    Michael S. Philippi, Baltimore, MD, age 58, passed away unexpected on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, in Chicago. He was born on October 19, 1951, in Appleton, Wisconsin, son of Margaret and the late Kenneth Philippi Sr. Michael grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, and early in life began his lifelong career in theater as a lighting and set designer at James Madison Junior High School. Michael attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the Evans Scholar Program. He continued to pursue his career in theater and became well known and respected for his work at many theaters including the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and the Manhattan Theatre Club.
    Michael's lifelong love for theater was only surpassed by his love for his wife, Miriam Hack, and their daughter Megan, whom he is survived by. Michael is also survived by his mother, Margaret Philippi, Appleton; three brothers: Jack (Deb) Philippi, Stoughton, Wisconsin; Steve (Lisa) Philippi, Scandia, Minnesota; Ken (Laurie) Philippi Jr., Iola, Wisconsin; two sisters: Gail (Steve) Rench, New Jersey and Jill (Bill) Krueger, Menasha.
    There are also many nieces and nephews. Michael was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Philippi Sr.
    A memorial service for Michael will be 1 p.m. Monday, November 9, 2009, at James W. Perry Hall, at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley, Communications Art Center, 1478 Midway Rd., Menasha. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Michael Philippi Family Health Care Fund, c/o Lynne Durbin, 307 West Wind Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21204.
