    Obituary:
Edward Joseph Jochmann, age 90, of N9444 Cty. Hwy. N, Appleton passed aw ay on November 12, 2005. He was born December 7, 1914 in the Town of Harri son, the son of the late Henry and Katherine (Fischer) Jochmann. On Janua ry 25, 1939, he married Rosella Marie Hoelzel at Holy Angels Catholic Chur ch in Darboy. They remained members of this parish until their deaths.
All his life Edward Jochmann has built things, and each of his projects se emed to get a little bigger. The junk pile in his backyard may have be en an unpleasing sight to the ordinary person, but to Ed, the self-taug ht wizard, the pile represented a gold mine and nucleus for many a need ed farm machine. When he needed a piece of machinery, he just went to t he scrap pile in his backyard and built it.
His "do-it-yourself" projects date back to 1933, when he built an electr ic welder. With used tractor, truck and auto parts, he built his first fa rm tractor in 1935. Since that time, he built four other farm tractor s, a grain blower, a hammer-mill, five garden tractors, three chopper s, a grain swatter, two self-propelled grain swatters with automatic au to transmissions used for steering, and three self-unloading chopper rack s.
Through the years, Ed built almost all the machinery used on his dairy far m. Each spring, the neighbors would watch the fields to see what new equip ment Ed had made over the winter months.
When winter came, Ed always took the time to go sturgeon fishing. During h is career he speared about a dozen sturgeons. Ed took great pride in maki ng his own sturgeon spears. During the winter season for several year s, Ed worked for Les Stumpf, working at the Ford garage in Sherwood, at t he corner of 55 and KK, and even the garage in Appleton.
He was an avid EAA enthusiast and attended the show in Oshkosh until his l egs no longer permitted that much walking on uneven ground. Probably his b iggest flying accomplishment was helping Steve LaDuke build his Kolb Ma rk II ultra-light plane.
Harley-Davidson motorcycles have also held a special interest with Ed. T he second motorcycle that he purchased (for $2.50) came in a basket. Ed h ad to completely reassemble the motorcycle.
Ed became interested in sawing lumber. In 1976, he built his own sawmill u sing framework from two school buses and, of course, his famous junk pil e. The only purchased item on the sawmill was the saw blade.
Electricity can also be added to Ed's list of skills. He built a windmi ll in 1983 with four propeller blades each 12' long and placed it on t op of his silo.
Ed's mechanical talents did not stay with just farm equipment. At Junior S alm's request, Ed and Junior examined the bell system at St. John's in Lit tle Chute. Ed manufactured a piece for the bell system. And stories go o n, and on.
In later years, Ed developed quite a talent for cooking. His use of spic es and his "touch" made many a meal an enjoyable experience. When Rosel la became ill, Ed was right at her side to be an extra helping hand and ca ring husband.
Edward will be deeply missed by his seven children: Edward Jochmann, Jr ., Darboy; Sister Rose Jochmann, Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cros s, Bay Settlement; Margaret (John) Killa, Darboy; Francis Jochmann, Sheboy gan; Paul Jochmann, Darboy; Thomas Jochmann, Darboy; and Theresa (Denni s) Brown, Darboy; a grandchild, Sara Brown, Darboy; his sister, Catheri ne (Jack) Jochmann Magee, Oregon; sister-in-laws: Viola Hoelzel, Kaukaun a; Dolores Hoelzel, Darboy; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Katherine Jochmann; t wo sisters: Anna (Jochmann Hartzheim) Hoffmann; and Marie (Jochmann) and J oseph Hopfensperger; and two brothers: Anton (and wife, Genevieve) and L eo Jochmann. His wife's family further preceded him in death: John and An na Hoelzel; two sisters-in-law: Agnes and Baby Hoelzel; and two brothers-i n-law: Anthony and Clarence Hoelzel.
