Obituary:
James J. Hermes, Little Chute, age 88 died Monday October 10, 2011 at the St. Paul Home. He was born in Little Chute on May 1, 1923 to the late Peter J. and Nettie (Van Thiel) Hermes. Jim married Evelyn Vanevenhoven on August 28, 1947 at Holy Cross Parish in Kaukauna. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258. Jim worked at the Combined Locks Paper Mill and retired after 44 years of service. Jim enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing and spent a great deal of time in his workshop. He was a lifelong member of St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church. Many will remember Jim as a talented winemaker, sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He treasured his family and was a wonderful father and grandfather.
Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn; children: Susan (Mark) Van Lanen, De Pere; Sharon (James) Farrell, Princeville, IL; John (Mary) Hermes, Little Chute; and Chuck (Betsy) Hermes, Little Chute; grandchildren: Matthew, Andrew and Nicholas Van Lanen, Michael, Noah (Jill) and Madeline Farrell, Megan (David) Durflinger, Kyle (Hannah), Joshua, Allison, Taylor, Eric (Dacia) and Robbie Hermes and Marsha (Bernie) Hall; great grandchildren: Matthew, Maddalynn, Owen, Ava and Emma; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Frances Vissers and Alma Vanevenhoven. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his father and mother-in-law John and Hattie Vanevenhoven; sisters and brother: Elsie (Gordon) Ludtke, Frances (Anthony) Janssen and Sylvester "Ves" (Joyce) Hermes; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Lillian (Martin) Thyssen, Marian (Nick) Kavanaugh, Angeline (Willard) Vanden Heuvel, Howard, Ervin (Martha), Raymond (Rita), Ralph (Angeline), Henry (Harriet), Rosemary, Arthur (Nellie) and Orville Vanevenhoven.
Visitation will be held Saturday October 15, 2011 at ST. JOHN NEPOMUCENE CATHOLIC CHURCH (323 S. Pine St. Little Chute) beginning at 9:00 a.m. until time of Mass at11:00 a.m. The Rev. James Hablewitz will officiate. Full military honors conducted by the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258 will immediately follow. Committal St. John Cemetery.
