    Obituary:
Vernon L. Landwehr, 82, passed away suddenly at home on Saturday night, August 3, 2013, after a long struggle with heart disease and diabetes.
Born June 21, 1931, he was the youngest of 14 children of Emma and Paul Landwehr, Isaar, east of Seymour. He grew up on the family farm learning at an early age the lessons of family and hard work which he passed on by example to his own family. He married Carol A. Perrigoue, also the youngest of a large Green Bay family, on November 27, 1952. This past November, he and Carol enjoyed their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends at their home.
Vern and Carol raised their family on the west side of Green Bay. He is survived by two sons, Douglas Landwehr and his wife, Nanette Nelson, Green Bay; Scott Landwehr and his wife, Renee, Little Chute; three daughters, Debra Landwehr, Green Bay; Dr. Sandra Landwehr; and Cindy Kocken and her husband, Frank, all of De Pere. Vernon especially prized calls and visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Dr. Christina Finken and her husband, Adam, Iowa City, Iowa; Hannah Pepin and her husband, Brandon, Platteville; Zachariah Landwehr, Florida; Sarah Kocken and her daughter, Bailey, De Pere; Melissa Linzmeier and her husband, Jon, and their children, Cecilia and Quinn, Elk Mound; Cory Kocken and his daughter, Avaleigh, De Pere; and Emily Kocken and her daughter, Maleah, De Pere. Vernon is also survived by one brother, Donald Landwehr Sr. and his wife, Marion, Green Bay, one sister, Rita Haase, Green Bay, and hundreds of cousins, nieces, and nephews in Northeastern Wisconsin.
Vernon worked at many trades as he raised and supported his family; welder at Northwest Engineering; truck driver at Green Bay Soap; meat carver at Liebmann Packing; and carpentry for Davis Construction among other contractors. During the last half of his career, Vernon framed, sided, and roofed many homes for local families and was often assigned to the finishing work, including cabinetry, within a house. After he retired, he spent many hours in his workshop building rocking horses for grandchildren, snack trays in the shape of footballs and Christmas trees, jewelry chests, and even complete kitchen cabinets and built-in bookcases for friends and family. His workshop was the site of many busy, dusty, happy times.
On Sundays during the summer, Vernon and Carol would pack up their young family and join relatives for all day excursions at lakeside picnic tables at Chute Pond near Mountain and, later, Shadow Lake in Waupaca. Once a year, the extended family would rent a row of cabins near Elcho, WI, for a week of swimming, sunning, water-skiing, fishing, card-playing, and laughter. The memories made during those days lasted all year and beyond. After retirement, Vernon and Carol, took many driving trips across the country, often in the western United States, and, about 12-years ago, they enjoyed a two-week trip to Alaska and the Northwest Passage.
Also in retirement, Vernon and Carol together found a new activity, golf. They spent many summer days on the golf courses of the area, and especially enjoyed rounds at Pine Acres. When Vernon first became ill with heart disease, he and Carol also joined the Concerned Hearts group of Bellin Hospital, Green Bay, and enjoyed volunteering in the cardiac unit on the second floor. Doctors and nurses, who he volunteered for often were his principal caregivers. Reaching back to his farm background, he and Carol always planted and cared for a large garden, often growing his tomato plants from seeds. In recent years, he also became interested in winemaking and produced many fine vintages using his own apples, grapes and other local fruit. He proudly distributed his custom-labeled bottles to family and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Emma and Paul; three half-sisters, Lucille Mathiesen, Mary Doust and Caroline Landwehr; five brothers, Leonard Landwehr, Alois Landwehr, Wilbert Landwehr, Carlton Landwehr, Francis Landwehr; and three sisters, Mildred Eick, Susan Schmit and Bernice Dombrowicki.
Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
