Nicholas Mathelin, born at Neufchateau in the province of Luxemburg, Europe. Spent most of his life in the place of his nativity, following the occupation of Hatter. He was brought up [with] rigorously correct habits. Was a man of exceedingly pious nature; it is told of him that he always said his prayers in Latin. He was stoutly built and of a rare stubbornness of character. He married Marie Joseph Houdart and lived at Neufchateau; his father-in-law Captain Houdart lived with them. She died at Habay la Neuve in 1832. They had ten children of whom were:
Elizabeth, the eldest; died at Neufchateau
      Mathias, died in Paris
Charles; married Mlle. Thybesard of Luxemburg; died a la Neuve, 1824.
Marguerite, born in Neufchateau, Jan 31, 1793. Died in Appleton on Aug. 13, 1872. When the French entered and captured Luxemburg she was a baby. She received her early education in such schools as were in Neufchateau at that time which were not of the highest order. At the age of 16 she went to Paris and entered the "Ecole dela Maternite" from which she graduated and received a diploma as midwife. She married in 1814 or 15, Joseph Hubert Steffens. While young she is said to have been of a peitie and charming habit, and always of a mild and saint-like character.
All the other children of Nicholas and Marie Houdart Mathelin died young or in the army.
Notation--by Marie Steffens Benson--I remember my mother [Uranie Hollenfeltz Steffens] telling of this one who became her mother-in-law when she became Mrs. August Steffens, in Arlon, Belgium in 1865. This was after our Civil War in this country in which my brother [is this typo for "father", August?] served as Captain; he was severely wounded. After the war and his recovery he went to Europe and was enlisted as a volunteer. Mother was delivered of her two older children; Arlene and Herman by Marguerite Mathelin, who was my grandmother at Appleton. Mother spoke of her with the greatest love and affection. Saying she was the grandest character she had ever known. Mother also said she brought most of the babys to the early settlers of Appleton. We have her picture, also a picture of the first frame house in Appleton; it was taken at the time of the golden wedding of Grandpa and Grandma Steffens--Marie Steffens Benson, Mpls, Minn., Jan. 16, 1940
