    Biography:
Dina, Minnie And Anna GEENEN. One of the most successful business establishments operated and owned by women in the United States is that of the Misses D. M. and A. Geenen, who are conducting a large retail dry goods business in Appleton, Wisconsin. This business was established in 1896 by the Misses Geenan, in company with Mr. Koch and William Smith, both of whose interests have been purchased by the ladies, who now carry on the business by themselves. The business first started in the old Morey building, but as the venture proved successful and steadily grew, more space was needed, and the operations now cover three store buildings, each 22x135 feet. A complete line of dry goods is carried, and the proprietresses have proved that they are not only capable in a business way, but that they can introduce new features into their business, learning the public's wishes and cultivating its tastes for new innovations. The Misses Geenen are the daughters of John Geenen, who came to the United States in 1856. He resided in the State of Illinois for about two years and then located with his brother-in-law, Mr. Evert Sanders, on the Fox River, at the present site of South Kaukauna, where they took up wild land and brought it under cultivation. John Geenen had a family of eight children, of whom three are deceased, the survivors being: Mrs. Wm. Brill, living on a farm in Buchanan township; William, a florist at Kimberly; and Dina, Minnie and Anna, of Appleton. Evert Sanders was born in Holland in 1819, and died in October, 1903. He came to the United States in 1858 and located with John Geenen on the Fox River. He married Henrietta Geenen, a sister of John Geenen, and they had no children. He was a prominent figure in politics during his day, being town clerk and justice of the peace for many years.

    Br. William J. Geenen CSC, April 28, 1930 - May 14, 2011
NOTRE DAME - Brother William Joseph Geenen, C.S.C., 81, died on May 14, 2011, at Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, FL. He was born in Appleton, WI, the youngest of seven children of William E. and Rose (Catlin) Geenen. He attended St. Joseph Elementary School and Appleton Senior High School. In 1946 he went to Sacred Heart Juniorate in Watertown, WI, where he completed his high school studies and joined the Brothers of Holy Cross. He began his novitiate year at Rolling Prairie, IN, in February 1948, pronouncing his first vows on February 2, 1949. He then started his college studies at St. Edward's University in Austin, TX. In the fall of 1951 he taught at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, OH, for a year and then returned to Austin to both teach at St. Edward's High School and complete university courses, earning a bachelor's degree in 1953. That summer he was assigned to join the faculty at Gilmour Academy, Gates Mills, OH, where he spent the next 20 years as a teacher, counselor and administrator. He taught English writing and literature for three years and then was appointed principal for the next 12 years until 1968. He managed to earn a master's degree by attending summer sessions at Loyola University in Chicago. He then became Gilmour's Director of Admissions for five years and engaged in fundraising until 1973. While on a recruiting trip, an event occurred which markedly changed his mission and ministry for the rest of his life. In early 1973, Br. William was in Florida visiting a man who was in intensive care in a Sarasota hospital. He was dying but was worried about his wife after he died; she had no family. William had to leave to drive to Tampa for a meeting but got in the wrong lane and pulled into a vacant lot to study the map. An elderly man came up to his car and said he lost his wife, was in poor health and was lonely. At the time there wasn't much William could do. He didn't forget these encounters when he returned to Gilmour. After months of reflection, he spoke to his provincial, Brother Charles Krupp, about a plan to move to Sarasota, develop centers and respond to the loneliness and isolation of aging adults. Br. Charles gave him permission to develop this new ministry. Br. William arrived in Sarasota with his vision and recruited his first volunteer. He had a total of $79 in his checkbook. A name was needed for the ministry. Some suggested 'Senior Friendship Center," but Br. William said it must be plural, '"Centers," that could spread to other communities. Weeks later, they opened a little house and borrowed tables and chairs from a church to serve lunch, expecting a few people. More than 400 showed up. Volunteers increased, funds were found, and Senior Friendship Centers was born. "People Helping People" became their motto. Their mission was to correct the isolation and loneliness which Br. William called the "malnutrition of the elderly." He drew inspiration from the example of Brother Andre Bessette who had a strong devotion to St. Joseph and developed a small chapel into a massive Oratory. Br. William prayed to Br. Andre' "to help him do something for others" when he either needed support to get the Friendship Centers started or new projects. He possessed an ability to draw out others' talents. He could see what people needed and find resources. A friend said, "Br. William can present his case in speaking to people who have means, and they open their pocketbooks." The Senior Friendship Centers, Inc.. are a private, non-profit, non-denominational corporation which deliver a wide variety of services. They received national attention when Charles Kuralt did a special feature on his CBS "On the Road" series. Presently there are (at least) Senior Friendship Centers' programs in five Florida counties including 24 dining sites, six neighborhood activities sites, four adult day-care facilities, and five medical clinics that serve more than 15,000 seniors. In 1994 Br. William participated in the Midwest Provincial Chapter where he was elected the new provincial. One said that William was elected because he accomplishes things and inspires people. He took over the responsibilities of overseeing the Brothers and their ministries and turned over his reins as the founder/director of the Centers to Br. Charles Krupp. One idea that he began to pursue was to develop Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame for laypeople and Brothers as a multi-generational community with medical care and retirement opportunities. Villas and apartments were constructed. The project grew. When Br. William's six-year term of provincial leadership ended in 2000, he returned to his beloved Senior Friendship Centers to resume activities. A newspaper article said, "The 'Energized Angel' has returned." He began work on another project, the Center for Healthy Aging, which today is a 13,000 sq.ft. building with more than 300 volunteers who deliver health care and programs for seniors on limited incomes. Three years ago, the Brother William Geenen Founders Fund was established to ensure the future of the Senior Friendship Centers. Br. William had already received more than 20 awards and honors including Brotherhood Award from the Salvation Army, Life Membership with the Knights of Columbus, Outstanding Humanitarian for 2008, Citizen of the Year in 1987, Bicentennial Patriot Award in 1976 ... and in 1994 the street leading to the original Friendship Center was renamed "Brother Geenen Way." One close friend was quoted in an article saying: "Br. William is just a honest, compassionate, good man who has a vision and makes things happen. We sure were fortunate that he came to our community." His wrong turn in trying to find Tampa many years ago became a "right turn" that has made thousands of people's lives healthier and happier, both in Florida and Indiana. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 20th, in St. Joseph's Chapel from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on the grounds of Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame. The Mass of Resurrection will then follow with interment afterward at St. Joseph's Cemetery of the Village. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Memorial contributions, in honor of Brother William Geenen, C.S.C., to support the mission and ministries of the Brothers may be sent to Brothers of Holy Cross, Office of Development, P.O. Box 460, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

    Obituary:
Geenen, Sister Mary James (Alice Margaret Mary)
Sister Mary James (Alice Margaret Mary) Geenen entered Eternal Life February 20, 2012, the third child of Henry R. Geenen and Gladys Catherine (McCormick) Geenen. She was born March 31, 1919 in Freedom. She attended Saint Nicholas Elementary School. After graduating from high school she attended Saint Norbert College and Silver Lake College where she earned a BA Degree in Elementary Education with majors in Philosophy and English. She attended the University of Dayton earning a MS Degree in Elementary Education.
Sister Mary James took religious vows on August 15, 1946 with the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, Manitowoc. She changed her community affiliation to the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady on December 8, 1981. Sister celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Religious on August 15, 1996.
Sister Mary James served as a teacher in the Diocese of Green Bay at: Sacred Heart, Oshkosh; Saint Mary, Algoma; Saint Wendell, Cleveland; Saint Anthony, Neopit; Saint Aloysius, Kaukauna; Saint Paul, Manitowoc; Saint Mary, Kaukauna; Chilton Catholic, Chilton; Saint John, Seymour: In the Diocese of Superior; Saint Joseph, Rice Lake. In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee: Saint Mary, Waukesha; Holy Spirit, Milwaukee. In the Diocese of Steubenville: Ohio; Saint Nicholas, Zanesville: In Michigan: Saint Anne, Menominee.
Throughout her teaching career, Sister Mary James continued her education, earning credits from the University of Wisconsin, Manitowoc, and the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh; the University of Dayton, Ohio. Sister held the following licenses: Elementary Teacher K-8 from the State of Wisconsin and from the State of Ohio-Elementary Teacher K-8, Supervisor and Administrator. During her teaching career she continued to maintain Advanced Certification in Religious Education from the Diocese of Green Bay and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
Sister Mary James served the Church for 47 years as a dynamic, energetic and dedicated teacher. As a philosophy of education, she believed that "Education should be positive, learning should be exciting, challenging and fun. Every child should be successful and be at ease in the classroom." She involved every student in her class and spent countless hours tutoring students who were in need of help. No sacrifice was too great, no effort too much when Sister Mary James perceived a child in need of help. A smile, a nod, a word of encouragement and time for individual tutoring, sometimes a minute or two and frequently after school for a longer period.
She recognized special talents in the poor and made every effort to have their giftedness recognized by others - in musicals and plays. She encouraged all her students to use their talents to the best of their ability. Her students were motivated to be service oriented. They visited hospitals, homes for the elderly and retirement homes always taking with them some small gift/card which they had made for the patients/residents. They entertained with song and dance on these occasions bringing great joy to the sick and elderly. Sister was a teacher in Religious Education Classes on Saturday or Sunday mornings; during the week after school or in the evening and during the summer at rural parishes in Wisconsin and Ohio preparing children and young people for the Sacraments of First Eucharist, Reconciliation and Confirmation.
At the University of Dayton Sister Mary James was selected from a class of 53 students, and was encouraged to pursue a career of teaching on television as a "Master Teacher". Her practicum Project for the Masters Degree was entitled, "The Use of Community Resources", which opened up a year of educational activities for 40 sixth grade students. The students were exposed to such subjects as history, economics, law, sociology, psychology, law enforcement, fine arts, music and agriculture. The program included views of life, culture and habits of people in Russia, Mexico, Greenland and Peru as seen through the eyes of people who had lived there.
Sister Mary James was involved as an organizer/teacher in summer school workshops in reading, spelling and math for remedial and advanced students; art seminar; and summer Religious Education Programs. She taught in a College Reading Clinic; prepared students and directed them in Diocesan Music Festivals; maintained membership in a College Chorus for eight years; directed programs of entertainment at schools; trained altar servers and held regular meetings of high school and grade school servers in the club, KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR; participated in the production of Christmas plays, musicals, spring concerts, St. Patrick's Day programs, teaching songs, speaking parts, dance numbers, frequently directing the programs.
The preparation for the class Liturgies was the highlight of the week for Sister Mary James and her students at all grade levels. Her 15 years in junior high gave her the opportunity to develop leaders in the Church in the students who were eager to participate in the preparation of the class Liturgies. Each student was given an opportunity to sign up to do the reading, responsorial psalm, intercessions, presentation of gifts, prepare the art form when needed and participate in dramatization of the Gospel. Every student was involved in the preparation of the Liturgy, and they knew in advance when they were going to be involved. The Scriptures came alive in the classroom, as students dramatized the story of Jesus choosing the twelve, the story of Zacchaeus, the two debtors etc. Students loved the Liturgy and Scripture and sometimes asked if they could have a New Testament to keep as their very own. At the celebrations of the Class Liturgies, Sister often accompanied the music on her guitar, with students in the class.
After many delightful years of teaching, Sister enjoyed being involved: tutoring students on all grade levels, writing letters of encouragement to missionaries, praying for them, making mission rosaries, delivering Meals on Wheels, working with patients and shopping for them, helping children prepare for each new school year - shopping for school supplies, clothing and shoes, helping with costumes, attending their programs and being available to help them in any way. A former student of Sister Mary James, now a physician at Froedtert Hospital, told a colleague of his, "All I ever needed to know about life I learned from my third grade teacher!" Obituary:
John Augustine Geenen, age 84, of Francis Creek, Wisconsin, entered eternal life on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at his residence. John was the ninth child of Henry R. and Gladys Catherine (McCormick) Geenen. He was born on July 25, 1929 in Freedom, Wisconsin. John attended Saint Nicholas Elementary School. Early on, his teachers, the Notre Dame Sisters, recognized that John was a very gifted child. He was always at the top of his class and even skipped a grade. He was full of fun and always ready for a joke or prank. John had a beautiful voice, which was recognized in school where he was leader in the boys' choir. He loved music, singing and dancing. He was a Mass server and was always on time and considered it a privilege to serve Mass. He knew the Latin responses and answered the invocation of the priest in a clear and vibrant voice. After high school, John pursued education in several areas of interest. His first choice was to meet the needs of the common people. He saw the need for efficient, capable manager of the meat departments in the A&P Grocery Stores across the state of Wisconsin. He studied and mastered the newest trends in meat processing; learned about the many phases of producing, preserving and merchandising and also studied the skills development in this area. John knew the details of every phase of meat production and preservation with freezing being the most utilized method. He enjoyed preparing hickory smoked ham and making corned beef. He enjoyed selling meat and was meticulous, knowledgeable, skilled and artistic in setting up and arranging the meat display counter. As a salesman, John was pleasant, courteous and successful. He was well-informed in matters relating to the details of preparing farm and game animals, poultry, wild fowl and fish for market. John loved people. He enjoyed 20 years as an employee of the A&P Grocery chain stores. Later, John took up study of arboriculture. He studied the details of planting and caring for trees and shrubs and the steps necessary for landscaping, always aware of the appearance of the whole. When trimming trees or bushes, he was aware of symmetry and balance. He could reduce the bulky part of a shrub in a few minutes and make it pleasing to the eye. When planting a tree, he would make the tree symmetrical; check the hole for depth leaving a six inch space around the roots of the tree, putting the best soil at the bottom and filling the rest with mulch. Having a love for all nature, John enjoyed identifying trees. He was interested in the quality of lumber and the commercial value of trees. He was a licensed, fully insured landscaper and tree specialist. His professional training in tree removal, cabling, tree trimming, gutter cleaning and stump grinding was the preparation for his secondary career. John was employed by the Manitowoc Public School System for 18 years. He enjoyed faculty, staff and students. He was involved in school functions: faculty meetings, tournaments, track meets, musicals-Christmas and Spring concerts, proms, Christmas parties and graduations and he was loved by all who knew him. After retiring, John followed his heart and took up another interest of his which he had previously enjoyed-that of working with trees and plants. He started his own business, Jack's Tree and Stump Removal, which was very successful. The satisfaction of the customer was a great importance to John. It was his joy when removing a stump or tree, to clean up the area so that one would hardly notice that anything had been done. It had to be perfect. John was magnanimous in his dealings with the poor and elderly. When he did work for them, he always cut the price. During the snow season, John plowed out parking lots, places of business, residential areas and also the snow on sidewalks and driveways. Many times John helped the elderly by blowing out their sidewalks and driveways without cost to them. He loved to travel and observe other cultures and customs: Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, as well as traveling in the states. He made several trips to Branson, Missouri, because he had a great love for country music and the late artist, Johnny Cash. Joining the Senior Citizens, he was involved in their socials, lunches, dances and bus trips. Many times John was on the list for entertaining, singing, telling jokes and just making people feel great. He enjoyed working with senior citizens and the home-bound, bringing their groceries and whatever else they needed. He remembered their birthdays, anniversaries and frequently sent sympathy cards to the families. Helping the Saint Vincent de Paul Society in different ways was his forte. He delivered materials, clothing, furniture, dishes, pots and pans for other senior citizens who were unable to drive but wanted to donate to Saint Vincent de Paul Society. Frequently he was asked if he could provide logs for fireplaces in restaurants, hotels and other places of business and he always responded with a positive answer. John always participated in the 4th of July Parade in Manitowoc County. It was his joy to share candy and goodies with children and families along the parade route. He attended and loved the Firemen's Picnic and many other community functions. When waysides were the "place to enjoy a cookout", John invited friends to come and join him. He was always the Chef. He had such a marvelous sense of humor that made the day "A Day to Remember". John shared his talents, his humor, his music, his faith, and his boundless energy with his friends, co-workers and his family. Survivors include his two sisters: Sister Timothy and Sister Rosemarie of Beloit, WI; along with other relatives, friends, co-workers and business associates. He was preceded in death by his parents: Henry R. and Gladys Catherine (McCormick) Geenen; five brothers: Reverend James J. Geenen, Henry R. Geenen Jr., William T. Geenen, Joseph E. Geenen, Patrick J. Geenen; three sisters: Mary (Geenen) Fox, Sister Rosalyn, and Sister Mary James.

Pat was the consummate Irishman, adorned with red hair and a well-developed sense of humor (blarney). He was a simple person of simple needs. You could find him in a library or around a campfire, listening on his Sirius radio to the Brewer, Badger, or Packer Games. He recently worked at various casinos in Laughlin, Nevada, where he was trained for a time to operate the craps table.
He is survived by his son, Jordan McCann (special friend, Stacy), Garberville, California; and his daughters, Danielle (Eric) Huser, Oshkosh, WI; and Tara McCann, LaCrosse, WI. He is further survived by his grandson, Zaden Huser; his sister, Karen Dermond, Elm Grove, WI; his brothers, Kevin (Maribeth) McCann, Neenah, WI; and his youngest brother, best man and best friend, K. Michael McCann, Dallas, TX. He shared his gift of laughter with his nieces and nephews, Brianna, Alex and Nichole Dermond, along with Michael and Erin McCann. Thanks to Renee McCann for raising three beautiful children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Colleen McCann, and a brother Michael.
Patrick's perception of life and his endless ability to make people smile will be sorely missed by those that knew him.
There will be a celebration of Patrick's life on Saturday, March 16, at Rick's Reunion Station, 539 Green Bay Road, Neenah, WI, commencing at 1 p.m. When you arrive bring along a story to share and an old photograph of Pat if you have one.
The family would like to thank Julia Primc for the kindness she provided to Pat and for directing us through the maze of Bullhead City. Also, Linda at the Tropicana Hotel in Laughlin, Nevada. Appreciate the rooms during the stay.
On the death certificate listing Pat's profession, his son Jordan entered philosopher. At the moment it created a bit of a chuckle in the room. The title nonetheless, was appropriate, inside everyone of us, is the ability to laugh, and Patrick's philosophy in life was to bring that laughter to the surface.
Amongst his family he was a kind and loving person and shall be missed as a father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. God bless his soul and may he rest in peace.

    Obituary:
Appleton - Kathy Mitchell, age 70, passed peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday morning, June 28, 2018. She fought a courageous battle with ALS, during which she demonstrated her faith, dignity, and grace. Kathy was born in Appleton on February 22, 1948, daughter of the late John and Arline (Bosser) Geenen. Kathy was a longtime Kimberly resident, and graduated from Kimberly High School in 1965. On February 18, 1987, she married Dale Mitchell at Holy Name of Jesus Parish in Kimberly and the couple relocated to Colorado Springs until 1998, when they returned to Appleton.
The most important things in life were her faith, family and friends. Kathy's heart's desire was first and foremost to serve others. Her interior design work was a ministry to others by creating a warm and inviting environment for her clients. She would use meaningful items already present in the home to personalize their space. Many of her clients became close friends.
She had a wonderful gift of hospitality that was effortless to her. Everyone was always welcome in her home. They always left feeling blessed by her gift of love.
She is survived by her husband: Dale Mitchell of Appleton. Her children are: Jason (Kara) Florek of Tampa, Florida, Corey Florek of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ryan Florek of Appleton, Joshua (Amber) Mitchell of Colorado Springs, and Anthony Mitchell of Denver. Kathy also has four beloved grandchildren, Kaitlynn White, Katrina Eiler, Trevor Florek, and Cameryn Mitchell.
Kathy is also survived by her brothers and sisters: Judith Lamers of Cleveland, Ohio, James (Janine) Geenen of Ashville, North Carolina, John Geenen of Minneapolis, Victoria (Joseph) Van Hout of Kaukauna, Lynn (Shannon) Orskog of New Castle, Colorado, Deborah (Steven) Stumpf of Menasha, John (Cindy) Strohm of Madison, Wisconsin, and James (Dawn) Strohm of Appleton, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Arline, her first husband Edwin Florek, and a brother-in-law Jack Lamers.
A service to celebrate Kathy's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at Appleton Alliance Church, 2693 W. Grand Chute Boulevard, with Pastor Dennis Episcopo officiating. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church on Saturday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM.
Our hearts are grateful for the amazing hospice team, family, and friends who supported her journey. They were our angels on earth. She will be missed terribly by everyone who knew her, but we will all be together again someday. We love you.
