    Sgt. Herbert E. Wittmann arrived home Tuesday with an honorable discharge from the army. Sgt. Wittmann had been awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action, the bronze arrow with five battle stars and the combat infantry badge. He was a member of headquarters Company, third Battalion, 517th paratroop infantry.

    Military Service:
    He volunteered for military service as a Paratrooper on Oct. 3, 1942. On May 28, 1943, Herb arrived in Naples, Italy, and on Aug. 15, 1944, he was involved in the invasion of southern France. Herb was then wounded in the Battle of the Bulge on Jan. 30, 1945. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and other awards while stationed in Schmitt, Germany. He continued serving his country and on May 7, 1945, Herb was there for the surrender of German troops in Oslo, Norway. Herb was a proud member of the 517th Combat Team. The Germans would refer to the 517th as "The Devils in Baggy Pants". Herb was quoted as saying about the 517th, "Many good men died and a few would have been great leaders for our country."

    Wittmann, Herbert E. "Herb" - Herbert Edward Wittmann, 86, made his final jump and passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, July 4, 2009. He was born on Sept. 17, 1922, in Darboy, to the late Herman and Margaret Wittmann. Herb attended Kaukauna High School and the Vocational School of Engineering. He volunteered for military service as a Paratrooper on Oct. 3, 1942. On May 28, 1943, Herb arrived in Naples, Italy, and on Aug. 15, 1944, he was involved in the invasion of southern France.     After Herb served his country honorably, he returned stateside and married his loving wife, Jermayne Kuepper in Darboy in 1947. Together they raised six children in Kimberly. Herb was a proud member of the Legion and the Carpenters Local Union 955 for 62 years. He worked for Precour and Oscar Boldt and was a Superintendent in heavy construction. He built many homes and helped with home projects for his family. His last building was the Kimberly Football Field press box.
    Herb will be sadly missed by his wife, Jermayne Wittmann, Kimberly; children, Ned (Sue) Wittmann, Kimberly; Gail (Mike) Thiel, Appleton; Todd (Sarah) Wittman, Appleton; Jay (Stephanie) Wittman, Appleton; Dean (Diane), Darboy; grandchildren, Tim (Megan), Robert, Jolene, Chris (Hannah), Cynthia (Brad), Laura (Dan), Monica, Maria, Jacob, Brandon, Cody, Bryce, Zachary, Sawyer, Natasha; great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Andrew, Olivia, Eden; brother, Gerald Wittmann; and several nieces and nephews. Herb is further survived by his sister-in-law, Florence Buchberger; and brother-in-law, Jerome Kuepper.
    Herb is preceded in death by his son, Gary Wittmann; and his grandson, Samuel Wittmann.
    A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at Holy Spirit Parish, 600 E. Kimberly Avenue, Kimberly, with Fr. Jim VandenHogan officiating. Friends may call at the church for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A committal service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 10, 2009, at Holy Name Cemetery in Kimberly.
    Herb's family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the staff at Appleton Medical Center's Intensive Care Unit and especially Lesley for all their care and support for our dad.
