  DuWayne Louis "Wayne" VerKuilen, age 77, passed away on Friday, February 24, 2012 at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton. Wayne was born on September 13, 1934 in Kaukauna, son of the late Louis and Viola (Grimm) VerKuilen. He graduated from Kaukauna High School in 1953 then joined the United States Air Force, where he served in Laon, France until 1958. While there, he was recruited for the Air Force volleyball team, which went on to play for the world title. On October 18, 1958, he was married to Shirley Gresl. Wayne had many fond memories working for his father and brother in the family plumbing shop, and then as a City Inspector for the City of Kaukauna. Wayne lived in Kaukauna for most of his life until his retirement. After he retired, he and Shirley spent many happy winters at Hoopy's RV Park in San Jaun, TX, and summers at Shawano Lake. Wayne was a longtime Packer ticket holder, card club member, world traveler, and Friday Fish supporter with many family, friends, and close neighbors. He was a member of the Northeast Wisconsin Builders Assoc., the Wisconsin Plumbers Assoc., and the Kaukauna VFW Post 3319. Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley; five children, Vicki (William) Gooding, Appleton, Daniel (Bonnie Nastoff) VerKuilen, Black Creek, Steven (Michelle) VerKuilen, Pleasanton, CA, Richard (Patti Lauer) VerKuilen, Kaukauna, and Michael (Libby) VerKuilen, Peoria, IL; eight grandchildren, Angelica, Alex, Ben, Chris, Katie, Tracie, Max, and Trent; a brother, Ronald (Nancy) VerKuilen, Dallas, GA; a sister, Patricia Lamers, Combined Locks; brothers-in-law, Al (Carolyn) Gresl and Walter (Jackie) Gresl; sisters-in-law, Doris Gresl and Betty (Jim) Biese; and many nieces and nephews. He was further preceded in death by a granddaughter, Danielle. A memorial service for Wayne will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at HIGHLAND MEMORIAL PARK, STAR OF HOPE CHAPEL MAUSOLEUM, 3131 N. Richmond St., Appleton, with Rev. Judy Deckert officiating. Wayne's family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday at the Mausoleum from 12:00 p.m. until the hour of the service.
