    Baer, Frederick E.Frederick E. Baer, 82, Green Bay, died on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006. He was b orn April 6, 1924, in Pforzheim, Germany, to the late William G. and Em ma B. (Funk) Baer. He immigrated to the USA at age 6 months and gr ew up in Springfield, Ohio. Fred entered the U.S. Army Corps after graduat ing high school, attaining the rank of 2nd lieutenant. He served in the 8 th Air Force as a lead bombardier in B-17s during World War II. After t he war, Fred received a college education at Ohio State University, gradua ting in December 1948. He married Patricia Wood on July 1, 1947, at Fir st United Methodist Church in Green Bay. Fred joined Paper Converting Mach ine Company in December 1948 and over a 44 year career held a number of po sitions, culminating in serving as the company's president and CEO from 19 69 until his retirement in 1993.Fred was a champion of advancing the principles of philanthropy. Guid ed by the philosophy of L.G. Wood (Patricia's late father) that "when li fe has been good to you, you should return these gifts to your fellow m an and the community," he has given of his time, leadership, wisdom, and f inancial support to diverse community projects throughout his lifetime.His impact permeates northeast Wisconsin. Fred provided campaign co-leader ship for and participated in numerous fundraising campaigns, including t he YWCA, Salvation Army, Heritage Hill, First United Methodist Church, Com munity Service Center, Green Bay Symphony, Cerebral Palsy, Bellin Hospita l, and Brown County Association For Retarded Citizens. He co-chaired Bell in College of Nursing's $2 million endowment campaign.Because of Fred's generosity, the Weidner Center in Green Bay has a world- class organ; St. Norbert College in De Pere has an outstanding campus mal l; Bellin College of Nursing has an endowment to insure its future; studen ts receive scholarships to support their education; health and human servi ces organizations have facilities and services; the needy receive assistan ce; and museums have prospered.Fred's civic, charitable and community service volunteer activities includ ed: American Red Cross, Bank One Green Bay, Bank One Corporation-Milwauke e, Bellin Hospital, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Brown County Association F or Retarded Citizens, Brown County Civic Music Association, Chamber of Com merce, Community Service Center, Ephraim Foundation, First United Methodi st Church, Green Bay Symphony, Neville Public Museum, Salvation Army, Univ ersity of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wisconsin Foundation of Independent College s, Lester G. Wood Foundation, YMCA and YWCA.Fred served as president and chief executive officer of Paper Converting M achine Company for 24 of his 44 years with the company. Under his leadersh ip, the international company grew to three wholly-owned subsidiaries in G reen Bay, manufacturing plants in England and Germany and a sales and serv ice office in Japan. He served on the company's board of directors. Pap er Converting Machine Company espoused the Baer Family philosophy which w as reflected by its philanthropic support of and volunteer leadership in c ommunity organizations.Fred has given his time, leadership and financial support so that organiza tions in northeast Wisconsin would survive, grow and prosper. In 1995, t he Salvation Army awarded the William Booth Award to the Frederick E. Ba er Family. In 1993, Fred received the Brown County Association For Retard ed Citizens President's Award; he was named the sixth recipient of the Gre en Bay Rotary Club Free Enterprise Award in 1988, and Fred and Patricia re ceived the 1986 William Heraly MacDonald Award from the United Way of Bro wn County; the Chancellors Award from the University of Wisconsin-Green Ba y; the Outstanding Philanthropist Award in 1996, presented by the Northea st Wisconsin Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives; t he President's Medal-St. Norbert College in 1992.Fred is survived by his wife of 59 years, Patricia (Wood) Baer; three son s, Frederick W.
