mm anti-aircr aft ammo. We kiddingly said that on this trip we would have no need for l ife jackets. We figured we would be better off with harps.Now that the ship was ready to go, we went to Boston to join a convoy. Ru mors were that we were heading for Mur¬mansk, Russia, above the arctic cir cle. The Germans subs along the coast of Norway had sunk most of the shi ps that tried to make the trip. The US kept trying in spite of the heavy l osses. This was the only access to our ally, Russia. Fortu¬nately, wh en we arrived in Boston our rudder jammed. By the time we had it repaire d, we were too late for the convoy so we returned to New York to join an¬o ther convoy.Finally after losing almost a month, we left New York on Feb. 28,194 3. We thought we were fortunate because six months earlier, the German U- boats were lying in wait off the east coast and were sinking ships dail y. I believe it was either the air patrols or blimps that forced the U-boa ts that forced them out to sea. In any event, our convoy of about 30 shi ps headed out to sea without any problem. The North Atlantic in Ma rch is rough and cold, 20 foot waves are not uncommon. On the 6th or 7th d ay out, a storm with higher waves and white caps hit. The storm was seve re enough to destroy all our life rafts on the starboard side. Even wi th the heavy seas, the convoy was able to stay in formation. They may ha ve increased the spacing between the ships during rough weather they disco ntinued the routine zigzag course. The zigzagging was done to make the ships a harder target to hit. The e ntire convoy would continue to turn like flocks of starlings. They follow ed a pattern of going a given number of minutes in one direction and th en turning sharply. At night or if visibility was poor, the turns were acc ompanied by a blast by the ship's whistle to keep the turns synchronized.On March 10th, when we were about 2/3 across the Atlantic we were torpedoe d. It was about 6:30pm. One of the Deck Ca¬dets and I were in our state ro om. I was lying on my bunk with my shoes off. I was wearing a light kha ki jacket and a pair of khaki pants. Mine was a lower bunk so I had my li fe jacket lightly tied to the bunk above me. Two torpedoes hit us spac ed 5 to 10 seconds apart. They shook the ship but not as much as you wou ld expect. I guess this was because of the thousands of tons of mass a nd the damp¬ening effect of the water. The explosions were strong enou gh to break the ship in two. The stern sank almost immediately. There we re no survivors from the aft quarters.Our training told us not to save anything except yourself. You should gr ab you life jacket and head for your assigned emer¬gency station. Cade ts were to head for the open deck on the same level as our quarters and em bark a lifeboat as it was lowered past that level. By the time that I arri ved at my station, which was a matter of seconds, the two lifeboats were a lmost down to our level. As it went past our deck, 3 or 4 of us climbed i nto it. The two men who were lowering it did a good job of keeping it leve l. A common problem in the excitement is to allow one end to get ahe ad of the other and dump everyone out of the boat. There was no problem g etting the boat into the water and free from the ship in spite of 15-20 fo ot waves. In practically no time we had the lifeboat full of men that we h elped pull out of the water. As soon as possible, we started to row away f rom the ship. The suction of a sinking ship can pull the life boat down w ith it. About one fourth of the ship sank immediately, the remainder disa ppeared from sight six minutes after the torpedoes hit. We heard shouts f or help from the water where the ship had bee. The officer-in-charge to ld us not to row over there because it appeared that there were many peop le in the water. He was afraid that too many people would swamp the bo at that was already fully loaded. He soon determined that all the "head s" that he saw were not men but 500 pound bombs, so we rowed over and pick ed up the one guy that was shouting. We rowed aimlessly for about an ho ur and then saw a ship appear. Here again our training says no ship ev er stops in a convoy to help anyone because they are a good target for U-b oats in the area. This ship was an exception, it was an English ship abo ut half the size of ours. It had been in a shipyard in the States for exte n¬sive repairs. When the repairs were complete, they manned it with Engli sh sailors who were stranded because their ships had been sunk off the ea st coast. Some of them had lost as many as four ships trying to get ba ck to England. I think every one of them had been torpe¬doed at least onc e.We rowed over to the ship, they had hung a landing net over the side f or us to come aboard. A landing net is like a big spider web made of rop e. Due to the high waves, we could only grab the net and climb aboard wh en the lifeboat was on the apex of a wave. One of the men who misjudged w as crushed between the boat and the ship. On board the English ship we mil led around to see who had made it. We lost all of the Navy gunnery crew be cause they were berthed aft. In the final count we lost 24 of the total 7 5.There were no medical personnel aboard, so our ship steward shaved a gu ys head and sewed up a cut with a regular needle and thread. Rum was us ed as both anes¬thetic and to steady the hand of the stew¬ard. Rum was pas sed around to the survi¬vors. A couple of them got a "snoot full". I w as too afraid to take one drink.After a couple of hours we rejoined the convoy which did not give us a ve ry se¬cure feeling. The destroyer escorts (DE's) were still circling arou nd the convoy and dropping depth charges. Several more ships were sunk aft er we caught up with the convoy.The English were very sympathetic, pro¬viding articles of clothing to tho se of us who were in dire need. They felt sorry for me walking arou nd in my stocking feet. I suspect that very few of them had a spare of sh oes because they were all survivors. In any event, I doubt that anyone h ad a size 12EEE. This ship being a tanker, had some special gear aboar d. When it was necessary to enter a tank that had explo¬sives vapors th ey wore spark resistant covers over their shoes. These were leather wi th wooden pegs instead of nail in the soles. The design was like little gi rls patent leather shoes. Someone brought me a pair of them. Needle ss to say they were plenty wide and long enough. When I walked on dec k, it sounded like a Dutchman with wooden shoes. My bud¬dies would say wh en they heard me coming, "Here comes Coonen with his 'Jesus shoes'". Th ey figured I could walk on water with them.After five days we landed in Lockalsh, Scotland in the Gebrides. We were t old this was a submarine base. we were trans¬ported by a narrow guage rail road in very small coaches to Inverness. We stopped just long enough to e at at a fancy hotel. The waiters wore tuxes and we were given a clean pla te with each serving of food. We had 5 or 6 courses of plates but not mu ch food. Can you visualize 55 men with black sticky fuel oil smeared on t heir clothing in this fancy setting.We continued on to Glasgow. Here we received clean clothe. I got a pa ir of gray slacks with a label in them "Christian Science Monitor-Boston ", shirt, sweater and raincoat. I traded my "Jesus shoes" for a pair of wh ite tennis shoes. Back in those days, tennis shoes were only use for tenn is or to do roofing work. After a couple of days we proceeded to Liverpo ol for transportation home. Six of us were assigned to the Santa Catala n, a Grace line ship. We left Mar. 24, 1943 with a convoy for New Yor k. A convoy can only go as fast as the slowest and convoys lose a l ot of time zigzagging.We arrived five days before the convoy. This was good, at least we thoug ht it was.We landed in NY on Saturday and could not get ashore until Monday becau se we had no passports. On Monday I went to the Luchenbach office to get p aid off but I had to wait until the captain returned to be paid. As I rem ember, I had about $5. in my pocket. The Merchant Marine Cadet Corp w as no help except they did tell me that there was a stranded sailor's shel ¬ter on 13th street. Sure enough, for 50cents a night, they furnished a bu nk in a great big room. Fortunately, most of the bunks were empty so it w as fairly quiet. I did sleep with most of my clothes under my pill ow so I would have them in the morning. I only had to spend two nights the reI returned home to Wisconsin less than five months after leaving home f or the first time. I had seen the world and was returning home a her o. My first Sunday home I think I had to shake hands with everyone at chu rch. I told my story over and over again as people near me backed aw ay to let new ones get closer.After three weeks at home, I was eager to get back to the new world that w as discovering.

Willard (Bill) F. Coonen, age 88, formerly of Brillion, passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 at Samaritan Health Center in West Bend.
He was born July 24, 1923 to Petronella (Biese) and James L. Coonen of Dundas. He graduated from Kaukauna High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bill and the former Kathryn Kubale were married on April 18, 1953 in Reedsville.
Bill was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and saw extensive action in the European Theater. His combat decorations include the E.T.O. ribbon with a silver star and bronze arrowhead designating participation in five battle campaigns and the "D-Day" invasion in Normandy. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for service while a member of a forward observing team, and the Purple Heart for being wounded in the "Battle of the Bulge." He was a sergeant when discharged.
He was employed by the Farm Equipment Division of the Brillion Iron Works for over thirty-three years and was the General Sales Manager of the division from 1966 to the time of his retirement in 1986.
Bill was a member of the Brillion Lions Club, the American Legion Post No. 126 and a volunteer distributor for Meals on Wheels.
Bill was the youngest, and the last surviving of the 12 children of Nell and James Coonen. Survivors include his wife Katie (West Bend), his children Fr. Tim, OMI, of Ottawa, Canada, Carrie Plamann (Rolf Hagberg) of Duluth, MN, Paula (Jeff) Stadtmueller of Cottage Grove, WI, and Laura (Randy) Westerman of Slinger, WI; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jacqueline Coonen of Columbus OH, Larry and Dottie Kubale of Middleton, Bernard and Karen Kubale of Merton, Dorothy Reinke of Reedsville, and Frances Kubale of Green Bay; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Brillion with his son Fr. Tim officiating. Gathering will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the liturgy beginning at 11 a.m. A memorial fund has been established in Bill's memory. Biese, Mary (nee Coonen) of Kaukauna, age 96 years, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2007, at the St. Paul Home. Mary was born on April 23, 1910, in Jump River, Wisconsin, to the late Arnold and Anna (DeBruin) Coonen. Her father died when she was only six months old. When her mother Anna married John DeCoster, the family moved back to Kaukauna. On May 19, 1931, Mary married Aloysius Biese at St. Mary Church where she continued to be a lifelong and very active member of the parish. Together they farmed and raised a family. Mary loved to sew, peel potatoes, made excellent pie crust and peeled apples for many an apple pie. She was very proud of all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She taught many of them to sew, the girls learned to braid hair and many a grandchild learned the game of sheepshead and checkers from her. Mary volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul and St. Paul Home. In 2003, Mary received the life-time achievement award from the service organizations of Kaukauna.
Mary is survived by her nine children: Marvin (Pat) Biese, Wrightstown; Mark (Janet) Biese, Townsend; Marie (Charlie) Wall, Greenleaf; Gerald (Mary Beth) Biese, Eden Prairie, Minnesota; Carol (Mike) Hagens, Darboy; Joan Hagens, Laona; Jim (Bonnie) Biese, Greenleaf; Helen (Stan) Dercks, Kaukauna; Ann (Roger) Huss, Kaukauna; 39 grandchildren, 91 great grandchildren; and a sister: Delia (nee Decoster) Schumacher-Hauser, Appleton. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and step-father; her husband, Aloysius; a son, Arnold; a daughter, Jane Brautigan; a granddaughter, Mary Biese; great grandchildren: Gavin Hug and Rose Schroedl-Dercks, a son-in-law, Ralph Hagens; brothers: Ben (Rose) Coonen, George (Ruth) Coonen, Henry "Hank" (Ceil) Coonen, Albert (Agnes) DeCoster and Martin (Hattie) DeCoster; brothers-in-law: Bill Schumacher and Carl Hauser and her husband's family: Lena (Frank) Van Camp, Mary (Pete) Onkels, Pete (Ella) Biese, Frank (Clara) Biese, Elizabeth Biese and Henry (Catherine) Biese.
The funeral liturgy for Mary will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Jack Mullarkey officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 4-8 p.m. The rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Kaukauna Catholic School System Endowment Fund appreciated.

Sister Catherine Verbeten
Sister Catherine was honored on April 11, 2008, by the Volunteer Center of Racine County for her dedicated work with the Racine Dominican Senior Companion Program. She has been a volunteer visitor for homebound elderly and disabled people for the past 15 years.
When she retired from teaching and home care responsibilities in 1993, S. Catherine came to live at Siena Center, motherhouse of the Racine Dominicans. "She immediately became involved as a volunteer," noted Gloria Brown, director of the Senior Companion Program. "She is so conscientious - a wonderful role model for younger people who may think they're too old to volunteer anymore."
Every week S. Catherine visits people in the Senior Companion Program wherever they live - homes, apartments, assisted living or nursing home facilities. For many of them, she is the only person who takes time to talk with them. As one of her Seniors said, "She is one of the few contacts I have. She is someone who will listen and someone to talk to; I'm not so lonely anymore."
S. Catherine feels the greatest impact she has as a volunteer is "to be a friend and listener," giving her full attention to those she visits. And of course, she continually prays for them as well.
In one case, S. Catherine is the connector for three elderly family members, all of whom are disabled. They live in separate facilities and cannot keep in touch with one another directly. S. Catherine visits each regularly and passes news back and forth among the siblings.

Sister Catherine (Huberta) Verbeten, OP, was born in Combined Locks, and received a bachelor's degree from St. Norbert's College in DePere, and a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Verbeten served as an elementary school teacher and reading center coordinator in various schools around Michigan and Wisconsin. She continues active involvement in the Senior Companion Program, visiting homebound and nursing home residents. She lives at Siena Center.

Sister Catherine Verbeten, O.P., 102, passed away at Siena Center, Racine, WI on Sunday April 3, 2016.
Catherine Petronella was born July 12, 1913 to Martin and Nell (nee: Coonen) Verbeten in Combined Locks, WI. On August 1, 1932 she joined the Racine Dominicans and at her reception in 1933 she was given the religious name Sister Huberta. She professed her first vows in 1935 and her final vows in 1941. In 1968 she returned to using her baptismal name Catherine.
Sister Catherine spent many years in service to others in teaching. She began her ministry in 1932 at Assumption Grotto, Detroit, MI. In Racine she served at Holy Name, St. Rose, St. Mary and St. Patrick.
Other places in Wisconsin where she served were St. Bernard, Madison; St. John, Little Chute; Holy Name, Kimberly; St. Mary, Kenosha; and Holy Cross, Kaukauna. After she finished teaching at Holy Cross she served as a Senior Companion in Kaukauna. After moving to Siena Center in 1993 she continued her ministry in the Senior Companion Program.
Sister Catherine is survived by the Racine Dominican Sisters and Associates; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Robert, Gerald (Jeff) and infant Edward; and her sisters Dorothy Marolf, Mary Vanevenhoven and Grace Kugler.
Visitation will be in the Siena Center Chapel on Thursday April 7, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a Remembering Service at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery Hwy 32. Memorials to the Racine Dominican Mission Fund have been suggested.

She was very acti ve in her church, Holy Cross Catholic Church, where she participated in t he prayer chain and organized and managed the making of over 50,000 rosari es, which were sent to foreign countries, given to local prisons and to t he military. Mary was active as a prayer partner for children at Holy Cro ss preparing for First communion. She began the Hourly Devotion for vocati ons, which prayed for priest vocations. She also started Mission Sunday, w hich was an educational hour held on Sundays during Lent. She was extreme ly active in other facets and activities of her church and St. Mary Cathol ic Church, too numerous to mention. Mary was also a member of the Ladi es of the Knights of Columbus. Verbeten, Gerald F. "Jeff"
Jeff Verbeten, Kaukauna, died on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at the Appleton Medical Center. He was 86. Jeff was born in Kimberly on June 3, 1921, son of the late Martin and Nellie (Coenen) Verbeten. He graduated from the Kaukauna High School and from 1942 until 1945 was a member of the United States Army. His service to his country took him to Russia, Iraq, Germany, Egypt, and finally to England where he met and married Dorothy Simm on September 17, 1945. Upon his return to Kaukauna, he took over his father's business, Verbeten's Bar. In 1947, he built and added the bowling lanes. The business still operates today, under the supervision of their son, Jim. When Jim took over in 1976, Jeff "retired" and went to work on the Kaukauna Locks for the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Jeff enjoyed gardening, playing cards and politics.
Survivors include his wife: Dorothy Verbeten of Kaukauna; five children: Steve Verbeten of Appleton; Tom Verbeten of Kaukauna; Mary Kay (Leo Aerts) Verbeten of Kaukauna; Jim (Beth) Verbeten of Kaukauna and their daughters Caroline and Catherine; and Mike (Katie) Verbeten of Kaukauna and their sons Shawn and Kevin; two sisters: Sr. Catherine Verbeten of Racine and Grace Kugler of Appleton; a brother-in-law: Wilf Simm of England.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, a very special granddaughter Nikki in 1993, a brother Bob Verbeten; sisters Dorothy Marolf and Mary (Ed) Vanevenhoven; a brother-in-law Joe Kugler, and a sister-in-law Beryl Simm.
A memorial service for Jeff will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Tim Albrecht officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of the memorial service.

Kugler, Grace A. 91, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at Grand Horizons, Appleton. She was born on March 16, 1924 in Kimberly, WI to Marten and Nellie (Coonen) Verbeten. She married Joseph Kugler on August 13, 1945 at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Grace enjoyed life's simple pleasures, watching and feeding the birds, providing for her family, enjoying her grandkids and great-grandkids, and neighbors gathered around her kitchen table for coffee and home-baked treats. She enjoyed sheepshead and poker and summer afternoons and evenings spent on the front porch with family and friends. She was an Avon Lady for 43 years; member of Christian Mothers and sang in the adult choir for over 25 years at Sacred Heart Parish.
Our family fondly remembers Mom's delicious nightly home-cooked suppers; our Sunday stuffed chicken dinners and fresh picked produce from her backyard garden - real food prepared by a really good cook.

Obituary:
David Peter Coonen, age 87, founder of the pioneering Menasha Men's Club, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2016. David was born on February 23, 1929 in Kimberly, WI to Henry and Elizabeth (Blaha) Coonen. In 1937, Henry "Hammer Hank" moved the family along, with his gas station and auto repair business, to Menasha, WI. Dave grew up working in his father's garage during WWII when he stated, during one news interview, that "I must have fixed 50, 000 tires." In 1947 he graduated from St. Mary High School after which he enlisted in the military. He served four years in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Berlin airlift. He was also stationed in New York and Wyoming during his years of service. Although he loved to travel early on, in his later years he would only venture outside Menasha for his grandchildren (weddings and graduations) or food (restaurants).
After serving in the military, Dave returned to Menasha to join his father in working at the family business, Coonen's Complete Service. In October 1953 he married Nancy Johnson of Menasha, WI and over the next 10 years they had five children. Dave spent most of his time at "the shop" working hard first for his father, and then taking over ownership of the business with his brother Dan in the late 1960s. In the late 1990s, Dave passed down ownership of "The Shop" to his son John in a fashion fit for a small town family business as Dave told most people he was "fired." Since retiring wasn't an option, Dave did the next best thing, and took a job driving truck delivering parts for NAPA. In his new role he could keep an eye on the people and happenings of Menasha, and give everyone a hard time along the way. This job allowed him to keep several unofficial titles including historian of St. Mary's Central. His grandchildren were amazed at how he knew someone everywhere he went.
By far, Dave's favorite place to be was "The Shop" which has been, and continues to be, a fixture in the city of Menasha for almost eighty years and it was here, especially on Saturday mornings, where the brightest minds would gather to solve the world's most difficult problems. Soon, this group would be recognized as "The Menasha Men's Club". The friendships that Dave accumulated over these years were priceless to him, and he very much cherished those memories until the end. Dave was also extremely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren whom all loved him dearly and appreciated his "Old Man Coonen" sense of humor. Dave will be missed by many who knew him, although his legacy continues to live on as Coonen's Complete Service continues to be owned and operated by his youngest son Peter.

Donald H. Van Asten, 89, passed away on August 13, 2016 at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna after a long illness. Donald was born April 11, 1927 to John H. and Martha (Coonen) Van Asten at home in Vandenbroek, the fourth of 14 children. He served in the Korean War as a machine gunner in the Army and was a member of the American Legion. On July 7, 1953, he married Romunda K. Portmann at St. Mary Church in Stockbridge. Together they raised eight children on a dairy farm nearby. In his younger days he enjoyed square dancing while more recently he played the drums in the band at the nursing home.
Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years: Romunda K. (Portmann) Van Asten; his eight children: Barbara (Don Gosiewski) Van Asten, Sheila (Vincent) Galassi, David Van Asten, Mark (Karen) Van Asten, Jay (Debbie) Van Asten, Lyle Van Asten, Lisa Meier, and Jon Van Asten; his brothers: Ivo Van Asten, Leroy Van Asten, James Van Asten, and John E. Van Asten; his sisters: Grace Gebhardt, Sister Cyril Marie (nee Dorothy Van Asten), Betty Bast, Joyce (Phil) Bruecker, and Marcia (Ron) Siebers; 18 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents John H. and Martha Van Asten, his brothers: Gerald Van Asten, Cyril Van Asten and Kenneth Van Asten; and an infant sister Mary Van Asten.

Gerald Van Asten, age 81, of Kaukauna, passed away on Monday, November 1, 2011 at St. Paul Home after a long battle with Parkinson 's disease and cancer. He was born on November 3, 1929 in Kaukauna, the son of the late John H. and Martha (Coenen) Van Asten. On August 23, 1951 he married Mary J. Schuessler at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kaukauna. Gerald served four years in the U.S. Navy from December 1950 to December 1954. After an honorable discharge, Jerry and Mary owned and operated a dairy farm on Kavanaugh Road in Kaukauna for 35 years. After retirement they resided near their farm. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on August 23, 2011.
Jerry enjoyed wood crafting and many fix it jobs. He volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul, was a member of the Hollandtown Volunteer Fire Department for 41 years, Outagamie Farm Bureau, Jacob Coppus Post #258 American Legion, Little Chute and Holy Cross Parish, Kaukauna. His greatest joys were his family, his siblings, many friends and anything to do with farming.
He is survived by his loving wife: Mary Van Asten; two daughters: Sharon (Joe) Kapitany, New London and Diane Schmidt, Menasha; three sons: Steve Van Asten, Madison; Gary Van Asten, Florida and Randy (Mary) Van Asten, Greenville; five grandchildren: Ryan Van Asten; Daniel and Nicole Schmidt; Joshua and Aaron St. Louis. Gerald was preceded in death by two infant sons, Michael and Dale; an infant sister, Mary Van Asten; brother, Cyril Van Asten and Mary's parents, Michael and Marie Schuessler.
The funeral liturgy for Gerald will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 4, 2011 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna followed by full military honors. Father Tom Pomeroy will be officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Kaukauna. A visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 9:00 am until the time of mass. Kenneth I. Van Asten, age 68, passed away on February 9, 2012 after a brave struggle with cancer. Ken was born on August 10, 1943 to John and Martha (Coonen) Van Asten. Ken graduated from St. John High School, Little Chute in 1961. A man of many accomplishments, Ken was known to many as 'a simple man.' Serving in the U.S. Navy brought Ken to Jacksonville, FL. Shortly after his honorable discharge, he became a firefighter and rose to District Chief with the Jacksonville Fire Department, retiring in February, 2004. Ken was a successful businessman, owning and managing numerous properties. Ken was an avid collector of Jacksonville history. Surviving Ken is his beloved wife of 27 years, Anna Marie (Meyers) Van Asten; sons: Kevin (Cory), Keith (Melissa) and Kyle; step children: Tim Starling, Tamala Starling and Sharon (Martin) Nipper; and 13 grandchildren; brothers: Ivo (Nonie), Donald (Romunda), Leroy (Mary Therese), James (Bernice) and John (Jane); sisters: Grace Gebhart, Sister Cyril Marie Van Asten, Betty (Roy) Bast, Joyce (Phil) Bruecker, Marcy (Ron) Siebers; and sister-in-law, Mary Jane Van Asten. Michael B. Coonen, age 67 of Kaukauna, passed away on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at home. Mike was born September 8, 1945 in Appleton, Wisconsin, the son of Jerome and Mary (Beach) Coonen. Mike was married to Ellen O'Connor on March 20, 1971. They resided in Kaukauna. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and was a long-time employee of Fox Structures, Inc. of Kaukauna. Mike was always quick with a joke, and "never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Over the years, he had given out countless nicknames, enjoyed coaching Kaukauna Youth Baseball and always had cookies ready for the neighborhood kids. Mike was also a long time Wisconsin Badger fan and was glad to see Bucky at the Rose Bowl.
Mike is survived by his family: his wife Ellen of Kaukauna; a daughter: Wendy Coonen of Kaukauna; two sons: Timothy (Rachel) Coonen of Menasha and Jonathan Coonen of River Falls; and one granddaughter, Amrynn Coonen.
Mike is also survived by eight sisters and one brother: Jeanne (Warren) Bristol of Balsam Lake; Kay Cronin of Kaukauna; Nancy (W. Michael) Slattery of Maribel; Pat (Ed) Coonen-Korte of Shakopee MN; Beth Coonen of Kaukauna; Maria O'Meara of Randolph, Massachusetts; James (Maureen Quinlan) Coonen of Madison; Grace (Dave) Pable of Oshkosh; and Nora (Paul) Virnig of Neenah. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12:30 PM on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street in Kaukauna, with Fr. Thomas Pomeroy officiating. Interment will be at a later date at the parish cemetery. A visitation will be held from on Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of mass.

Peacefully and with great faith, Beep joined hands with her Father in heaven on Saturday, January 19, 2008. Beep was surrounded by the family she loved and blessed with her strength, courage and passion for life. A woman who lived to serve and touch people, Beep was thankful for the many, many family and friends who "were the puzzle pieces in the beautiful picture" of her life. One puzzle piece that will continue to blossom is her dream of Plum Hill, Cafe and Art.
Along with her husband Dave, they have four children: Kiara (Charles) West, Katie, Leah and Greg Klister. Family made her who she was; her parents Jerome and Mary Coonen, her brothers and sisters: Jeanne (Warren) Bristol, Kay (Jim) Cronin, Nancy (Michael) Slattery, Mike (Ellen) Coonen, Pat (Ed) Coonen-Korte, Beth Coonen, Maria (Bill) O'Meara, Jim (Maureen) Coonen, Grace (Dave) Coonen-Pable and Nora (Paul) Virnig. And the Klister family that loved her as daughter, sister and friend. Herbert H. Kilsdonk, age 81, of Little Chute, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 1, 2017. He was born on September 12, 1936, son of the late Wilbert and Catherine (Coonen) Kilsdonk. In 1958, Herbert married Catherine Lorenz, and she preceded him in death.
Herbert worked at Thilmany Paper Mill for over 40 years. He enjoyed going to the cottage in Door County, fishing and boating. Herbert spent countless hours in his garage where he could fix or build just about anything. He was a self-taught carpenter. Catherine and Herbert enjoyed traveling to Florida to spend the winters in the warm weather. They also were foster parents for the Outagamie County Adult Foster Care Program, through which they cared for Ralph Rothlesberger for many years.
Herbert is survived by his sons: Anthony (Char), Kevin (Linda) and Dennis (Jane) Kilsdonk; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Kilsdonk; grandchildren: Amanda (Kevin) Penta, Korey, Jason, Megan, Ethan, Logan, Heather, Jessica and Andie Kilsdonk and Sara Stark; siblings: Ann (Joe) Brochtrup, Joe, Richard (Donna), Ronald (Carol) and Marvin (Lila) Kilsdonk and Mary Ellen Brownell; a sister-in-law, Pat Lorenz; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Herbert was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; parents, Wilbert and Catherine; sons: Timothy and Daniel Kilsdonk; siblings: Jerome (Lola) Kilsdonk and Grace (Roger) Rhyner; brothers and sisters-in-law: Alyce Kilsdonk, Roy Brownell, Norbert, John, Fredrick and Charles (Darlene) Lorenz and Helene (Donald) Van Handel; and a foster son, Ralph Rothlesberger.
Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church, 323 S. Pine Street, Little Chute, with Fr. Ron Belitz officiating. Family and friends may call directly at the church on Thursday from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park.
