English: In the year of our Lord 1876 on the 4th of April, John Finkenfluegel age 93 years (something like restored and condition) and on the 7th day of April, was buried in the parish cemetery in Little Chute.

Family History Researcher:
From Paul West - Jay & Jeanne, this is the marriage record. There is no mention of a previous spouse for either. It is normal for a previous spouse to be listed and when I look further down this page, I see one listed for another wedding and it is in the same handwriting. Though this one doesn't list Arnold Ebben as Johanna first husband either.
While it could be the same person as Jan Hendrik, I am not yet convinced for the following reasons:
J Vink is listed on the manifest for the ship America in 1848 (Line 54). It is possible that this is the one that married Johanna Ermers who was on the Maria Magdalena in 1848.
There is a death record for John Fenkenflugel Sept. 4, 1876 on Outagamie County. I still have to look that one up at the courthouse, perhaps there will be a clue there.
There are just too many unknowns here to be sure in my opinion.

John (as well as John's sister Hendrina) arrived w ith the family of Gerrit Jan's youngest sibling, Hermanus Vinkenvleugel (b orn 9 March 1804). don't know how much you are interested in Vinkenvleugel family, but I ha ve been helping Jean Reese, Helen Forbeck, and others with the family, mai nly for the ulterior motive of determining who my Catharina Elisabeth (Eli sabeth) Eiting married, and who were their descendants. Considerable prog ress has been made, but most of it has not been entered in an organized a nd evaluated manner (actually it is a real mess), and I am not goi ng to be the one to do it, or to try to communicate same (except for the d escendants of John Vinkenvleugel and Elisabeth Eiting). If you ha ve specific questions, welllll, maybe. :>) As to your suggestions of death records in Boston for Theodora Vos Eitin g: John Vinkenvleugel and Elisabeth Eiting were married in the old Holy T rinity German church in South Boston (on the mainland), and their first bo rn was recorded in another church, Most Holy Redeemer Church -- in East Bo ston (across the bay/river) -- and neither church kept reliable death/fune ral records. Civil death records are incomplete zilch too, but I contin ue to hack away at it. In one of the attachments that I sent with the previous e-mail, I asked t he question of what happened to Elisabeth Bestler, born 11 Aug 1892. I fo und my own answer -- easily done with a few local telephone calls: Elisabeth Bestler (born Aug 11, 1892), daughter of Joseph Bestler and h is first wife, Johanna Vinkenvleugel (1854 - Aug 27, 1892), became a Catho lic nun: Sister Cordala (sp?) of the Wheaton Illinois-based Franciscan s. Elisabeth was the administrator of the St. Clairs (sp?) Orphanage in D enver Colorado. She spent her retirement years in Wheaton, and died in h er 80's.I also found out quite a bit about the descendants of Joseph Bestler and h is second wife Theresa Hackel (Hackle?). They had six children 1. Ros a, 2. Mary, 3. Joseph (Joseph was the father of Rev. Joseph Bestler, a pri est now retired in Green Bay; as well as Betty, a nun; and Lois), 4. Magda lena, 5. John (John's sons, John and Bernard, live in Neenah area), a nd 6. the youngest, Jeanette, born 1915 (lives in St. Pauls nursing ho me in Kaukauna).cheers, andy

Even in The Netherlands you'll find different spellings for Vinkenvleugel. I don't think Herman was able to read or write, therefore, he could probably not spell either. Census takers, record keepers, etc. would write down their names as they sounded to them. The first names can be confusing, too. Joannes/Jan/John

We don't know for sure where Herman is buried. We suspect it's St. Paul's in Wrightstown where he died…..but not sure.

Gerrit Jan is the son of Hermanus Vinkenvleugel ( Jan 29, 1758) and Hendrina Oostendorp.
He's the oldest brother of Hemanus Vinkenvleugel a/k/a Herman Fink of Wrightstown and Dundas, WI.
Relatives of Gerrit Jan and Hermanus' brother, Arend, still live in the Dinxperlo area in The Netherlands
Stef Hermsen (Husband of Nardie Vinkenvleugel) has done extensive research on the family in The Netherlands.

Emigration: Gerrit Jan and his family emigrated via the Ship Caledonia from Rotterdam to Boston, landing July 21, 1846. Note that the last name appears to be spelled -- Vinkenolengee or Vinkenvleuger

Also onboard the Caledonia was the Etink (Eting) family, including Elizabeth (age 26) who later married Gerrit Jan and Gesina's son, Johan Hendrick, who emigrated - Jan 31, 1848 on the Ship Amphin with Hermanus Vinkenvleugel and family.
Another daughter, Hendrika, also emigrated with Hermanus and family,along with her new husband, John Kobussen, son of Dora (Theodora de Beijer) and Willem Kobussen. Dora was Hermanus' second wife. We know that Dora emigrated in 1850, but have not yet found the ship.

Joseph born in AppletonTheir house was near the site of the present site of the car barns* not mo re than 100 feet from the small Memorial building where the first big comm ercial electric lighting plant began August 20, 1882. It is a matter of hi story that the Hoover Dam, Mussel Shoals, and other gigantic projects f or creating electric power owe their existence to this Appleton unit so cl ose to the Finkenflugel home.When the family was still young, they purchased a farm in Dundas which w as later sold when the family bought a farm in Wrightstown. The Wrightsto wn farm was across the fence from the Giesbers farm. Van Zeeland owns t he farm but the original home and buildings are no longer standing. Aft er the death of Herman Fink, his widow moved to Menasha.

Whi le living there he was married to Theodora Kobussen and then in 1864 marri ed Miss Lauterbach. I cannot find anything regarding the death of Theodo ra Fink. I know that she was alive as late as the summer of 1863 but ha ve no clues as to the date of death nor the place of burial. I do know th at they were devout Catholic. Can anyone give me suggestions as to whe re I may look to find information on her. They lived near Dundas and th at is about all that I know of the location. There will probably be some people in the family, who will remember, that I and my wife and five children departed from Dinxperlo 35 years ago. I then arrived at Boston. There I have been a "koeper" (cooper? LvdH) for 7 years. The I had earned 700 dollars and with that I travelled to the west and bought myself 80 acres of land and that I sold three years ago. I have my third wife and she has 7 children, from which one daughter has married last year. she was 18 years The Children were all THEIRS. JR old. Furthermore I let you know, that I have hundred acres of land, 5 cows, 6 head barren cattle, four horses, one 8 years old, one four years old, one two years old and one from one year old. I am old and the children are young, but I am doing the most with machines. I have a grass-mower and a seed-mower, a sowing-machine and a rake-machine. They cost a lot, almost 300 dollar, because the wages are also more expensive then in Holland. Here one can earn good money. Furthermore, o yes, I had almost forgotten from my children from my first wife. The oldest son has been married in Boston, but he died and has left a wife and three children, Johanna is in Origon, Gertruida is in New York, Hendrikus died in the war and therefor I become my pension of 8 dollars each month. The youngest daughter Maria Magdalena?? LvdH is in Arkansas. This is my great Grandmother Those who live are all married. The youngest daughter has 13 children, from which two are married.

Biography:
Hermanus Vinkenveleugel used the name "Herman Fink" in America. He was also known as "Manus" and last name "Vinke". Also last name "V. Veugel". His name has also been given as "Herman Finkenflugel".

According to research from Jean Reese, Hermanus had a twin brother named Bernardus. Bernardus died 13 February 1806 in Dinxperlo at age 1 year, 11 months, 3 days.

Hermanus emigrated in November 1847 with his wife, Hendrina, and five children to America. He departed from Rotterdam with a ship named "Amphin" and arried on 31 January 1848 in New York. He settled in Boston, where he worked for 7 years as "cooper". With this job he earned and saved $700, and he then moved to the area of "Wrights Town", Wisconsin, where he bought 80 acres of farm land. His wife Hendrina (te Haken) Vinkenvleugel had been ill for two years and died at Boston, Massachusetts. Some of Hermanus' children moved with him to Wisconsin.

About, probably, 1863, Hermanus married, third, Anna Marie Lauterbach.

A letter was found which Hermanus Vinkenvleugel wrote to relatives in the Netherlands 35 years after leaving Dinxperlo with his wife and five children. The letter is dated 16 March 1885, and he writes that he had just turned 81 years old on 10 March. In the letter he signed his name, but said that replies should be addressed to the name he was known as in America, "Herman Fink". He was living in Wrightstown, Brown County, Wisconsin, having come there seven years after his arrival to America in Boston. His oldest son married in Boston, but died, leaving a wife and three children. His son Hendrikus died in the Civil war, and Hermanus received a pension of $8 month.

The Mr. Fink they refer to is likely Johan Hendrik, son of Gerrit Jan Vinkenvleugel.Johan Hendrik (a/k/a John) is the nephew that Herman Vinkenvlegel worked for at one time. His wife was Catherina Elizabeth Eiting. In the 1880 census, both Johan and his son William (aka John William) are reported as coopers, so I suspect that they must have rebuilt the shop. Obituary:
At 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, April 17th, occurred the death of Henry Fink, Sr. a pioneer settler of Calumet Co., at the home of his son Henry near Dundas at the ripe age of 85 years, 4 months and 21 days, after a lingering illness. He was a native of Germany, being born in Dusseldorf. In 1850 he came to this country, stopping one year at Boston, Mass., where he was married to Elizabeth Reiven1. In 1851 he moved with his wife to Wisconsin and settled in the wilderness in the town of Woodville, near Dundas, where he devoted his time to clearing land and farming. The deceased was one of our very first settlers, there being no railroad or roads to this vicinity at the time and they had to carry most of their provisions from Green Bay. Seven years ago this aged couple celebrated their golden wedding. The deceased served several terms as county clerk of Calumet county in the early fifties. Twelve years unreadable of paralysis unreadable invalid ever since having been taken care of by his loving wife until March 12th, 1906, when she was called to her eternal reward. Mr. Fink was a very industrious man and was greatly interested in the advancement of this section of the country. He was a good neighbor and although his death was not wholly unexpected he is deeply mourned by a large circle of relatives and friends. Though confined to his bed for a long time he bore his lot patiently. He leaves to mourn one son, Henry, one daughter, Mrs. Math Kersten2 of Rudolph, twenty six grand children and four great-grandchildren. The funeral took place Saturday from St. Francis' Church at Holland, of which he was a devout member, and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends who came to offer their last tribute of respect to their venerable friend. The services were conducted by Rev. Father Vander Elsen. Those from outside who attended were Mr. and Mrs. Math. Kersten and daughter Theresa of Rudolf, John and Bernard Broekmans and Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Coenen3 of De Pere, Mrs. John Kobussen and son of Little Chute, Mrs. John Coppers of Kaukauna, John Gerrits of Wrightstown and Mr. and Mrs. Mich. Arts of Ladysmith.

In an 1885 letter to relatives in Netherlands, Herman mentions his eldest son from his first wife had died and left a wife and three children in Boston.

In the Dinxperlo "Emigranten" papers, it lists a Bernardus born 3/30/1828 as traveling with them.

Registered in the presence of Jan Hendriks, a wooden shoe maker, aged 35 years, who is domiciled in this city and was brought as a witness to this act, which act is transcribed in the presence of two appropriate registers who have signed as witnesses.

Family History Researcher:
Johanna Vinkenvleugel and henry Gantenbein were married in a civil ceremon y. Henry was of the Methodist Faith, therefore I suppose that resulted in a civil ceremony. I think I have the only copy of the marriage fr om Calumet County. I do know that Herman Vinkenvleugel married all 3 of h is wives in the Church as did most of the rest of the family but not Johan na.Her obituary is one of the most interesting ones that I have ever read. T he service was in the Methodist church in Pasco, WA. The Rev. of the chur ch gave his sermon and then the service was turned over to the UNDERTAK ER who READ THE LAST RITES. So, my own interpretation of this is that whi le she left the church, she held on to her beliefs and at the time of h er death the husband and step sons honored that by allowing the readi ng of The last rites, but by an Undertaker????? Just have not heard th at one before. One day soon, I will go back into the paper files and lo ok at the records that sister Ella and Kris have sent me to see if I can d etermine what church the Vinkenvleugels attended. I would think that sin ce they lived in Dundas that it would have been a church near there. Acco rding to Family LORE, Lambert and Maria married almost as soon as they bo th reached Wisconsin so it is possible that they married in the church th at John and Hendrika Kobussen attended since again according to FAMILY LOR E, Hendrika Vinkenvleugel Kobussen cared for Maria and her youngest broth er much of the time while their birth Mother was ill. Hendrika traveled f rom Holland to the US with Herman, his first wife and their 5 children alo ng with her brother, John and her NEW husband John Kobussen. I have a dep osition given by Hendrika Kobussen that she spent much time in the ho me of Herman and his first wife in Holland, they traveled to the US. toget her and then when Herman and his second wife, Dora Kobussen, Mother of Jo hn Kobussen arrived in Wisconsin, it would make sense to me that they prob aby settled in the same area in which John and Hendrika Kobussen lived unt il they got an opportunity to get established. So I would think th at it is very possible that they all attended church with the Kobussen fam ily and that Lambert and Maria married in that church.(I KNOW THAT JOHN KO BUSSEN AND HIS BROTHER ANTOINE WERE VERY INSTRUMENTAL IN FURTHERING DEVELO PMENT OF ST. JOHNS AT LITTLE CHUTE.) I will check into this further and s ee if I can document any of this. There is nothing simple about this fami ly because they all used the same names so often and intermarried so frequ ently.I hope that your treatments take care of your problems and will say a pray er that you are not too ill with the treatments. I will drag out paper re cords and look more closely at them in the next few days.Take care of yourself and I surely wish that you could attend some of the se reunions. Moved to 353 3rd St. Menasha after farm near Dundas was sold. Herman and John Fink, sons of Herman Finkenfluegel, evidently received the proceeds of the farm sale. From that point on, Herman cared for his mother, Anna Marie Lauterbach at the 3rd St. Menasha home. Herman owned that home and worked at the Island Paper Company. He later moved to Fond du Lac where he resided with his daughter Mary Fink Mallman until he was placed in a Fond du Lac nursing home (Fond du Lac Lutheran Home) where he later died. While at the nursing home, a movie was made regarding the place. Herman is suppose to have had a part in the movie which was a Hollywood type venture.
Did this Joseph Fink really a son of this Herman. We know that Herman Finkenfleugel also had a son named Joseph who died at a young age.

Obituary:
Joseph - at age of 19, killed by a Northwestern train on the road near Wrightstown. He had just spent Christmas with his parents in Menasha and was returning to Green Bay. Employed by Green Bay Wooden Ware Company. He fell from the moving train and was run over, his lower extremities havi ng been severed from the body. His lifeless body was found a short time af ter, lying beside the track by a section crew that happened along. The cr ew of the freight train knew nothing of the accident and probably no one w ill ever know just how it occurred.

Hendrika Vinkenvleugel (1813-1888) married Johannes Cobissen (1822-1906) married on 11 October 1847 in Zevenaar (Netherlands). They had a daughter Petronella born in Netherlands about 1848 (your information).
My opinium says its wrong.
First: Hendrika and Johannes boarded on the Amphion and left Netherlands in November 1847.
They arrived 31 January the port of New York.
Second: Petronella is not on the shiplist of the Amphion.
So Petronella must be born in the USA.

Henry E. Fink, aged 79 years, father of Martin Fink of this city, passed away at his home, route one, Forest Junction, at 6 o'clock Monday evening following an illness of one week. The deceased was born in Forest Junction and lived there all of his life. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Hollandtown. Survivors are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. William Coenen of Menasha and Mrs. August Van Re Mortel of DePere; nine sons, Martin of Kaukauna, Joseph of Neenah, William of Wrightstown, John of Forest Junction, Nicholas of Dundas, Ben of Hilbert, Steve of Oshkosh, and Frank and Edward of Oneida; one sister, Mrs. Matthew Kersten of Rudolph; 34 granchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 9 o'clock Thursday morning from St. Francis Catholic Church, Hollandtown, with Rev. Cornelius Raymakers, pastor, in charge. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Gladys A. Nelson, Menasha, age 89, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She was born on March 10, 1919, daughter of the late Joseph and Wilhelmina (Fink) Merkel. She married James Howard Nelson on June 9, 1940; he preceded her in death on November 1, 1954. She had volunteered for Winnebago County Mental Health and she also loved to play sheepshead, read and go fishing. Gladys was also an avid Packers fan.
Gladys will be missed by her loving children: Karen Yonke, James H. (Donna) Nelson II, Nancy Nelson; 11 grandchildren: David (Janet) Yonke, Daniel (Chrystal) Yonke, Diana (Joe) Schneider, James H. Nelson III, Mike (Kerri) Svacina, Melissa Morales, Matt (Beth) Svacina, Myron Svacina, Lisa (Todd) Forseth, Andy (Laura) Kaminski, Mark (Jenny) Kaminski; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Merkel; a brother-in-law; Hank Kohler; and other relatives and friends.
Gladys was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jessica Nelson; a brother, Jack Merkel, two sisters: Mary Heckner and Loretta Bunk.

Lloyd Merkel, 89, Neenah, passed away at home Sunday, October 31, 2010. He was born August 31, 1921, in Neenah, son of Joseph and Minnie (Fink) Merkel. Lloyd married Marilyn Babbitts October 3, 1953, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Menasha, and they shared a glorious 46 years of marriage, prior to Marilyn's death November 12, 1999. Lloyd was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah. He served our country during WWII as a U.S. Army veteran stationed in Australia. Lloyd was employed by Marathon Corporation (American Can and James River) until his retirement. Lloyd enjoyed vegetable gardening, canning, relaxing at the cottage on Lake Poygan, and his pontoon boat.
Lloyd will be missed by his loving family: Margaret (Gerard) Kersten and Carl (Pamela) Merkel, both of Neenah; five grandchildren Paul (Kami) Kersten, David (Tammie) Kersten, Jennifer (special friend Scott Hughes), Merkel, Justin (fiancee Amber Killian) Merkel and Jessica (special friend Eric Harwood) Merkel; four great-grandchildren: Leia, Raya, Noah and Kayla Kersten.
Lloyd was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Jack Merkel; three sisters: Mary Heckner, Loretta Bunk and Gladys Nelson; his father and mother-in-law who were a big part of the family Carl and Margaret Babbitts.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at the Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial Street, Neenah with Rev. Michael L. Ingold officiating. Interment will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 4 p.m. Wednesday until the time of the service. Military honors will be performed by members of the U.S. Army following the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.

Former Wrightstown Pastor Dies
Wrightstown -- Funeral services for Rev. August Broekman, 76, retired pastor of St. Paul's church here who died in Kemmerer, Wyo., on Jan. 29, were held Monday morning in St. Paul's church.
Father Broekman had retired as pastor of the church last September.
He was born in De Pere, Aug. 18, 1892, the son of John and Catherine Broekman. he studies at Mount Calvary, Fond du Lac; St. Norbert college, De Pere and the American College in Louvain, Belgium, before completing theological studies at St. Francis seminary, Milwaukee.
He was ordained in St. Francis Xavier cathedral in 1919 and was first assigned to St. Philomene parish, Birnamwood.
Father Broekman also served at St. patrick's Lebanon before being appointed pastor of Holy Martyrs church, Green Bay, in April, 1932. He served there until appointed pastor at St. Paul's in 1942.
Father Broekman was noted as a woodcarver and his carvings can be seen in the church here.
Auxiliary Bishop John B. Grellinger was the principal celebrant of the concelebrated funeral Mass. Other celebrants included Fathers Angelo and Carl Feldkamp, Father Francis Van De Lee, Msgr. Franics McKeough, Fathers Alexander and Melvin, O.F.M. and Father Carl Meulemans, O.F.M. who delivered the eulogy.
Burial was in St. Paul's cemetery.

Obituary:
MartinJ. Fink, route 3, Kaukauna died at 4:30 a.m. Monday following a six week illness. He was 86. Born March 3, 1883 in the Town of Woodville, Mr. Fink farmed in the Town of Buchanan and also did mason work. He retired in 1955 when he moved to the Town of Holland. He was a member of the St. Francis Society. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church with Rev. Edward Kilsdonk officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Greenwood Funeral Home, Kaukauna. The rosary will be prayed at 8 o'clock this evening.
Survivors are his wife Hannah; two daughters, Mrs. Willard Eileen Liebergen, route 3 Kaukauna, and Mrs. Robert Schwatzbauer, Menasha; two sons, Francis Fink, route 1 Menasha, and M/Sgt. Leo A Fink, USAF Peru, Ind.; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Miss Jeanette Lamers, 20, Succumbs After Illness of One Week Little Chute - Miss Jeanette Lamers, 20, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore H. Lamers, died Thursday morning at Oshkosh after an illness of one week. Miss Lamers was taking a nurse's training course at Mercy hospital at Oshkosh. She is sur- vived by her parent, two sisters, Theresa and Irma, and four brothers, Clarence, Gordon, Jerome, and Robert all of this village. Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning at St. John church, with the Rev. John. J. Sprangers in charge. Burial will take place in the Catholic cemetery.

Van Toll, Irma C. (Lamers) - Irma C. Van Toll, 87, of Cass City, died Monday, July 25, 2011 in Northwood Meadows Medical Care Unit, Cass City. She was born March 6, 1924 in Little Chute, WI the youngest of eight children of Theodore H. and Antoinette "Nettie" (Giesbers) Lamers. She married Peter William Van Toll October 24, 1969 in St. John's Catholic Church, Little Chute, WI. He died November 21, 1999.
Irma graduated from St. John's High School in Little Chute, WI. She served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a First Lieutenant working as a nurse. Irma graduated as a Registered Nurse from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Oshkosh, WI. She worked as a nurse at Kaukauna Community Hospital, Kaukauna Clinic, Cottage Hospital in Detroit and at Tendercare Nursing Facility in Cass City
Irma is survived by her sisters-in-law: Marie Lamers-Balgie, Arline Lamers; nieces: Shari, Sandee, Lynn, Carla, Donna, Kay, Patricia, Maureen, Jenny; nephews: Lyle, Cliff, Paul, Greg, Les, Glen, Joseph, Philip, Andrew; godchildren: Maureen, Glen, Donna, Randal; 48 great nieces and nephews; special friend, Diane.
