    MAN HURT IN FALL DIES AT HOSPITAL
    Menasha, Wls. - Jacob Birling. route 1, Menasha, passed away Thursday evening at 9.50 o'clock at Theda Clark hospital where he was being treated for injuries sustained in a fall at his home on the Manitowoc road two weeks ago. He was suffering from a compound fracture of the leg and his condition became more serious a week ago when he had a stroke. Mr. Birling was born July 21, 1870. in the town of Menasha and spent all his life in this vicinity. He is survived by two brothers, Joseph Birling, and Gerhard Birling, both of the town of Menasha, and four sisters, Mrs. John Vanderlinden, town of Harrison; Mrs, Edward LaBundard, Neenah; Mrs. Harry Bodeman of Appleton and Miss Elizabeth Birling of the town of Menasha. He will be taken to the Gerhard Birling home tomorrow from the Laemmrich funeral parlors and the services will be held Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Mary's church. Rev. John Hummel will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery.

    Age 88. passed away at 7 10 a.m. Wednesday after a short illness. She was born January 29, 1874, in the Town of Menasha and has been a resident of Appleton most of her life. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mrs. Vander Linden is survived by five daughters, Mrs Jack Braun and Mrs. William Schuldes, both of Appleton; Mrs. Albert Jansen, Black Creek; Mrs.
    Harold Dehn. Oshkosh: Mrs. Raymond Timm, Appleton; three sons, Jack, Clifford and James, all of Appleton; 2? grandchildren, and ?0 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the cortage forming at 9:30 a.m, at the BrettSchneider Funeral Home. Interment will he in St. Joseph Cemtery.     Vander Linden, James E., AppletonAge 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 28, 2003 at Appleton Me dical Center. Jim was born October 30, 1912 in Appleton, son of the late J ohn and Rose (Birling) Vander Linden and has resided in Appleton all of h is life. He was formerly employed by Frank J. Strebel Interior Decorato rs for many years and later by Zwicker Knitting Mills until his retiremen t. Jim was united in marriage to Lucille Foley on July 4, 1937, shari ng 25 years together before her death on March 16, 1963. He later marri ed Veronica Sewall of Menasha. She preceded him in death on January 18, 19 91. Jim will be remembered as a hands on type of guy who lived life to t he fullest. This included building his own home on Hoover St. in Appleto n, even digging the basement. He could fix just about anything and was ve ry proud of his yard. But the main thing he will be remembered for was h is love of music. Jim was an accomplished musician who could play sever al instruments. He played for several area bands including Tom Temple a nd The Bob Tubbs Orchestras. He also loved his church and was an active me mber of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.Jim will be deeply missed by his daughter Mary (Daryl) Nutting of Appleto n; two sons James R.     Jane E. Timm, age 93, of Appleton, died Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Jane was born on December 2, 1921 in Appleton, the daughter of the late John J. and Rosinen (Birling) Vander Linden. Jane married Raymond Timm on April 13, 1946. He preceded her in death on September 14, 2012. Together, they had one son, Ronnie, who passed away at the age of 9.
    Jane worked at a neighborhood grocery store for a short time, after which she was a homemaker. She enjoyed people and loved to spend time visiting relatives. Jane was a great friend to her neighbors (and their dogs) and they, in turn, were very good to her. She had a sweet tooth and would not turn down a cookie or sweet roll. Jane had a remarkable memory, sharing detailed stories of life in Appleton during the early 1900's.
    Jane was preceded in death by her parents, husband and son, brothers; John (Eleanor), Clifford (Evelyn) and James (Veronica), and sisters; Mayme (Jack) Braun, Viola (Clifford) Tierney, Rose (Bill) Schuldes, Agnes (Albert) Jansen and Esther (Harold) Dehn. Jane is survived by a brother in law, Robert Lueck and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
    Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at 11:00 am at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St, Appleton, with Deacon Mark Farrell officiating. A time of visiting and sharing of memories will be held before the service, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Appleton. Per Jane's wishes, in lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established in her name.
    The family would like to thank the medical staff on 3rd floor at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their kindness and care for Jane.

    Bodmer, Jose ph J.Joseph J. Bodmer, Appleton, age 92, passed away on Thursday, February 2 3, 2006, at Colony Oaks Care Center. He was born in Appleton on Decemb er 2, 1913, to the late Henry and Mathilda (Birling) Bodmer, and he was t he last survivor of their family of 11. On February 6, 1940, he married Do rothy Nieuwenhuis at St. Therese Catholic Church in Appleton and they shar ed 66 wonderful years together. Joe was a graduate of Old Appleton West Hi gh School. He worked for Schaefer Dairy for 25 years before taking the man agement position at the Forester Club for 17 years.He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Knights of Columbu s, a Pioneer of the Grand Chute Lions, and a charter member of St. Thom as More Parish. He was an avid bowler and golfer, and enjoyed golfing unt il he was 87 years old.He will be sadly missed by his wife, Dorothy; his children: Jerry (Dolore s) Bodmer, Jo-Ann (Pete) Piotrowski, Joyce (Peter) Mislinski, all of Apple ton; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Char les (Leona), Robert (Florence); sisters: Martha (Arthur) Daelke, Sylvia (R ichard) Laux, Arnolda Sheldon, Mary (Alvin) Lietz, Irene (Melvin) Puls.Funeral Mass for Mr. Bodmer will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 200 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas More Parish (1810 N.     Theodore J. Birling Sr., age 88, of Clintonville, passed away on Monday, December 2, 2013, at Pine Manor Health Care following a short illness with his family by his side. On May 31, 1925, Theodore James was born to the late Henry and Matie (Mielke) Birling. He graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School and following graduation, he took on the family tradition, along with his father of dairy farming and distribution of milk products, known as Birling's Dairy. In the early 1960's, he became a distributor for Morning Glory Dairy due to requirements in how milk needed to be processed. He took a small dairy business and developed it into a distribution of six surrounding communities. Ted transitioned from being a milk product distributor to become a welder for Badger Northland. In 1978 he moved to Clintonville with his wife Dorothy and children and started dairy farming. At the age of 63 he became semi-retired from farming. One of Ted's favorite parties, along with his wife, was the Labor Day Chicken Booyah Sunday. There was always lots of food, drink, and friendship. Anyone was welcome to join the festivities. Some of Ted's favorite hobbies were bowling, baseball, hunting, and fishing, particularly ice fishing. When ice fishing had started on Lake Winnebago, the word on the lake was "Follow the blue van if you want to catch fish." He also loved playing cards, especially Sheepshead and Cribbage. He loved playing and teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to play Caroms.

    The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, December 6, 2013, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 528 Second Street in Menasha with Fr. Paul Paider officiating. The visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the hour of the Mass at the church. Interment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in the Town of Menasha. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
    The family would like to extend a special thank you to Terry and Brenda Birling for taking care of our father and grandfather for the past 12 years, as well as the staff at Pine Manor and Dr. Beth Gillis - everyone was so caring and kind to Ted and his family. It was very much appreciated.

    Harold Birling, 86, Neenah, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010. He was born March 23, 1924, in Neenah, son of Joseph and Rose (Marquardt) Birling. Harold was a U.S. Navy veteran, having joined the Navy in 1942 after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. On May 31, 1947, Harold married Carol Hanson and they recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. Together they had three children; two sons, Jeffrey (Kathy), Hortonville, who was born on Harold's 25th birthday; Dan, Wausaukee; and a daughter Chris, Appleton. Harold was a skilled carpenter, having learned his trade from his wife's Uncle August Selle.
    He was employed by Carpenters Local 955 in Appleton until his retirement. Harold then fulfilled a dream by building his own retirement home in Wausaukee. He loved the outdoors and watching the deer in their backyard, feeding the birds, going camping with his grandchildren, hunting, and fishing. Harold was a member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Neenah.
    Harold is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his three children; grandchildren who referred to him as "Grampa Bunka": Billie Jo (Jake) Gross, Addie (Ryan) Mahoney, Jessica (Andrew) Anson, Heidi Delorey, Amber (Matt) Molle, Danielle Lewis, Nathan (Iva) Delorey, and Sean Delorey; "Great Grans": Olivia and Emily Gross, Jack Grafmeier, Iylee Mahoney, Madeline, Carson, and Evelyn Molle, and Joshua Delorey; further survived by a brother, Joe (Shirley) Birling; a sister, Janet Hall; several nieces and nephews.Harold was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Delores and Elaine.
    Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at the Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial Street, Neenah, with the Rev. Stephen Dietzler officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the Marshfield Clinic Cancer Center in Marshfield, in hope that someone else will get a second chance at life as Harold did.

He was a painter for the Vista School District for 13 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for more than 30 years, retiring in 1972. He served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Guadalcanal, Saipan and Tarawa.

    Mel Vanderlinden, age 83, of Appleton, passed away on Tuesday morning, May 19, 2015 at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah. He was born on July 30, 1931 in Appleton, to the late Clifford and Evelyn (Gerard) Vanderlinden. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, and then joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mel served his country from September 13, 1950 until September 12, 1953 and received The Purple Heart. On October 11, 1952 he married the love of his life, Mary Thompson in Daleville, Alabama. They shared 53 years together until her passing on May 19, 2006.
    Mel was a race car driver at the Outagamie Speedway, and other surrounding area race tracks. He was a member of the Rusty Spokes (Motorcycle Club) and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mel retired in 1996 from Palisades Heating and Cooling in Menasha. After retirement he drove bus for Lamers Bus Lines for 15 years. Over the years Mel enjoyed motorcycling, racing, gardening, but most of all spending time with his family.
    Mel is survived by his children: Debbie (Bob) Sokel, Micki (Will) Hoerning, Michael (Jerri) Vanderlinden, Shari (Bill) Block, T.C.     Betty Mae Schwanke, 73, Bradenton, Fla., passed away Tuesday April 2, 2008, at Tidewell Hospice & Palliative Care, Bradenton, after a short illness. Betty was born Sept. 20, 1934, in Appleton, daughter of the late Clifford and Evelyn Vander Linden. On April 7, 1956, she married Donald A. Schwanke at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Appleton. She loved to be with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. She enjoyed spending her summers with her family at Kelly Lake in Suring, Wis., fishing, swimming, jet skiing, but mostly cruising around Kelly Lake on the pontoon boat. She was fortunate to spend the last 11 years in retirement with her loving husband of 52 years in Bradenton, Fla., during the winters.
    Survivors include her husband, Donald A.     Jim was born in Appleton on December 30, 1926, to Clifford and Viola (Vander Linden) Tierney. He married Clementine Ann Burghardt on August 10, 1946, in Appleton. Jim worked at Consolidated Papers, Inc. for 43 years as a pipefitter. He started work at the Interlake Mill in Appleton in 1946. In 1982 he transferred to Wisconsin Rapids to work at the Biron Mill. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from February 1944 to April 1946 on the U.S.S. Rolf.
    For many years Jim sang barbershop music with the Fox Valley Aires in Appleton. He was an avid golfer. He enjoyed playing with his sons and many friends at Reid Municipal City Golf Course in Appleton and the Tri-City Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.
    Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Clementine (Ann Burghardt) Tierney at GNP Country Estates in Wisconsin Rapids; two daughters: Patricia Tierney-Hull, Appleton; Kathleen (Randal) Johnson. Nekoosa; two sons: Clifford Tierney, Appleton; Kelly Tierney, Nekoosa; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister (Violet Lyons) and a brother (Gerald Tierney).
    Friends may call at Taylor, Vollert and Jennings Funeral Home from 10 a.m. on Thursday until the time of services.
    The family would like to extend a special thanks and appreciation for the love and care Jim received from those at GNP Country Estates in Wisconsin Rapids, along with Golden Living Continental Manor in Abbotsford.

    Patricia May Jansen, age 81, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton.
    Pat was born on December 31, 1933 in Kimberly the daughter of the late Albert and Agnes (Vander Linden) Jansen. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Following her education, Pat worked for a toy manufacturing company in Hortonville for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Appleton. Pat loved playing scrabble and enjoyed reading until blindness took her sight and she then began listening to books on tape.
    Pat is survived by her brother, Jack Jansen; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Donald Jansen and two sisters, Shirley Hopfensperger and Donna Reiland.
    The funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Valley Funeral Home, Appleton with the Rev. Jim Leary, OFM Cap., officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Pat's family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on Monday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established for St. Joseph Catholic Church to be used for the bus service offered by Kobussen bus service to Masses.

    Leonard "Len" Elmer Birling, 74, Menasha, passed away Saturday evening, March 13, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Appleton. Len was born Oct. 15, 1935, to the late George and Eva (Dietz) Birling. He was a graduate of St. Mary High School, Menasha. Len was a member of the Wisconsin National Guard for eight years. He was employed by Marathon Corporation (American National Can Co.) for 42 years, most of that time in the Graphic Arts Division, working as a foreman.
    Len loved all sports, was an avid Brewers, Packers and Wisconsin Badgers fan. He coached a winning boys' Little League team for Youth Sports for 11 years and assisted his son, Greg, with girls' softball for three years. Len bowled in many leagues and an accomplishment he was most proud of was having the high average in the Marathon League for some years. He also enjoyed golf and had a passion for country music and his Gibson guitar.
    Len is survived by his high school sweetheart, Sandie (Girard) Birling. They were united in marriage on April 28, 1956, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Menasha. In addition to his wife of 53 wonderful years, Len is further survived by his three sons, Gregory (Mary Kay), Steven (Dawn) and Christopher (Connie) Birling. He was the proud grandpa of Angie (Dan) Hermanson, Andy (Nikki), Matthew, Amanda (fiance, Derek Murphy) and Brandon Birling. The new life in Len's family were the two great-grandchildren, Nevaeh and Benjamin Birling. He was looking forward to two new great-granddaughters this summer. Len is also survived by three brothers, Don (Myrtle), Jerry and Dan (Debbie) Birling; two sisters, Helen Werner and Barbara (Jay) Leimer; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Birling.
    Len was preceded in death by his parents, George and Eva; his in-laws, Jerry and Lois Girard; one brother, Robert; a brother-in-law, Bud Werner; and a sister-in law, Marge Birling.
    A Funeral Mass for Leonard will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 528 Second Street, Menasha. Fr. Paul Radetski will officiate. Friends and family may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Leonard will be laid to rest at St. Mary Cemetery, Menasha.
    A memorial fund has been established in Len's name.

    Thomas E. Birling, age 68, of Seymour passed away Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Seymour. He was born December 20, 1943 son of late Alex and Elsie (Hammes) Birling in Neenah.
    On October 28, 1967 he was united in marriage to Betty DeBruin at St. John Catholic Church in Seymour.
    Tom fulfilled a lifelong dream when he and Betty purchased the farm in Black Creek. Tom later worked at Seymour Canning, a job he truly enjoyed, until his retirement.
    Tom was a member of the FFA Alumni. He enjoyed singing in the St. John church choir, served on the St. John School Board for a number of years, and also served as a lector and an usher. One of his favorite things was decorating the church at Christmas time.
    He had an uncanny ability to walk in the door when the first sheet of cookies was coming out of the oven. Having a big bowl of ice cream was a nightly requirement for Tom.
    Tom was always outside doing things. He would be out feeding sheep, driving tractor, mowing the grass, building things, and simply loved to be outside. Tom especially enjoyed spending time with his good buddy, his grandson Zach. He was also a huge Packers fan.
    Survivors include his wife, Betty; sons: Tony (Pam) Birling and Andrew Birling; 2 daughters: Amy Birling and her son Zachary; and Amanda (Andy Herrell) Birling. Further survived by his brothers and sisters: Mary Brown, Cathy (Gary) Westerman, Betty (Rod) Harris, Mike (Jean) Birling, Ron (Jane) Birling. Also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Carol Birling; David (Mary) DeBruin, Steve DeBruin, Debbie (Keith) Rosin, Dennis (Patti) DeBruin; and father-in-law Orvell DeBruin.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Bill; brother-in-law Dick Brown; mother-in-law RoseMarye DeBruin; and sister-in-law Sharon DeBruin.
    Friends may call at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Saturday, December 15, 2012 from 9 am until the memorial mass at 11 am with Fr. Bob Kabat officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.

    Gilbert D. Mericle, age 71, of Menasha, passed away unexpectedly after a short battle with cancer on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at Rennes Health Center in Appleton. On November 26, 1942, Gilbert was born in Appleton to the late Donald and Anna (Birling) Mericle. Gilbert was united in marriage to Sharron Dahl on August 21, 1965 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Menasha.
    Gilbert loved being "Up North" at his cottage with his dog Trooper, sitting on the front porch, deer hunting, fishing, riding his 4-wheeler, or feeding his wilderness friends.
    Gilbert will be missed by Sharron and their children: Vicky (Charles) Plumbley, Carrie (Larry) Smit, Mike (Kerri) Mericle; his grandchildren: Nicole, Ashley, Payton, Josh, and Brooke; sisters: Donna Remter, Mary (Martin) Vande Burgt, Darlene Baier, mother-in-law, Lois Dahl; sisters-in-law: Rita Heinz, Diane (Dennis) Nackers, Carla (Tom) Williamson; a brother-in-law Darryl Quimby; and other relatives and friends.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, McKenzie, father-in-law, Lawrence Dahl; sisters: Edna (Pete) Derkes, Beverly Klinker; sister-in-law, Kathy Quimby; brothers-in-law: Gordon Remter, Earl Baier, and Mike Heinz.
    The Funeral will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Martens-Laemmrich Funeral Home, 312 Milwaukee Street in Menasha. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until the time of the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in the Town of Menasha. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
    The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at AMC, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Peabody Manor, and Rennes Health Center for the kindness and care given to Gilbert and his family.
