    Regiment History:Forty-ninth Infantry WISCONSIN (1 YEAR)
    Forty-ninth Infantry. -- Col., Samuel Fallows, Lieut.-Col., Edward Coleman, Maj., D. K. Noyes.
    This regiment was organized at Camp Randall, Madison, and left the state March 8, 1865. It reached Benton barracks, St.Louis, two days later, and was ordered to Rolla, Mo., for guard and garrison duty.
    Co. K was placed at Fort Wyman, I at Fort Detty and B was sent 10 miles east of St. James. Co. A was stationed at Waynesville in June, D at Big and Little Piney. In July Co. H was sent to St. Louis for provost duty, and Cos. D and E to Benton barracks as. permanent guard.
    Col. Fallows was placed in command of the post at Rolla in March, and later of the 3rd sub-district of Missouri. Maj. Noyes was detailed on general court-martial at St. Louis, Lieut.-Col. Coleman taking command of the regiment and giving it a name for discipline which elicited high commendations from the department commander.
    The regiment was ordered to St. Louis Aug. 17, for prison guard duty, Col. Fallows being placed in command of the post there and of the first sub-district of Missouri. Cos. B. C, and D were mustered out Nov. 1, and the remainder on Nov. 8.Col. Fallows was brevetted brigadier-general, Lieut.-Col. Coleman became colonel, Maj. Noyes, lieutenant-colonel and Capt. Cheney was brevetted mayor.
    The original strength of the: regiment was 986. Gain by recruits, 16; total, 1,002. Loss by death, 48; desertion, 6; discharge, 173; mustered out, 775.

    The Dale Recorder, June 1, 1906, Page 1, Col. 3: "Death of Lyman Otis - Responds to the Last Roll Call Last Friday Afternoon
    "On Friday afternoon last at about 2 o'clock, Lyman Otis, an old soldier, and one of the oldest settlers of Dale, breathed his last after suffering about two weeks from dropsey.
    "OBITUARY - The family of Enos and Almira Fuller Otis consisted of eight boys and two girls. Lyman was born near Rome, N.Y., June 2, 1831. In 1838 they moved to Jefferson county, of the same state. On June 8, 1846, Lyman, Marshall, Emily and Hannah, accompanied their father Enos and step-mother Susan Vaughn, taking passage on a boat at Sackett's Harbor, N.Y., for Milwaukee, Wisconsin territory, where they arrived thirteen days later; from which place they moved to Eagle, Waukesha county, thence to Outagamie, where Lyman has practically made his home since. Lyman Otis was 74 years, 11 months and 23 days of age. Lyman Otis and Sarah Davis were married October 13, 1855, there being seven children, of which five survive. Mrs. Sarah, wife of Lyman Otis, having died February 18, 1879. Lyman Otis was an old soldier, being a member of the G. A. R., having enlisted in 1865 and served to the close of the war.
    "The funeral, under the management of undertaker W. Heuer, was held on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with services at 2:30 at the Baptist church, the Rev. Kaiser, of Allenville, officiating. Interment took place at Pine Grove cemetery.
    "The following acted as pall bearers: O. G. Prentice, Henry Opperman, Lawrence Linton, William Herning, Wm. Vaughn, and Gotfried Reinert.
    "The following relatives and friends from abroad were present; Milton Otis, Hogarty; John O. Clubertson, A. J. Pardee, Appleton; Henry Culbertson, Greenville; Guy Hutchison, Mr. Hehman and wife, Sugar Bush; Enoch and Ida Otis, Embarass; J. G. Otis, Delhart, Texas; P. Griswold and wife, Clintonville, C. K. Griswold and wife, Tigertown."

    Lyman married Davis, Sarah 13 Oct 1855. Sarah was born Abt 1835, , , , Wales; died 18 Feb 1879. [Group Sheet]

    The Dale Recorder, Sept. 15, 1905, Page 1: "DEATH OF GEO. W. OTIS. - After a Brief But Painful Illness He passes Away at His Home in Dale -- On Saturday morning last, at about 2 o'clock George W. Otis, a well known resident of this place, breathed his last, after a brief illness, death being caused by a severe attack of diabetes, at the age of 48 years, 7 months and 21 days. The deceased had also been suffering for some time previous to his death from an extraordinary large carbuncle at the back of the neck.
    "George W. Otis was born at Fox Lake, Wis., January 18, 1857, came to Dale with his parents in January, 1860, was married to Miss Alice Lieby of Dale, on December 25, 1879, Mrs. Otis dying eight years ago. The deceased leaves behind to mourn his loss, four boys and three girls, Frank, of Fond du Lac, Enoch, Steve and Raymond, of Dale, Mrs. Henry Henan, of Sugar Bush, Ida and Elenor, of Dale, his father, Lyman Otis, three brothers and two sisters, as follows: W. E. Otis, of Dale, John G. Otis, of Delhart, Texas, and Joseph L. Otis, of San Antonio, Texas, Mrs. C. K. Griswold, of Whitcomb, Wis., and Mrs. Roy Newton, of Tacoma, Wash. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, from the residence the cortege headed by an escort of members of the M. W. A., of Dale, of which camp deceased was a member, proceeded to the Baptist church, where services were conducted by the Rev. H. Miller, of Hortonville. The church was taxed to its utmost capacity, so much so that many were unable to gain admission. A short but most appropriate eulogy was delivered, and the choir rendered three suitable selections, Miss Lulu Blue presiding at the organ. After the services the remains were taken to Pine Grove cemetery followed by a procession of about fifty rigs. Those who acted as pall bearers were: Henry Opperman, Theo. Witt, B. Nelson, Sam Cannon, Grant Hopkins and William Penfield.
    "Those present from abroad were Mrs. Guy Hutchinson, Sugar Bush; William Nicewander and wife, Whitcomb, Marshall Otis and wife of Hogarty, Mrs. A. L. Pardee and J. Culbertson and wife of Appleton; E. Wilson, of Oshkosh; George Leiby and wife, John Freiberger and wife, Ernest Heuer and wife, all of New London; Mrs. P. Kundiger, of Readfield; Mrs. Chas. Landin, of Dorchester; H.M. Culbertson and wife, Mrs. H. Foth, of Medina; Dan Zehner, of Clayton; Miss Emma Opperman, of Macmillian; Mrs. Anna Dietz, of Neenah; Eva Pleckham, of Marshfdield; Mrs. Abbie Leiby, and Nellie DeLong, of Waupaca, Mrs. G. Moore, Kansas, and Mrs. Keckler and daughter, of Neenah."
