She was the daughter of the late Martin and Mary Berghu is Van Handel. Theresa married Norbert Techlin on August 25, 1945. They op erated Techlin's Trucking for 27 years. They also owned and operated Techl in's Bar for 25 years. She was a member of St. Nicholas Church. She has be en with Christian Mothers since 1946. Theresa enjoyed traveling, playing c ards and dancing, but most of all she enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Besides her husband, survivors include her children: Mary (James) Gonnerin g, Kaukauna; Luanne (Dennis) Kerkhoff, Florida; Donna (Michael) Lieberge n, Freedom; Darlene (David) Goltz, Chesterfield, Missouri; grandchildre n: Tammy, James Jr. (Dawn), Jason (Kim) Gonnering, Kasey (Randy) De Cleen e, Katie (Jeff) Deegan, Jill (Nick) Cropsey, Crystal Liebergen, Deirdre a nd Derek Goltz; great-grandchildren: John, William and Cody Urban, Courtne y, Christopher and Caylee De Cleene, Eric and Brent Gonnering and Meghan G onnering.     James R. Van Handel was greeted by his Heavenly Father after his unexpected death on Friday April 8, 2016 at his residence in Freedom, WI.
    Jim was born in Appleton, WI on February 17, 1948 to Robert J. and Marion (Van Dehy) Van Handel. He graduated from Xavier High School in 1966. Jim served in the Army National Guard from 1967 to 1973. He pursued a career in plumbing working with Thomas N. Hardy Plumbing and Heating as well as Local 400 Plumbers and Steamfitters. In 1976 Jim started his own plumbing business called James R. Van Handel Plumbing and Heating. He returned to Local 400 in 1992 until his retirement in 2006.
    Jim married his neighborhood girlfriend Judy Van Groll on September 11, 1971 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church where they remained members and raised their family. Jim spent many years playing softball and bowling. He looked forward to going to his northern retreat at the cottage in Townsend to spend time with family and friends. There he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also enjoyed watching his beloved Packers, Brewers, Badger Basketball and Football as well as NASCAR and "Gold Rush".
    Jim is survived by his wife, Judy; his children, Cindy (Michael) Techlin, Kevin Van Handel, and Kris (Scott) Hebbring; 4 grandchildren, William and Eric Techlin; Natalie and Emma Hebbring; a brother, Ronald Van Handel; two sisters, Laura (John) Bender, and Barbara (Joseph) Wenninger; his sister-in-law, Mary (Dale) Rohm; his brother-in-law, Martin (Charlene) Van Groll; his sister-in-law, Monica Hanagan and her special friend Jim; and numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
    Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Martha (Joosten) Van Groll; and brother-in-law, Guy Hanagan.
    Mass of Christian Burial for Jim will be held, Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at 11 AM at ST. THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1810 N. McDonald St., Appleton, WI. Fr. Gerald Falk celebrant. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Wichmann-Fargo Funeral Home at 537 N. Superior St., Appleton, from 4 PM to 7 PM with a vigil at 7 PM AND Wednesday, April 13, at the CHURCH, from 10 AM until time of Mass. Private interment will be at St. John Cemetery, Little Chute.
    n honor of Jim's service in the Army National Guard, there will be full Military Honors presented after the Mass by the Freedom VFW Post 7692.
    Jim's family thanks the Freedom Police Department and First Responders for their understanding and compassion in trying to help our loved one, Jim.
    Special thank you to Amy Jo of the Fox
    Cities Victim Crisis Response Team for being there to console Jim's family. A memorial fund will be established in Jim's name.

    Obituary:
    Appleton - Ken Van Handel, age 64 of Appleton, passed away peacefully at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Appleton on August 6, 2018, following a three-year struggle with pancreatic cancer. Ken was born in Appleton on March 2, 1954, son of the late Donald Van Handel and Joan (Witt) Van Handel who survives. He was a graduate of Appleton East High School, and on October 7, 1977 married his sweetheart, LuAnn Stern. Their marriage was blessed by four children, twin daughters, and then twin sons, something of which Ken was very proud.
    As a young man, Ken took auto body courses at FVTC which supported his hobby of auto body repair. He also enjoyed motorcycling and snowmobiling with friends and cousins. Ken started his career as a truck driver and worked his way through all aspects of the family business. He was Vice President of Van Handel Excavating when he retired in 2015. Ken was an avid conversationalist. He could carry on hour-long conversations with anyone. His sense of humor, which he passed on to his children, made him so enjoyable to be around. Ken's favorite place was the family cottage in Townsend. Here he could roam the woods, hunt, boat, drive scooters and his four-wheeler for hours on end. For Ken, there was always a project to complete, and he never lacked ambition. In his later years, the projects included woodworking. He designed and built bird houses, bird feeders, squirrel feeders, and Adirondack chairs. Ken was proud to have been a Town of Center Supervisor for twenty years, and was currently on the Town of Center Planning Committee. In addition, Ken was actively involved with the Pickerel Chain Lake Association from its inception.
    Ken is survived by his sweetie of forty years: Lu Van Handel; his mother: Joan Van Handel; daughters: Kris (Jared Wildenradt) Van Handel and Carol (Terry Daines) Van Handel; sons: Andy Van Handel and Jeff Van Handel; a grandson: Conner Van Handel and his mother Anna Gerhardt; six siblings: Dennis (Pat) Van Handel, Kathy (Roger) Watters, Margaret (Al Haass) Thorpe - Haass, Doug (Karie) Van Handel, Mary Van Handel, and Mark Van Handel; a sister-in-law: Cheri (Mark) Saltzman; and two brothers-in-law: Dave (Tracy) Stern and Don Buechel. There are also many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends.
    Ken was preceded in death by his father: Donald Van Handel; Lu's parents: Orvil and Lois Stern; a sister-in-law: Sandy Buechel; and a brother-in-law: Doug Thorpe.
    The funeral service for Ken will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 13, 2018 at ST. JAMES UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 100 W. Capitol Drive in Appleton. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street in Appleton on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM and again at the church on Monday morning from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
    The family would like to thank the ThedaCare Cancer Center and their wonderful staff for their years of care and support. Another thanks to everyone on the 8th floor at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center, especially RN Gary for his exceptional care.

    Hietpas, Nick M., FreedomNick Michael Hietpas, born February 23, 1985 in Appleton, WI to Bruce a nd Diane (Van Handel) Hietpas died as the result of an automobile acciden t. Nick attended Freedom schools graduating from Freedom High School in sp ring of 2003. Nick worked for his father at Hietpas Welding as a certifi ed welder in Appleton and was currently attending Fox Valley Tech in the i ndustrial welding technician program.Nick earned a trip to the National Skills USA - VICA competition in Kans as City, Missouri in June after winning a gold medal at the state competit ion held in Madison on April 24th. Students who win a gold medal at sta te and advance to the national competition are among the top 2% in the nat ion. Nick was one of the 43 high school students to compete in the conte st that included metalworking, welding frame analysis, refinishing, estima ting, plastic repair, and a written test. He earned a Bronze Medal (3rd) a nd became the first national medalist for Wisconsin in the collision repa ir technology contest and the first national medalist for Freedom Skills U SA advisor, Bob Abitz. In addition to the bronze medal, Nick was also awar ded a toolbox, paint gun, Miller welding helmet, and a trip to the Mart in Senour Paint School, and a full scholarship to Wyotech College, Larami e, Wyoming which he was to attend in the spring of 2004. He was involved w ith the Freedom Chapter of Beat the Heat, and a member of the high scho ol football team throughout his high school years.Nick had a great love for hunting, snowmobiling, jeeping, dirt biking, a nd riding horses. He had a great love for his family and his numerous frie nds.
