    Sgt. Herbert E. Wittmann arrived home Tuesday with an honorable discharge from the army. Sgt. Wittmann had been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action, the bronze arrow with five battle stars and the combat infantry badge. He was a member of headquarters Company, third Battalion, 517th paratroop infantry.

    Military Service:
    He volunteered for military service as a Paratrooper on Oct. 3, 1942. On May 28, 1943, Herb arrived in Naples, Italy, and on Aug. 15, 1944, he was involved in the invasion of southern France. Herb was then wounded in the Battle of the Bulge on Jan. 30, 1945. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and other awards while stationed in Schmitt, Germany. He continued serving his country and on May 7, 1945, Herb was there for the surrender of German troops in Oslo, Norway. Herb was a proud member of the 517th Combat Team. The Germans would refer to the 517th as "The Devils in Baggy Pants". Herb was quoted as saying about the 517th, "Many good men died and a few would have been great leaders for our country."

    Wittmann, Herbert E. "Herb" - Herbert Edward Wittmann, 86, made his final jump and passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, July 4, 2009. He was born on Sept. 17, 1922, in Darboy, to the late Herman and Margaret Wittmann. Herb attended Kaukauna High School and the Vocational School of Engineering. He volunteered for military service as a Paratrooper on Oct. 3, 1942. On May 28, 1943, Herb arrived in Naples, Italy, and on Aug. 15, 1944, he was involved in the invasion of southern France.     After Herb served his country honorably, he returned stateside and married his loving wife, Jermayne Kuepper in Darboy in 1947. Together they raised six children in Kimberly. Herb was a proud member of the Legion and the Carpenters Local Union 955 for 62 years. He worked for Precour and Oscar Boldt and was a Superintendent in heavy construction. He built many homes and helped with home projects for his family. His last building was the Kimberly Football Field press box.
    Herb will be sadly missed by his wife, Jermayne Wittmann, Kimberly; children, Ned (Sue) Wittmann, Kimberly; Gail (Mike) Thiel, Appleton; Todd (Sarah) Wittman, Appleton; Jay (Stephanie) Wittman, Appleton; Dean (Diane), Darboy; grandchildren, Tim (Megan), Robert, Jolene, Chris (Hannah), Cynthia (Brad), Laura (Dan), Monica, Maria, Jacob, Brandon, Cody, Bryce, Zachary, Sawyer, Natasha; great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Andrew, Olivia, Eden; brother, Gerald Wittmann; and several nieces and nephews. Herb is further survived by his sister-in-law, Florence Buchberger; and brother-in-law, Jerome Kuepper.
    Herb is preceded in death by his son, Gary Wittmann; and his grandson, Samuel Wittmann.
    A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Holy Spirit Parish, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue, Kimberly, with Fr. Jim VandenHogan officiating. Friends may call at the church for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A committal service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2009, at Holy Name Cemetery in Kimberly.

    Obituary:
    Jerald H. Wittman, 83, of Racine, passed away May 15, 2010 at Burlington Memorial Hospital. He was born June 22, 1926 to Herman and Margaret (Smith) Wittman in Peshtigo, WI. His family later moved to Kaukauna, WI. At the young age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy and served two years in the Asiatic-Pacific, Philippines, and Japanese areas. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon 4 Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon 1 Star, the Victory Ribbon, and the American Area Ribbon.
    Following his military service, Jerry lived for many years in Appleton and worked as a painter. Jerry moved to Union Grove in the early sixties. On October 24, 1967, he married Ellen (Wicks) Schaetten who preceded him in death on December 23, 1997. He continued to work as a painter for Southern Colony and retired from the Village of Union Grove. After retirement he worked for the Metro Auto Auction.
    With encouragement from his late son-in-law, Joe, Jerry took up golfing and spent a lot of time "chasing that little white ball around in the grass." Jerry always enjoyed having breakfast on Thursday mornings with his friends from the Metro Auto Auction. He was a member of the Union Grove American Legion. Jerry attended the Navy reunions every year.
    Jerry is survived by his son, Robert (Nancy) Wittman, Green Bay, WI, three daughters, Joann (Mark) Young, Appleton, WI, Jan (Richard) Langlois, Minneapolis, MN, and Jean (Bruce) Rogers, Appleton, WI, nine grandchildren, Scott (Amy) Wittman, Keith (Heather) Wittman, Kevin (Rhonda) Young, Rebecca (James) McNally, Bryce Rogers, Jaclyn Rogers, Jessica Rogers, Ryan Langlois, and Kelsey (Tony) Langlois, and six great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his step-children, Darlene (Larry) Burchell, Christine Alton, Marcine (Leslie) Reeck, and Bernene Kingery, 12 step-grandchildren, 18 step-great-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-great grandchildren.
    Burial with graveside service and full military honors will take place on June 2, 2010 at 11:30 AM at the Union Grove Memorial Cemetery.

    Appleton - Marvin "Phat" C. Filz, age 95, of Appleton, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017. He was born to the late Marvin Sr. and Rozella (Smith) Filz on June 28, 1922 in Appleton. Phat attended Appleton High School West and graduated in 1940.
    Phat proudly served his country as a Master Sergeant in the U.S Army. His time served spanned through WWII. Recently Phat took part in the Old Glory Flight to Washington D.C.
    He married the love of his life, Doris Langman, on August 16, 1947 in Appleton at St. Joseph Catholic Church. They were blessed with their two daughters, Debbie and Becky.
    Phat was employed at Institute of Paper Chemistry and Valley Iron Works. He retired as supervisor and machinist from the Institute of Paper Chemistry in 1988.
    In his early years Phat enjoyed softball, square dancing, bowling and visiting the YMCA. He and his wife Doris are life-long members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Appleton. Phat had a creative and imaginative mind and loved to woodwork. He was a life-long Packer Backer and Wisconsin Badger Basketball fan. Above all he cherished being a dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and especially a loving and faithful husband.
    His survivors are his loving wife, Doris, of whom he shared 70 wonderful years of marriage with; his two daughters, Debbie (Gary) Van Handel of Green Bay and Becky (Thomas C.) Thiel of Appleton; his grandchildren, Michael (Cecilia) Van Handel of Gurnee, IL, Michelle (Daniel) Owen of Madison, WI and Andrew "AJ" Van Handel of Madison, WI; his step grandson, Andrew Thiel (and special friend, Haley Purpus); his great-grandchildren, Jackson Van Handel, Joshua and Caleb Owen; his step great-grandchild, Ahana Thiel. Phat is further survived by his sister, Delores Cowan; and his sister-in-law, Margaret (Jim) Winterfeldt; his nieces and nephews, Rodney Langman, Stacy Kennelly, Scott Winterfeldt, Bob Filz, Tom Filz and Jeff Filz.
    In addition to his parents Phat was preceded in death by his in-laws, Charlie (Mamie) Langman; two brothers, Merrill and Myron; his brother-in-law, Donald Langman and many other dear relatives.

    Appleton - Deloris "Sis" M. (Filz) Cowan, age 94, passed away March 17, 2018. She was born October 2, 1923, daughter of the late Marvin and Rozella (Smith) Filz. Deloris married Robert A. Cowan in 1958 and the couple were happily married for 48 years.
    Deloris worked at the Institute of Paper Chemistry and at Kimberly-Clark until her retirement in 1961.
    Sis and Bob enjoyed traveling the Midwest for 25 years, collecting and selling antiques. Once they were retired, they enjoyed spending the winter months in McCallen, TX.
    In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Merril "Sonny" (Wahneta) Filz, Marvin "Phat" (Doris) Filz, and Myron "Bud" (Carmen) Filz.
    She will be missed by her nieces, nephews, and the staff and patients at Willow Lane.
    Friends may call at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton, on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 from 9:30 am until the funeral mass at 11:00 am with Fr. Jim Leary officiating.     Appleton - It is with great sadness and heartbreak, that the family of La Vonne "Vonnie" Kolberg announces her unexpected passing on Monday, May 14, 2018 at the age of 74. Vonnie was born in Appleton on September 30, 1943 to the late Frank "Butch" and Delores (Bouressa) Wittman. She was proudly known as the "director of first impressions" for many years at Goodwill.
    Vonnie will be forever remembered and deeply missed by her children, Vicky, Dawn, and Cindy; her 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; her siblings, Wayne (Karen), Jim (Judy), Sherri, Gene, Marge, and Chaz. She is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews, extended friends and family, her beloved dog Marley, and closest friends Mike, Sara, and Sue.
    She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Delores, son Daniel, and sister Lynn.
    A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, May 24, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Nickel Funeral Chapel. Friends will be received Thursday at the funeral chapel from 11 am until the time of service.

    Lynn Eick, age 65, of Little Chute, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2012 with her family at her side. She was born on November 28, 1946 in Appleton, the daughter of the late Frank "Butch" and Dolores (Bouressa) Wittman. Lynn was employed at National Envelope for seventeen years. She enjoyed sewing and playing cards with her sisters. Her family meant the world to her, especially the grandchildren.

    Dan Kolberg, lovingly referred to as Danny, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday afternoon, August 24, 2008, at his home in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was born October 28, 1974. Dan's travels during his journey with us took him to many different locations where he enjoyed meeting new people, participating in the Special Olympics, and enjoying the company of his family and friends. He loved watching the Green Bay Packers in the fall and the Brewers in the spring. Keeping stats on his computer, along with an occasional Madden game were some of his favorite pastimes. Mostly, Danny enjoyed being with his family whenever he could!! Dan was presented with many challenges throughout his life and will always be known as "our" hero!!
    Dan is survived by his mother, LaVonne (Witt-man) Kolberg, his father, Wayne Kolberg, sisters: Vicky Matullo, Cindy Sleeter and Dawn Kolberg; five nephews: Casey, Wayne, Eugene, Brent, and Christopher; six nieces: Saunja, Brooke, Sarah, Johnna, ShellbyAnne and Sheila; and a great-niece, Savannah and a great-nephew, Caleb.
    A celebration of Dan's life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, August 28, at the Brettschneider-Trettin-Lederer Funeral Chapel with Rev. John McFadden officiating.
