    Obituary:
    Clarence J. Schmitz, age 94, Chilton, died on Wednesday, January 21, 2009, following a short illness, at Affinity Medical Center in Chilton. He lived at Century Ridge for the past three years and in the Chilton area for his entire adult life. He was born March 4, 1914, in Hilbert, son of the late William and Mary (Phrang) Schmitz. Clarence married Bernice Cullen on October 12, 1937, at St. Martin Catholic Church in Charlestown. She preceded him in death on November 23, 1987. Clarence started working for the Manitowoc Ship Builders, where he learned the electrician trade. He then worked with Hillside Cheese Factory for several years where he earned his Cheese Maker License. Clarence then joined the Calumet County Highway Department and worked for the county until he retired in 1979. Clarence was avid gardener and his crops flourished under many hours of his care. He was known for his beautiful raspberry patch and a large potato yield, as well as his flowers and apple trees. During his retirement, Clarence enjoyed traveling and activities with his wife, Bernice and their lifelong friends, Elmer and Doris Schmitz. Clarence was a member of Good Shepherd Parish and took his faith very seriously.
    Survivors include his son Gerald (Ruth) Schmitz, Chilton; four grandchildren including David (Sharon) Schmitz, Appleton; Steve Schmitz (Diane Heimmermann), Chilton; Julie (Karl) Kelley, Chilton; and Jodie (Dave) Baus, Pipe; 3 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister Veronica Thielmann, Chilton; and four sister in-laws, Monica Schmitz, Thelma Schmitz, Pearl (Art) Bruns and Lucille Cullen.
    Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Eugene; four brothers, Roman, Norbert, William and George Schmitz; four sisters, Lorraine Heller, Lucile Gottschalk, Marie Wilcox and Margaret Hopfensperger.
    Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2009, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2009, and on Monday at the church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. The family would like to thank Dr. Gene Tipler and his staff and the staff of Affinity Medical Center in Chilton for the wonderful care and compassion they provided and the staff at Century Ridge who enriched his life over past three years.

    Hopfensperger, Margaret (Mrs. Lester) Margaret Ann Hopfensperger passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 24, 2006. Born June 20, 1918, in Hilbert, WI, Margaret was one of ten children of William and Mary Schmitz. She graduated from Hilbert High School, worked in a canning factory, and then married Lester Hopfensperger. Margaret lived in Appleton for more than 60 years. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards and cooking.
    She was a 50 year member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton.
    She is survived by six children: Judy (Dave) Van Handel of Darboy; Dennis (Sandy) Hopfensperger of Dallas, TX; Joyce (Robert) Stertz of Omro; Dane (Janice) Hopfensperger of Neenah; Jean Hopfensperger of Minneapolis; and Alan (Margie) Hopfensperger of Appleton; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren: sister, Veronica Thielmann of Chilton; and brother, Clarence Schmitz of Chilton. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Lester, and seven brothers and sisters.
    A funeral service for Margaret will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, October 26, 2006, at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.
